Makenna came into the emergency room. The lieutenant asked Alex and Cappy if they were up to answering questions. They both looked at each other and nodded.
The pair were taken to the hospital cafeteria and Lieutenant Scott and Trooper Gates both asked questions about what happened and how they managed to survive. After both police officers seemed satisfied with the answers, Lieutenant Scott said, “There are several members of the press here who want to ask you some of the same questions we just asked, do you want to talk to them?”
Again they looked at each other and agreed they could do that. For the next 45 minutes they answered all the questions over again as politely as they could. Cappy wouldn’t quit telling everyone that Alex saved his life and that he would have died in the airplane if it weren’t for her. Then how she walked twelve miles to get help. Finally Lieutenant Scott came to their rescue and chased everyone out. “They need a break and some rest,” he said as he closed the door after the last reporter.
Alex slept late the next morning and took a long shower. All day she did laundry and got her stuff packed for the trip home. She barely slept that night, she was so excited for morning to come. Alex , Bailey and Brian were catching a plane home in the morning.
Her Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents, and some people that she didn’t even know met her at the airport. Then there was another round of questions with some local reporters. Her picture was on the front page of the newspaper. Papa Dave bought several copies.
The following Monday at school, all the kids were talking to her and asking her a zillion questions. Her first class was English. The teacher acknowledged that Alex was back. Alex was growing tired of the celebrity status. Mrs. White, the English teacher, mentioned that she had missed some assignments. “You may, however,” She said, “Make up your missing assignments by writing an essay of your adventure.”
Alex groaned and looked out the window. She was glad to be back in Oregon. There was a light rain falling.
