average size for an moderately populated town. Across from the high school was the large football stadium. It stood alone other than that. The school was on the edge of town and from there on out, it was fields, empty and full. They stretched for miles. The school, Jorenstad High School, was three stories high. It had a basement, but not much of it was used for classes. It was a good school. No crime, except for the occasional pot head. To Jason, it was great.
He walked in through the front doors and into the crowded halls. His locker was at the west end of the building on the first floor. He walked through the crowd, passing all the familiar faces of his classmates. He got to his locker and put in his key. All of the students were given a key which as used to open their locker. A student was given a locker for all four years and as a student graduated; their old locker was given to a new freshman.
As Jason fumbled through his locker and a guy about his age came up behind him and slammed his hand on the locker next to Jason’s. Jason lifted his head and turned to the guy. It was his good friend Matt Reynolds. His friend looked a little upset over something. Matt always expressed himself in a rather noticeable manner.
He was about the same height as Jason and had wild brown hair. He was a strong guy and played as a point guard for the school’s basketball team. He had hazel eyes and generally wore sports jerseys. Today he was wearing a Denver Broncos jersey.
“Something wrong?” Jason asked while picked up two of his books from the bottom of his locker.
“As usual, I forgot to study for the damn history test over the weekend,” he admitted, “Why do teachers feel the need to give tests on Mondays?”
“Well they are teachers,” answered Jason. His friend hung his head and sighed in agreement.
“So what did you do all weekend?” asked Matt, “Anything interesting?”
“I bought a house closer to the town.” Jason answered as he closed his locker.
“Whoa whoa whoa, a house?!?” Matt exclaimed, “Really?!? With what money?”
“I…uhh sold my old place in the city.” Jason lied.
“Damn, I wish I were free from my parents. They nag me all the time.”
“Ha-ha, well one day you will be.” Laughed Jason.
“Yeah, ok well I’ve got to go fail. See ya,” muttered Matt.
“Alright, catch ya later.”
Matt and Jason had known each other ever since Jason’s uncle thought he was old enough to attend human school and live among them. He was about ten years old when they met and they had become friends really quick. Jason found it easier and easier to hide his other life from him as the years went on. Jason thought Matt would be able to handle it, but it wasn’t necessary for him to know.
Jason left his locker and made his way to his first class, which was Spanish. Jason was in an advanced Spanish since he read all languages the same. He knew how to say and do anything in Spanish. He mainly focused on the Spanish history and culture. On his way there, he still couldn’t manage to shake the image of the girl in the city. Jason hadn’t ever felt this way about a girl. It was strange to him, but he had seen and heard about this feeling. Jason had never felt a big attraction to a girl. He liked girls, but things would only get complicated if he tried to manage a relationship. He hadn’t ever felt like this about a girl though. He tried to shake the image with the fact that he would likely never see her again.
He reached his class and seat near the window as usual. He didn’t know a lot of the people in this class, so for the most part he just stared out the window and listened to the lessons. He enjoyed learning about multiple human cultures. The more he knew, the easier his life here would be. The day progressed as most days did. He was a junior, by human standards, but took a lot of advanced classes. He enjoyed just about all of them, though was bored by them as well. Gym class was always fun because it amused him to see what the so-called athletes called exercise. The best human athletes wouldn’t survive two minutes of his training, but it didn’t change anything. He just did what it took to get an A in the class. He was good with numbers too. He had learned so much about the humans. Many humans didn’t know as much about each other as Jason knew.
His history classes were always fun. He really liked to know about how humans dealt with the problems of the past. He didn’t know much about his home world. As far as he was concerned, this was his home. He didn’t know his parents or any of the Aspen, like his uncle did. His uncle never talked about his father, while his mother was described as a goddess. Jason was told both were dead, but since he never knew them, that didn’t bother him too much. He did wonder from time to time if his father would be proud of what he had become and if he is growing up to be like his father. His uncle was surely impressed by his abilities and he was helping innocent people. What father wouldn’t be proud of that?
At lunch, Jason took his place at a table with his Matt and his other two best friends. Josh King was his big football star of a friend. Josh was tall and fast. He had a little less muscle than Matt, but had a fighting spirit. He also had brown hair but his was cut shorter. He had light blue eyes and big white teeth when he smiled.
Josh always had a huge interest in girls. Jason met him a year after he met Matt. Josh had a different girl every month it seemed, but he always seemed happy. He was a starting wide receiver and was on track to get scholarship. He may have been a huge athlete and all, but he had a pure heart and always seemed to make the right decisions. He said no to any kinds of drugs. He may not have kept onto his virginity like the law had wanted him to, but he was good other than that.
The other guy at their table was another good friend of Jason’s named Tony Servis. Tony wasn’t a sports guy, but definitely had athletic traits. He watched sports a lot though. He was always working out, but also really liked to read. Tony didn’t have long hair, or any hair for that matter. He had a completely shaven head. He liked it that way. He said it made his green eyes stick out.
Jason and Tony had met when they entered high school. They had a lot in common and enjoyed the same kind of music and movies. Tony and Jason were the only two of the four that liked horror movies. They, accompanied by a girl or two, would usually see them on opening night.
The table was never quiet. Someone was always saying something. When Jason reached the table with his food, he could hear Josh and Matt arguing over something. He guessed it was either about sports, girls, a TV show, or music. It was usually one of the four. As he got closer he found out it was about a girl. He sat down ready to listen to another argument that would end without a winner.
“Cathy was not at that party, man,” declared Matt, “She isn’t like that.”
“Of course she is!” yelled Josh, “Woman are all alike. She was there and from what I heard, with that Coty Haines guy.”
“Bull! No one would hang around that bag of crap,” stated Matt, “She is too nice of a girl to have gone anyways.”
“Yeah? Then where is she? She isn’t at school.”
“Maybe she was just sick,” Jason suggested.
“Jay, that girl is never sick. She gets that perfect attendance crap every year,” said Josh, “I’m telling you she is down at the police station.”
“Any one catch the score of the Cowboy’s game last night?” said Tony, changing the subject randomly. Jason had learned to tease with his friends a lot and knew what he could and couldn’t say to make fun of them.
“It’s the Cowboy’s, who care?” said Jason.
“They might win this year,” said Matt.
“Nah, the Jets have it all wrapped up again.” said Josh.
He loved how a simple subject change could end all the arguing and start a completely different discussion. His friends were good, loyal friends and always had one another’s back. No one really gave Jason a hard time, but Tony and Matt got some now and then. His friends were pretty well known around the school as well as he was. Jason was called popular by human standards. He didn’t really act popular. He was just liked to have a good time. He had done a lot of favors for people to help them out of the years. Many people liked him and could depend on him.
His day finished with a Trigonometry class. As he left his last classroom, someone ran into him in the hallway. It was a girl. She feel back and dropped her books. She groaned in irritation. Jason crouched down to the girl and picked up two of her books and handed them to her.
“I’m so sorry,” the girl said, “I wasn’t even paying attention to where I was going and…”
Jason stopped her by saying, “Oh, it’s no trouble at all.”
He looked down to her and she looked up at him. Jason couldn’t believe it. Just when he thought his day was pretty much over he sees her. It was the girl from the city. She was a student here. As she looked up into his eyes, he knew it couldn’t be anyone else. Her eyes held his mind captive again. They stared at one another for a bit. Jason could feel his heart pounding faster than normal. This was strange to him. She stared at him for few moments then stood up. He stood up as well.
“Thanks, I have been having one hell of a day,” the girl said.
“Yeah,” said Jason, “I know the feeling.”
“I don’t think I caught your name,” she said to him.
“Oh, uhh my name is Jason Shard.”
“Jason, huh? Well that’s a pretty cool name. My name is Sarah. Sarah Williams,” she said as she held out her small hand. Jason shook it. This was strange. He had just saved this girl this morning and now they were meeting all over again. He liked these circumstances better than this morning.
“Well, I’d like to stay and talk but I have to run. My car is busted and I have to catch a ride with my friend.” Sarah said.
“Yeah, uhh, no problem,”
“Well thanks again. I hope to see you around.”
“Yeah, me too,” agreed Jason.
With that she left down the hallway. Jason stood there thinking for a moment. Was that one of those moments he had heard about in all of the love stories? And a better question being was he in love? Could an Aspen fall in love with a human? He also wondered if he had hid his identity in time this morning. He really hoped so. He was wearing the same clothes as this morning. Jason hoped he would see her a lot more. However, little did he know, they would be seeing a lot of each other in the near future.
