As we walk on the beach, I can see and hear the chatter and fun sounds coming from the bonfire. There's loud music and laughter, and a big fiery bonfire that’s self-contained with party crowds surrounding it on the beach. People and couples are walking about, dancing, drinking, laughing and just partying on the beach. As we approach, I see a familiar lone figure trotting out to meet us. Oh. It’s Edward.
"Hey! Good to see you here, Ricky. Belle." he smiles with his weasely eyes. "Great timing. Grab some food and drinks. Over there, go help yourself. I'll catch up with you later," Edwards says as he walks off.
I silently roll my eyes as soon as he walks away. I know he's Ricky's manager or friend or whatever, but it’s clear he doesn't like me. And there’s something about him I don’t trust. I brush the thought away.
Ricky takes my hand and pulls me into the crowd. "Come on, let's get some drinks and food. Let's get this party started, shall we?" He winks at me. I smile sweetly back at him. I always have a great time any time I’m with him.
The party atmosphere is light and fun. Ricky and I savor our time together, laughing and enjoying each other over drinks. Occasionally, I look up and see other girls check him out but strangely, he doesn't ever seem to notice or care.
"Belle, want to take a seat by the fire with me?" I allow him to lead me towards the front to take a seat by the warm fire. With a couple drinks in hand we snuggle close to each other. I wish I could capture this moment with him forever.
I'm vaguely aware that the music stops. A guy in the circle was strumming the guitar but stands up. He walks over towards the front, smiles and waves at Ricky before he passes him the guitar as an offering.
Ricky smiles back at him. At first, he tries to politely decline. The guy nicely insists, offering the guitar to Ricky. "Oh Ricky, you should play," I say. "You're not shy, are you?" I tease with a wink.
He freezes and slips me a side stare in a mockingly dramatic fashion. He nods his head slowly at my mock challenge. "Oh…okay. I see. Well, if you're daring me to, then I guess I have to."
He grabs the guy’s guitar. Immediately, he loudly strums a catchy and hypnotic beat. He immediately captures everyone's attention with the first note. I'm surprised, shocked but giggling at his abrupt showmanship. After a dramatic intro riff, he slows it down to a sexy, sultry strumming.
The crowd around the bonfire starts hollering and clapping. I sit back to give him some space but he leans towards me and stares deeply into my eyes as he plays the guitar. He croons a soft melody with heartfelt lyrics to me.
I can't stop looking at him. His eyes lock on to me as he croons that he needs me, serenading me with the sweetest lyrics while everyone’s watching. I don't recognize the song. Maybe it’s a remake or his original writing. But his every word strikes a deep chord in my heart. He stares deep into my eyes as he sings to me. He makes it plainly clear to me that he’s singing and talking directly to me. My heart leaps into my throat. His sincere lyrics and beautiful chorus haunt me.
“I don't want you to go. I just can't get you out of my mind…”
As he strums his final chord and croons his last sweet lyric, the crowd breaks out into wild applause and screaming. He and I laugh as he returns the guitar to its owner.
"Come on, are you ready to get out of here?" he asks. I look around and see that every woman, beautiful or average, is staring at him and watching us. I guess I’d have to get used to that if we were together. He was quite a hot sight to behold. And the musical, sexy talent and smooth voice made him pretty damn irresistible.
"Okay, Ricky. I just need to run to the ladies room first," I slightly slur at him. I've only had a couple drinks but I guess it's starting up and I didn’t eat much earlier. And since I have such a tiny bladder, I'd rather not wait get back to the bungalow.
"There's one right next to the bar. I’ll walk you over," Ricky offers. "I'll wait for you out here."
I try to make it fast as I can. I'm ready to go home. After a few minutes, I exit the ladies room and almost run straight into Edward. "Oh! Sorry, didn't see you there." I mutter.
"Oh no, that's quite alright. I was just in the men's room." He was still standing in my way and continued talking. "So Belle, seems that Ricky has taken quite a liking to you just such a short time."
Over his left shoulder I could see Ricky in the distance waiting for me but talking to some beautiful blonde girl. What were they talking about? And what’s Edward trying to say?
"You know, Belle, Ricky is an extremely talented man. He's the man in demand. He's used to getting all the finer things in life." I raise an eyebrow at him. "Everyone wants him. He’s very busy. I just wouldn't want you to be disappointed."
"Oh? That's very generous of you to look after my needs and concerns. But you certainly don't have to, thank you." I coldly reply. Is he implying that I'm not good enough for his friend?
As I feel the anger rising inside me as I process his remarks, I look up to see the tall blonde getting closer to Ricky. To my horror, she leans over to try to kiss him on the lips. Ricky seems surprised and steps back. She grabs his wrist and pushes forward again to kiss him.
I go cold inside. I’ve seen enough. I shouldn’t be surprised, I guess, as I choke back the tears. I just know that I can't be here anymore.
"I… I’ve got to go. I don't feel well. If Ricky's looking for me, tell him… Oh whatever," I sputter as I run out. I look up for a brief moment to see Edward look puzzled at me. He looks behind him to see what's happening, then he smirks. I run out faster, my vision blurred by tears.
I don't know why I even put myself through this. I was just fine before him. God, I was such a fool! I scream at myself, unable to take solace in anything. I half speed walk and run back to my bungalow. I just need to leave this place as soon as possible.
As I enter my bungalow, I roughly brush the tears back. It was for the best, I tell myself. It's about time that I leave this place and him behind forever. As I grab my suitcase and start packing quickly, I have old visions of fighting with my ex-boyfriend in my head taunting me. I may not have a lot of experience, but I wonder if all guys are the same.
I just made the mistake of trusting my ex-boyfriend for all these years, when he'd been playing me for a fool and cheating on me repeatedly with a slew of random women. I don't know why I would think Ricky would be any different. Especially with his drop dead good looks, incredible talent and charm, and his track record of catching the eye of every woman within sight.
I need to pack faster. I storm around my room grabbing items and tossing them in my suitcase. He did me a favor, I tell myself. The faster I put all this behind me and move on, the better I can keep my sanity and move on with my life. I'm done.
My phone beeps loudly. I roll my eyes at the unwelcome text interruption. Of course, it's Ricky. He asks if everything is okay. He says he's concerned. I narrow my eyes at my phone and throw it on the bed. Pretty soon, it'll all be a distant memory anyway. I turn to my laptop and double check my travel plans. It takes just a moment to e-mail Julia about picking me up at the airport along with my itinerary.
Then there is a loud knock at my door. "Belle, it's me, Ricky. Open the door."
I roll my eyes as I look towards the door before I walk over angrily. I throw the door open and stare him down.
"Yes?" I can't help but see red. Why isn't he down the beach kissing that blonde bimbo? Why is he wasting my time? This isn’t me. But suddenly I’m consumed with anger.
"Belle, what's going on? I had to practically beat it out of Edward. He said you weren't feeling well?"
I shoot him an icy stare before I slowly turn around to continue packing. "No, I was suddenly feeling a little sick to my stomach. Listen, I'm in the middle of something now. I need to get ready to go back." He's silent.
After a brief pause, I blurt out, "Why don't you go back to that blonde girl? You two looked cozy." I try to hold back the tears as I feel my anger rising, ready to choke me.
"Oh my God, Belle. Is that what this is all about? I had no interest in her, I swear. I pushed her off and told her I wasn't interested at all. Then I look up and see you running off. You have to believe me, Belle. I just want to be with you. Why else would I be here right now?"
He gets close to me and takes my hand into his as he stares deeply into my eyes. I can't ignore him anymore. My face, my emotions begin to soften at his words and his sincere plea. His hands come up to my face to gently brush along my jaw line. "Belle, I mean it. I just want to spend every last moment with you. No one else."
I shiver a little under his gentle touch, his sweet words and silky soft voice. "Ricky, I…I'm sorry. I shouldn't have assumed. It just took me by surprise and I simply reacted. I'm glad you're here." I smile at him softly. Truth is, he’s here with me and not down by the bonfire with that blonde bimbo or any other girl for that matter. I surprised myself with the intense emotions that took over when I saw him with her.
"Ricky, my last long-term relationship…he cheated on me many times with many women. When I saw her trying to kiss you, I don't know…I guess I just freaked out." I feel embarrassed
