When she walked into a crypt, I ran out from behind a building I had hidden next to, and went to another gate. I looked into the cemetary, finding no one in sight. After that check, I quietly closed the gate. Only to find it needed some oil, and it creaked loudly. I heard a crash in the crypts. A considerably large rock fell from one. I quickly closed the gate. Then, I grabbed the padlock and chain, locking the gate. There was one more gate, so I ran for it, before Jess had made it to where I had been. I saw her walk from the crypt and to the now locked gate. She looked away, a curious expression on her bleeding, scarred face.
I sighed in relief, and went on to the last gate. It closed without a sound, once again to my relief. I locked it quietly, and quickly ran away.
Pulling my phone out of my pocket, I found it was going on 4:00, now. I turned again, to see what Jess was doing in the cemetary, and saw her watching me, attempting to climb the fence, but to no avail. I smiled sweetly, turned back around, and started to run towards my street. Well, that was eventful. I saw my house down the street.
Carefully, hoping my parents were not yet home, I opened the door and looked around. Not a sound, or any sign of life.
FalseI took a peek around the door. Nothing. But that was the living room! There was always someone in our living room! Usually David. Plus, David SHOULD definitely be home, by now. I went to his room, but did not find him there, either. What I did see was a picture of a girl who was definitely not me or my mother.
"Aw, David's got a girlfriend", I said quietly to myself. It had been a very long time since David had found someone to date. I looked at her. A pretty girl, and she definitely went to our school. I believe she is a sophomore, just like David is. If not, a freshman. Her name is Mandy Shell.
Mandy was always rather mean to me, but I'm sure we could get along if I tried to be her friend. I didn't have any homework today, so I just kind of moped around my house looking for something to do for about a half an hour. Then I remembered that I could play with Pitch! I ran up to my bedroom, quickly.
I snapped my fingers. And there Pitch was, her lovely soul, the ribbon-bound heart, was still white, but it glowed brightly. I kissed her and rubbed her back. I loved Pitch so much, and it's sad that she's now dead, but hey, at least I could still be with her, here and now. I heard the slamming door, so I told her bye and snapped back into the Overworld.
I sat quietly on my bed, waiting for someone to talk and let me know who was home. It was David. I could tell by the sound of something dropping to the floor in the room down the hall. Both because that was David's room, and because neither of my parents ever drop anything on the floor. Getting up, I walked over to the door, pulled it open, and stepped out into the hallway. A floorboard creaked downstairs.
"David? Was that you?" I asked, just wondering if he'd somehow gotten downstairs already.
"Huh?" he replied. But the reply came from his bedroom, not from downstairs. I took a deep breath. My parents would've said hello already, but no one has, and therefore I could tell it was not them.
I took a step towards the staircase, and David's door opened. He walked out.
"Did you want something, Ruby?" he asked, nonchalantly.
"Oh, no. I just heard something, downstairs", I replied. Dave rolled his eyes and sighed."There's nothing there", he said, a somewhat angry tone detectable in his voice.
"What did I do? Why are you angry at me?" I whispered.
"Nothing, nothing. Never mind it. Now why are you whispering?" he asked.
"Because there's someone in this house with us", I replied quietly.
"What are you talking about?" He yelled.
"Shh!" I insisted,"Did you hear that?"
We both looked down the stairs. A creaking sound. Almost like someone walking around in the living room. I listened carefully to the sounds.
"Judging by the sounds of the creaks, I can confirm that whoever it is has a limp in one of their legs", I whispered,"I can hear a small difference in the creaks when weight is put on the floorboards. But I have no idea who it could be, because I don't know anyone who has a limp."
I slowly walked back into my bedroom. There were a few places to hide if it came down to it. Looking around, I could name a few. A cupboard. The closet. Under the bed. And my personal favorite, behind the false wall. Yep. My house does have a false wall. It's old enough.
"David! Come here and help me move this shelf!" I whispered urgently. He walked in, a puzzled look on his face.
"Why are we moving it?"
"Because we need to! Now help!"
We stepped onto both sides of the shelf.
"I push, you pull", I said, pushing. He pulled on the shelf in a quick reaction. Okay, the shelf is moved. Check!
"Now, close the door."
Dave closed the door, and I shoved my desk chair under the doorknob.
"What are you doing that for?" he yelled.
"Shush! We're hiding!" I growled. I looked at the wall. I could see the opening of the false wall, but only because it was a very slight color difference from the rest of the room. You'd never see it at first glance without knowing what you were looking for. I put my fingers on it and pushed very slightly. It barely moved, so I shoved it a bit harder. With a little more force and a few more tries, it popped inwards. I smiled and stepped inside the wall, into a small room, about six by six feet, and beckoned David inside. He followed quickly and he went over and sat in the corner.
"We're not ready yet, of course. We don't have the necessary supplies."
I hopped back out and went over to my closet. I opened it and moved all the plastic tubs off of the shelf and grabbed a large wooden trunk. It was slightly heavy, but I was strong enough to carry it over to the room. I shoved it inside and went back to the closet.
"Don't open it, yet", I whispered. Then I grabbed a few articles of clothing and the blankets, sheets and pillows from my bed. They went into the room as well, before I grabbed my laptop, radio, radio remote, books, and some other means of entertainment. I also grabbed a board game, and, since I had it, my TV and extra Nintendo 64 and games. I shoved them into the room and jumped back in.
"Okay, all things needed and wanted, except your Xbox, are inside."
I pulled the shelf back over by a small handle I attatched to the side, and then shoved it the rest of the way by putting my fingers between a hole in the back. I then fitted the false wall back into place.
"Okay, please open the trunk, David. We're safe now", I said. I heard the trunk open slowly. I slowly outstretched my hand to the trunk and pulled out the first things on the top. A flashlight, some desk lamps, and electrical outlet strips.
"There are four sets of three outlets in this room so we can plug things in to keep us alive", I said, slowly. I switched on the flashlight and pointed them all out. One in each corner. Then, I plugged in the three outlet strips to one of the outlets in three of the corners.
"We don't need a fourth one, anyways. We have three lamps as well. Somewhat small, but pretty powerful", I said, plugging each lamp in and turning them on. It was very bright in the small room, now. I removed the shelf from the chest, which I used to make sure I found the light sources before them other supplies. There were eight smaller boxes inside. Each with a label. The second largest of the eight, labeled 'FOOD' was on top. I pulled it out and sat it next to one of the lamps.
"We'll deal with food and water, later", I said to David,"If we need to heat or cool something, don't worry, I'll be able to sneak back out and get my microwave and mini-fridge from my bedroom. But for now, we don't need it."
David looked at me. Baffled.
I smiled, and looked down into the trunk. I pulled out the next box, labeled 'HYGEINE'. I opened it, and inside was a small tub with a lid on it. It was for water for washing our hands. But it was empty right now, so I sat it down.
"We don't need to look at the rest of them, right now", I said to David,"So let's get a place to sleep ready."
