Max interrupted his memories, returning him to reality. Todd was building a fantasy world where he lived with his wife without problems, but Max had ruined it. Todd, now angered, brandished a laced dagger and charged at Max. Without the darkness covering him, they could see his attacks.
Guardian cast a spell that tore at Todd’s black cloak. Todd jumped back and sheathed the dagger, returning to the classics. He whipped his sniper out, given to him by his grandfather years ago, and fired randomly. None of the bullets made contact with them, but they hit the neighbor’s house. The barrier was shattered, exposing their actions.
“Cast another barrier. We don’t want to kill anybody.” Max shouted.
“Why? I need to spend everything on my spells.” Guardian exclaimed.
“Because it's human lives,” Skylar exclaimed, chiming in.
Guardian shook his head as he set off a fireball. The fireball made contact with Todd and threw him back. Guardian shook his head again as he watched Todd reluctantly stand up. It was clear as day that he lost all hope.
In Todd’s mind, he remembered the gangsters that killed his wife. The blind bullets that killed his wife without mercy.
The scream coming from a neighbor’s house stopped him suddenly. His wild shooting managed to hit somebody. It was then evident in his mind that he became something different. He was like them.
He stopped fighting and took every fireball. For Todd, he was now a true monster. The serum wasn’t the cause; He could only blame himself.
“Giving up?” Kenny’s voice penetrated Todd’s ears. It was coming from somewhere around him. He glanced around but couldn’t find where Kenny was. “You thought that I gave you powers and everything without having you on a leash.” His voice was crude and mocking.
“What do you want, Kenny?” Todd asked.
“Damage the boy and all debts will be cleared. Do whatever you have to, but cripple that boy. He’ll become a threat in the future, but I can’t afford to outright kill him. It’s easier to cover up gangsters’ deaths, but a young highschool would be harder.”
Todd swallowed a breath of air. “Everything would be cleared.
“Everything,” Kenny remarked, his tone hiding malicious intent.
Todd nodded his head and brandished the laced dagger. He charged forward, this time engulfing the backyard with darkness. Max created another ice wall, protecting Skylar. He slowly shifted her towards the house. She wasn’t prepared to fight people yet. For now, she would hide out in the house.
Unfortunately, somebody came out of the backyard. It was Gus, puzzled at the sudden cloud of darkness. “What’s going on here?” He asked.
Todd looked at Gus and went towards him. Max felt Todd heading towards Gus and cast another ice wall in front of Gus. He then sprinted to catch up with Todd, creating ice daggers and flinging them to where he thought he was. However, he was wrong. Todd has tricked him, creating clones of himself and dispersing. He had already reached Gus, hovering the dagger over his throat.
“One more step and I kill him,” Todd shouted. Max and the others stopped in their tracks. Max lowered his hands, waiting for Todd to gather his breath. Spreading the darkness and creating clones took a lot out of him.
“What do you want?” Max asked.
“I want… I want…” He stammered, pondering his intentions. “I want to keep my sister alive.” He brought the dagger closer to Gus’ throat.
“Who is doing this to you?” Max asked him.
“There’s an implant in his mind. He’s been taken over. Let me deal with this.” Guardian summoned a fireball and launched it at Todd. he ducked the attack and slit Gus’s throat. Gus collapsed to the ground, spurting out blood. Max rushed to his friend’s side and went to cover the wound but Guardian grabbed his arm. “There’s poison on his wound, you’ll be killed if you touch it!” He grabbed Max and dragged him away. Max and Skylar watched as the body of Gus twitched and broke, throwing him in an unnatural position. His death came soon after.
Todd tried to run away, but Max erected an ice wall to block his escape. Fuelled by anger, Max created an ice bow and laid an ice arrow on the string, drawing it back. Todd panicked and went around the ice wall, running in a straight line. The man descended into a kid as he fled, but Max wasn’t going to be lenient with him. He let the arrow go, watching as it pierced through his ice wall, and went for Todd’s head. Before it could reach his head, a black android appeared out of nowhere, its shiny armor reflecting off the sunlight. It grabbed the arrow with its hand, crushing it. It threw the remains on the ground.
“Who are you?” Max shouted.
“I am called Rock Mask, servant of Ghost. Marksmen is important for my master’s plan, so I will be taking him.” The android threw a crystal at them. “We will be exchanging this for his safety. Goodbye,” The android grabbed Marksmen and disappeared. It was gone within a second without using any darkness; teleporting away.
The others were left dumbfounded. They were now left with a messed-up backyard, mysterious crystal, and a dead body. They were given the short stick of the fight as Max witnessed his best friend’s killer vanish without any consequences. He wasn’t able to avenge his death.
“I’m killing Ghost and Marksmen. Let them rot in hell.” He spat. Skylar glanced at him, trying her best to stare away from Gus’s dead body. Guardian was busy investigating the crystal, trying to figure out the origins of it. He then turned to face Max.
“You better get started. This here is the Darkness Crystal. We’ll need it in the future.”

“You’re telling me that 5-9-0 has escaped. How did you let this happen?” A man in a lab coat asked a smaller man in a lab coat. “How could she escape? Get the Canine on this task, immediately!”
“Yes, Doctor Caulton. She will be found by the day’s end.” The smaller scientist told him before running off.
“If she isn’t found by the end of the day, then I will personally track her-” He balled his fingers into a fist. “I’ll kill her!”
A frail tanned petite woman traveled with a similar-in-height white girl with dirty brown hair, towards a patch of abandoned warehouses. They were fitted with hospital gowns. They were dirty and scarred.
“This is our new home,” The white girl said.
“Will he find us?” The tanned girl asked.
“No, Kate… he won’t.”
