This actually caused Carol to become worried. Even though Mr. McHimpher was a natural hothead, he never put her on the spot in such a way. Through all of the times he and Carol locked horns, she had always gotten out with only a scratch, but from the looks of it, she’d be leaving with a rather large stab wound in her back.
“Now I’d very much appreciate it if you’d get your act together and get on track. But if you don’t, I’m sure I won’t have that hard of a time finding someone who will. Mr. … You remember Mr. Mulligan don’t you?” He left no room for her to speak and continued. “Well anyways, Mr. Mulligan our newest addition to this business has apparently shown just how worthy he is of earning an early promotion and I’m considering the thought.”
The expression on Mr. McHimpher’s face frightened Carol. The way he stared at her as though she’s a piece of meat that can easily be tossed to a pack of rabid dogs to tear at and shred apart. Mr. McHimpher and her fellow co-workers, all but her few friends in this building, were the ones that were going to gnaw at her until she was torn into so many pieces that not even those with the sharpest eyes could put them in the right places.
“I promise you sir that I will pick up the pace. There is no excuse for so little progress on my behalf. I apologize sir and if there’s any way to prove to you that I am Life Magazine material, I will participate willingly,” she replied still shaking inside though she pictured him seeing her being as calm as can be.
“Well then do it! I run a business not a daycare. If you don’t know how to act like a responsible adult with a love for her job then you don’t need to be here. I have a long list of people that I’m trying to get them to subscribe us, but with you acting like a fool, a dumb fool who doesn’t know how to keep our clients happy, then they won’t sign. Now if you’d just put on a smile, pretend that you love life, and go about your business in this business and actually type something up and send it up here, then maybe, just maybe you can keep your job…” Mr. McHimpher’s face was now blazing red and Carol was almost sure she saw steam shooting from his small ears.
Gulping hard she nodded in understanding.
“Of course Mr. McHimpher, I will do my job to the best of my ability and to your standards.” She started squirming in her seat and stayed silent.
After what seemed like eternity, he finally sighed heavily and took in a deep breath, exhaling slowly.
“Just do what you’re supposed to and keep in mind that your position is up for grabs if you don’t… That is all,” he said while struggling to pull his tightened eyebrows apart.
Carol stood as he motioned his hand towards the door. She nodded her head in his direction indicating that she appreciated the conversation though she was thinking quite the opposite. Turning the knob and walking out of the heavy atmosphere room, she breathed in the less dense air though the weight of the conversation followed her and weighed her down, and headed towards her desk on the floor below.
Now frustrated and worried, Windelburg sits in front of her computer, left hand clenched while the other tries to massage away a forming migraine as she realizes the work she saved, or so she thought, was deleted and she now has to start from scratch using the notes she had jotted down during interviews.
If this doesn’t kill me soon, I don’t know what will. I’ve tried so hard keeping it all together, but it seems like the further ahead I get, the further behind I really am…
