“Um… well…” I struggle to think of any thing I can use to stall us going to the beach. “Yes.” I say giving in.
“Good.”
As soon as the beach comes into view Keith’s phone goes off. Yea! Saved by the bell.
“Hey, Neil what’s up?” He listens nodding like Neil can see him. “Okay, see you in a few.”
“What was that about?”
“Nothing, we’re just going to meet Neal at the board walk.”
“Why?” I ask confused.
“He has something for you.” He says pulling me in the direction of the beach
When we get to the boardwalk Keith pauses looking for Neil then continues pulling me. We come to a stop in front of a tall boy, with very curly, very blond hair. Maya stands next to him and she looks drunk. The wind shifts and the strong smell of alcohol blows into my face.
“Here.” Neil says shoving her into me.
“Thanks.” I say sarcastically. She moans in response and I push her off me watching as she crumples to the ground. I pull out my phone and call my dad.
“Hello?”
“Hi, dad I need you to come get me and Maya.” I say.
“Okay, where are you?”
“We’re on the boardwalk.”
“I’ll be there in a few.” He says then hangs up.
New Problems
Chapter 5
New Problems
When my dad arrives he and Keith help an inebriated Maya into the back of our car. I’ve never seen her like this before, I mean I know she drinks but… After she’s buckled into her seat I climb into the car even though I don’t want to.
“I’ll um… I’ll just call you later. Okay?” I say to Keith
“Sure babe.” He says closing the car door.
After a few minutes of silence Maya’s stench of vomit and alcohol gets to be too much and I role down the window, taking two big gulps of fresh air before I speak.
“Dad, I want Maya to go home.” I can see the surprise on his face in the review mirror.
“She’s only been here for a day and a half.”
“I know.”
“Then why do you want her to go?” He asks glancing at me in the mirror.
“I’m just sick of her attitude, it’s like I’m her mom or something.”
“Well I’ll arrange it but I’m not going to tell her.” He says brushing his white hair out of his face.
“Okay thanks.”
My father and I tuck Maya into one of the guest rooms on the second floor for two reasons; one I don’t want her in my bed and she can’t sleep on the couch, but mostly it was the fact that she’s heavy and we weren’t going to carry her up another flight of stairs. As soon as my dad leaves the room I pull out my phone and call Keith.
“Hey, Bailey.”
