who were trying hard to behave like normal human beings! The Tyrannosaurus Rexstrew didn’t have a clue who any of these children were, Lucy felt sure of that.

Lucy clapped along with the rest of the school and then watched as Miss. Baker went to the front to make an important announcement. This was different…Mrs. Rexstrew was usually the only teacher that spoke at these assemblies.

“Whilst most of the Year 5’s were at the Adventure Centre last week, the ‘home team’ made scarecrows. I am very pleased to say that the best one of these scarecrows will be entering a Borough Scarecrow Competition. I have already sent in a photo of the school’s winning entry and it will be judged amongst other schools in the Borough later today. I am sure you have all seen the fantastic scarecrows lined up in our school garden. And our school’s winning entry was made by…Lucy Peters!”

Lucy felt herself going red. She sat very still, hoping that no one would notice her. She watched as Mrs. Rexstrew mouthed ‘Who?’ to Miss. Baker. Miss. Baker was stretching out her hand to pull Lucy up to the front. It would have been rude for Lucy not to take it. Lucy found herself standing in front of the entire school whilst everybody clapped enthusiastically. Well the teachers seemed to be clapping enthusiastically, not so much the children.

The Tyrannosaurus Rexstrew shook her hand quickly and then talked about a fabulous scarecrow she had made when she was a child.

As Lucy made her way back to her place; Sophie deliberately stuck her foot out. Lucy tripped. Everybody laughed.

As the children led back to class, Miss. Baker patted her on the back and said “Well Done Lucy!” No one else spoke to her for the rest of the day…
After school, Lucy was sitting in her bedroom. She had her Mum’s old sewing kit on her bed and she was mending her Dad’s trousers with some of the same purple material she had used to mend the scarecrow’s trousers. She loved her cosy little bedroom, and she loved the little Caretaker’s house she lived in with her Dad. It was just to the side of the school and it was perfect…well, almost. Lucy couldn’t help thinking back to the morning’s assembly and every time she did, she was filled with embarrassment and real pride. She loved that scarecrow and she was so pleased that Miss. Baker felt the same. Imagine if her scarecrow was judged the best in the whole Borough! Lucy told herself not to be so silly. That was all the schools in her town and the town next to theirs. That was a lot of schools, which meant a lot of scarecrows! Lucy’s scarecrow was great, but better than everyone else? Lucy shook her head. Things like that didn’t happen to Lucy.

Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the front door opening and closing with a bang and her Dad pounding up the stairs two at a time. Her dad knocked quickly on her bedroom door and then flung it open! His face was red with excitement.

“I’ve just heard the news…You won, Lucy! You won!” He shouted, “Your scarecrow won!”
