āNo shit. I know what an UNSUB is.ā Burden grabbed hold of the paisley patterned velour couch and pulled it away from the long living room wall. āTo answer your question, Iād say absolutely he did. No one heard anything. No signs of a struggle, no evidence of a forceful breakin.ā
āSo whatever method he used to gain entry, it was smartāand effective.ā
āJudging by the results, it appears so.ā
Burden followed an electrical cord along the length of the wall to a clock on the side table. āWhat are you thinking?ā
āIām trying to build the offender profile.ā
āAnd?ā
āAnd Iāll let you know what I think as soon as I have something intelligent to say.ā
āSo that could be...never?ā
Vail swung to face Burden. āOoh. Good one. I think Iām gonna like you.ā Then she walked into the kitchen where multiple appliances stared back at her. āAny marks on the wrist?ā
Burden followed her in and shifted the blender aside. āRestraints were used, if thatās what youāre getting at. Figured it was part of the torture ritual.ā
Just torture? More like sexual torture. But Vail absorbed that fact, and assumption, without comment. After a momentās thought, she said, āFirst thoughts here...but it looks like weāre looking for a sexual sadist.ā
āSo,ā Burden said, āthat would be the first intelligent thing youāve said?ā
Boy, this guyās good. Heās definitely got game. āYeah,ā Vail said. āThatād be it.ā
āAnd youāre saying heās a sexual sadist because of the torture?ā
āBecause of the sexual torture. The scumbagās inflicting physical or emotional paināto elicit a response from the victim. Itās a response he finds sexually gratifying. Now you can have torture without sexual gratification, but a sexual sadist, by definition, has to have a living victim. Make sense?ā
Burdenās face was contorted. āSo he did this to her while she was alive?ā He shivered, as if he had bitten into a lemon rind. āHonestly, none of this shit āmakes senseā to me.ā
I know how you feel. āThe husband,ā Vail said. āYou said heās an attorney. I assume heās got no criminal record.ā
āIām sure thereās some crude joke here about lawyers, but no, Mr. Andersonās got a clean sheet. Like I said, weāve got an APB out on him.ā
āIām trying to eliminate him as a suspect.ā
Burden pushed the toaster back in place, then gave a final look around the townhouse. āLooks like all plugs and appliances are intact. Which means he probably brought the electrical cord with him.ā
āSo,ā Vail said, āheās either killed before or he intends to kill again. He might also be keeping the tool as a reminder, kind of like a trophy. A way for him to relive the murder.ā
āI thought a trophy was something of the victimās, like a lock of hair or a photo.ā
āIt can be anything,ā Vail said. āSomething that has psychological significance to the offender that allows him to relive the kill. Iām not saying this electrical cord is a trophy, but it could function for him like one. Or it could be that itās a tool in his murder kit.ā
Burden sat down heavy in a soft overstuffed living room chair while Vail walked over to the bay windows. The fog was lifting a bit. She could now see more of the Golden Gateās tower.
āYou think this UNSUB will kill again?ā
Vail watched the fog roll by. It moved swiftly, tumbling and swirling, like time-lapse photography.
āUnless thereās something else you want to see here, we should get over to the morgue.ā
She pulled herself away from the window. āDrive me around the neighborhood a bit so I can get a feel for the area.ā
āOne thingāll be obvious,ā Burden said as he pushed out of the deep chair. āThis isnāt the kind of place youād expect something like this to happen.ā
Vail chuckled. āThing is, Burden, this shit can happen anywhere. Anytime. To anyone.ā Vail glanced back at the bedroom. āEven, unfortunately, to old ladies.ā
