him, thanks to your club, I was beaten daily and raped repeatedly. Then finally, we moved to Louisiana because the police were about to arrest my dad, and when we got to New Orleans, my dad sold me to a horrible man who took turns raping and beating me into submission?

Yeah, I don’t think Once Upon a Time will work in my case.

Instead, I told them about my mother and how much she loved and doted on me, which was kind of the truth, but mainly she stayed away because dad kept her drugged heavily. I did miss her, and I missed my dog Buster, who my father shot after we moved to Louisiana, but I said he just ran away.

Oh, I did mention my desire to finish school, which was the honest to God’s truth.

“Remi,” Max whispered, his eyes boring into mine. “You’re lying. Why?”

“I’m not lying.”

“Yes, you are. I can tell. You’re fiddling with your fingers and won’t look me in the eye. You did that when we were in the cages when you didn’t want to talk.”

“I don’t want to talk about that, ever,” I shouted, tears forming in my eyes. I wouldn’t do it. Not even Max could make me.

Max hugged me, rubbing my back. “Okay, Remi. You don’t have to talk about it. I won’t make you.”

Hugging him back, I held on to him for dear life.

That’s what Max was.

My lifeline.

The one person who I believed could save me. Make me smile when all I wanted was death to consume me. I’d been fighting my whole life, and I was tired. I didn’t want to fight anymore. I just wanted to sleep and pray it was peaceful.

When I looked up, Max was smiling at me, and Uncle Peter had left. “I’m sorry, I’m so emotional. I don’t know why.”

“Don’t play this off, Remi. I know, and so do you. Hell, even Healer knows, and before you say anything, he won’t say a word.”

“I don’t know how to talk about it.”

“Neither do I.”

“Maybe, we can talk. You know, just us. No one else.”

“Maybe,” Max said, looking away.

“I’m tired, Max. I think I’m gonna go back to sleep.”

“Okay Remi,” Max said, helping me to lay back down. “You sleep, and I’ll stand watch. Nothing is going to bother you tonight.”

“What about you?”

“I’ll sleep when I’m tired. Just rest and let me watch over you.”

“Okay, Max,” I yawned, closed my eyes, and drifted off to sleep.

All I wanted to do was sleep. I was tired of crying, tired of saying thank you to everyone who stopped before me.

Mostly, I was plain tired of everything.

My mother finally did it. She killed herself. For my whole life, she had been drowning herself in one drug or another. At first, I thought it was because of something I did, but now I knew differently. She wasn’t taking drugs on purpose. She was being fed them daily, so my father could do whatever he wanted with her and with me.

I caught him two nights ago inserting a needle into my mothers’ arms. When I asked, he just said that the doctor prescribed her something for her diabetes. The funny thing, though, my mother didn’t have diabetes.

Nope, my bastard father had been drugging her, getting her so addicted that she craved him or the drug, but I was betting on the drug. So, when a Police officer showed up a day later, well, I wasn’t shocked to hear that my mother ran headfirst into a tree with her car. I was just thankful no one else was hurt.

Oh, my dad played the pitiful widower. He excelled at acting. I should know. I’d seen it my whole life. The man couldn’t act normal even if he tried. After everyone left, I kicked off my shoes and headed to my room, not giving a shit about the mess.

My body felt heavy, as if something were weighing me down. It was strange and a bit uncomfortable. I closed my eyes for a moment, only to open them again when I felt someone staring at me.

It was him.

The bad man.

He found me.

Oh, God. I can’t. Not again.

He stood above me for a minute, staring at me, admiring me, devouring me with his eyes.

I knew that look.

It was bad.

Really bad.

He took possession of me with his stare, claiming me as his. One arm fell off my chest and lay on the bed beside me. The other was lying on my stomach. I tried as hard as I could to move, but I couldn’t. I was completely immobile.

“Don’t worry, my darling. The drug I had your father slip into your tea earlier won’t hurt you. I just can’t have you screaming or fighting me. I’ve tried really hard to wait, but you looked so sultry today, teasing and flirting with all the men here. I admit I was jealous. So, now it’s my turn, and we won’t be interrupted by anyone, ever again.”

He knelt on the bed beside me and leaned his head over my face. I felt his breath on my lips. It smelled sweet, more like fruit juice than liquor. He touched my lips to his. He kissed me lightly, waiting to see if I would move and when I didn’t, he grinned evilly.

“You’re mine forever, Remi.”

He forced my mouth open with his lips, kissing me harshly as his left hand moved up to my shirt, and pulled it up out of my skirt. He laid his hand on the bare skin of my tight stomach. He stopped kissing me and watched me as his left hand moved to my hips, feeling my smooth skin. He traced his fingers along my hips, brushing my panties.

He ripped my blouse open, exposing my breast. He unsnapped my bra and removed it. I was bare to him as his eyes went wild as he grabbed my skirt and pushed it up to my waist. Ripping my panties from my body, he quickly positioned my legs apart, baring all of me
