around it better than I do.”

“Try Hydra.” Syx’s eyes went back to scanning her holographic storybook. “She has maps.”

I chuckled, “I am 100% confident Hydra won’t share them with me.”

“Not my problem,” Syx shrugged, still reading.

“Look, I’ll clear it with Colonel Sadys. Better yet, I’ll make an announcement over comms to everyone here. That way, everyone will know I’m giving you official Royal permission to leave the outpost with me. Crown to Control.”

“Control to Crown. Ursa here. How can I help, my king?”

“Are you ever not in Control?” I chuckled.

“Ha,” Ursa laughed audibly. “No, I’m just covering someone’s shift tonight. What do you need, my king?”

“I need to make an outpost-wide announcement. Can you put me on the PA or connect me to everyone’s comm ring or whatever, so I can tell them?”

“No!” Syx gasped and rolled off her bunk, passing briefly through her holographic novel when she jumped to her feet. “Don’t do that!” she hissed. “Then everyone’ll know!”

I smiled, “Should I tell everyone here you don’t want to be my guide tonight?” I glanced at the crowded barracks where many women had gone back to whatever they were doing while pretending not to sneak glances at whatever I was doing.

Syx’s face soured into a scowl. “Are you a professional manipulator, or only part time?”

Grinning, I said, “I don’t know how else to convince you I genuinely need your help guiding me around the jungle.”

“Ask Sergeant Kane to show you. She knows it as good as I do.”

“I’d rather it be you.”

“Why?”

“Let’s just say… I need someone I can depend on.”

“You can depend on Sergeant Kane. She’ll have your back. She always has mine.”

I tipped my head over my shoulder at my Shock Knights. “They already have my back. I need you to be my guide forward.”

Syx pursed her lips. Thought about it. “Promise not to make a big deal?”

“I promise. Shall we?” I nodded toward the exit hatch and offered her my elbow.

She looked at my elbow like it was on fire. “What’s that for?”

“Oh, right. You don’t want me making a big deal.”

Walking an arm’s length apart, we made our way toward the exit hatch, passing dozens of guardswomen along the way. They all stared. Halfway to the hatch, the whispers and giggles started.

“She must be his first.”

“Why’d he pick her?”

“Why’d he pick a Xeno?” a Monster babe said, completely surprised and thrilled by the idea.

“Why didn’t he pick me?” another Monster babe whimpered in disappointment.

A beautiful Normal soldier walking by muttered, “A Xeno like her belongs in the cage with those white Xeno demons from the other day.”

I made eye contact with the Normal soldier and said loud enough for everyone nearby to hear, “Maybe I should put you in with them, soldier.”

The Normal soldier averted her gaze and walked quickly away.

“Conk,” Syx muttered under her breath.

A random Monster babe hollered, “Is Corporal Syx going to be your first, my king?!”

Corporal Syx cringed, rolled her golden eyes, and shook her mane of black hair in irritation.

The barracks broke into girlish laughter.

“No,” I chuckled. “She’s not going to be my first.”

“Who is?!” someone gasped.

“Tell us!”

“We’re dying to know!”

“I haven’t picked her yet,” I hollered the lie. “When I choose my first, you’ll be the first to know.” If I lived that long.

“Pick me!”

“No, pick me!”

“Sorry, ladies,” I laughed. “Not tonight.”

If someone assassinated me tonight, I’d die sexually frustrated, sure, but at least I’d die with the peace of mind of knowing I’d won the award for Best Boyfriend In The History Of The Universe, at least as far as saving myself for Oia was concerned.

That had to be worth something.

Only ten more days until Oia was fully healed.

Ten more days that felt like decades.

Where was that damn award?

Oh, there it is. Bill Shakespeare is holding it up in one hand, wearing a smarmy smirk, twirling his Van Dyke beard with his pinky and daring me to go up on stage at the Old Globe and claim it.

They say a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

Knowing I wouldn’t be anywhere near any bushes for the next ten days, I decided to flip both my birds at Bill Shakespeare.

—: Chapter 96 :—

“What are we doing here?” Syx said uneasily.

“Detour,” I said.

We walked through a hexagonal hatch guarded by two armored guardswomen. It was the entrance to the Stockade building in the far corner of the outpost. Following me and Corporal Syx were Captain Theia and my Shock Knights.

“I want to show you something,” I said to Syx.

Looking indignant and slightly horrified, she stopped in the middle of the corridor and snarled, “You said you wanted my help! You’re going to lock me up, aren’t you?!” She was suddenly raging but holding it in like a volcano ready to blow a column of hellfire a mile high.

“No,” I said. “I need your advice before we hit the jungle. Follow me.” I turned and started walking.

“Do I have any choice?” Syx said defiantly, standing her ground where I’d left her.

I stopped. “Yes.”

“I choose to go back to barracks,” she said firmly.

“Please,” I sighed. “I really need your advice. I promise you don’t need to worry. Nobody is locking you in the stockade.”

Syx’s eyes danced between me and my Shock Knights.

Captain Theia said, “You can trust him with your life, Corporal Syx. I do and you can too.”

“You’re an officer and a… Conk,” Syx said gently. “I’m just a Xeno grunt.”

“Our king is a good man,” Theia said compassionately, ignoring Syx’s slight. “Labels mean nothing to him. Everyone is an equal in his eyes. I know. I’ve seen it. You can trust him.”

I smiled, “Thank you, Captain Theia. That was very kind of you to say.”

“It’s true, my king.” Theia turned to Syx, “Corporal, you can trust him.”

“Fine,” Syx smirked.

“Thank you, Captain,” I said, nodding at Theia before leading everyone through several more stout hexagonal hatches until we were in the viewing room looking into the holding cell with the white demon guardswomen. When their ghostly white
