Ring, I thought frantically, give me night vision! Enhance any available light and convert infrared wavelengths to visible light!
Nothing.
With my ring HUD still dark, it wasn’t a surprise the surrounding jungle was too.
No HUD meant my rings weren’t working.
It also meant I was nearly powerless.
I didn’t even have the ABR-17 I had brought with me. It had gone flying when I had first hit the jungle canopy.
The sound of a snapping twig shot me through the heart. In the darkness, my imagination informed me that the giant boa constrictor had been scared off by an entire pack of Terrorsaurs who were now circling hungrily around me and closing quickly. With them was Titano, an army of Slasher Bats, and Goldie the Gargantua riding a freaking flying dragon, all of them drooling and licking their snouts in anticipation of ripping me to pieces.
“My king?” Theia whispered. “Please sound off so I can find you!”
“Right here!” I whispered desperately.
Soft sounds of feet padding across undergrowth.
“Where are you?” Theia hissed.
“Over here!” I vainly waved my arms over my head.
“There you are,” she whispered. “I see you now.”
How could she possibly see me? It was like looking into a bucket of black paint or being immersed in an oil spill.
A moment later, I felt the warmth of her body next to mine but didn’t see anything. Not even a black silhouette.
I said, “Can you see me in this darkness?”
“Yes,” Theia said.
“How? Is your ring working?”
“My ring?”
“Doesn’t yours give you night vision?”
“No. My eyes are genetically enhanced to see infrared and ultraviolet wavelengths.”
“No shit,” I chuckled.
“I promise they are.”
“It was a euphemism, Ms. Spock.” I was trying to keep a sense of humor about getting shot down and losing the powers of my rings.
“Mr. Who, my king?”
“It’s Doctor Who,” I chuckled.
“Begging your pardon, my king, I’m not following…”
“Sorry. Just talking nonsense. I’ll explain after we get our asses safely back to the outpost.”
“That sounds wise, my king.” Theia sighed, “If we had comms, I’d contact Control to have them send a rescue craft.”
“Wouldn’t that be nice. I take it your ring isn’t working either?”
“No.” Theia shook her head.
“And your power armor?”
“Gone.”
I was keenly aware her hot body was inches from mine. I’d seen her naked so many times, it was easy to imagine it in perfect detail. Despite the danger of this situation, my rod responded instantly to her presence. I was very grateful for the darkness.
Glancing around and trying to think about something other than sex with Theia, I noticed her eyes gave off the faintest green glow. I said, “Do your eyes glow green because they’re enhanced?”
“They glow?”
“Every time I look at them,” I chuckled.
“They must be catching the moonlight. It’s very bright tonight.”
“If I haven’t mentioned it, they’re beautiful.”
“Thank you, my king.”
So much for managing the growing problem with my rod.
Two evil yellow eyes suddenly appeared in the shadows, crouching low and catching our attention.
My imagination said it was a mutant lion with titanium spikes for fangs and steel knives for claws.
Bye, bye, Rod. He went into hiding.
“Stand back, my king,” Theia warned, her feet rustling on the darkened ground cover as she stepped in front of me to fight.
—: Chapter 101 :—
In the darkness, Captain Theia said icily, “I’ll handle this beast.”
“Oh, uh…” I didn’t know what to say. Without my rings, I was a gamer who knew far more about fighting in Mortal Kombat and CAPCOM’s Street Fighter than I ever would in real life. No, that wasn’t quite true. After nearly two months of kicking ass for real, I was starting to think I knew a thing or two about actual fighting. Consequently, I didn’t stand back. I stood my ground.
“I’m not a beast,” Corporal Syx said with annoyance, her golden glowing eyes rising to her full height as she rustled quietly out from the shadowy brush.
I said, “Can you see in the dark too?”
“Yeah,” Syx said. “Can’t you?”
“No. It’s pitch black.”
“How about now?” Syx’s eyes brightened further, creating a soft yellow glow that offered just enough light I could faintly see the shadowy shapes of leaves and trees surrounding us, and the naked forms of her and Theia.
“That’s better, thanks,” I said, taking note of how incredibly tight Syx’s naked body was. This was the first time I’d seen her out of power armor, her uniform, or the black sports bra and short-shorts I’d seen in that security video. Syx was gorgeous naked. Theia’s body was just as incredible, but her proportions were slightly different. No matter. Both women were perfection. I could ogle them all night. It would certainly keep my mind off the danger we were in. I could also imagine what the three of us could do naked, writhing and moaning, entwined together wetly in this dark jungle grotto, if it wasn’t so damn dangerous. Stupid jungle monsters.
Theia said, “Corporal Syx, this much light will attract attention to us. Please darken your eyes.”
“Sorry,” Syx snorted. “I was just trying to help, Captain.”
“So am I,” Theia said firmly.
I tensed expecting a cat fight, but instead Syx’s eyes dimmed until they were just bright enough to illuminate her cheeks, fine nose, and delicately sculpted brow. Otherwise, I couldn’t see anything except shadows. Even the glow from Theia’s green eyes was gone. She had been right to say it was the moonlight catching them a moment ago.
I said, “Any idea what the hell happened? Did we get hit by an EMP or something? Is that why our rings aren’t working?”
“Yours failed too, my king?” prompted Theia.
“Yeah. Both my rings are down. What about your ABR-17? Do you still have yours or did you drop it?”
“I have mine.”
“Me too,” Syx said.
I said, “Is it working?”
Theia said, “Not at the moment, no.”
Syx said, “Mine isn’t either.”
I grumbled, “It was an EMP that hit us, wasn’t it?”
“EMP?”
