in my partner.”

Kain withdrew his hand, his eyes searching Tala’s as he waited for a reply. It came in a form Kain didn’t expect. Tala closed the distance between the two of them, her lips meeting Kain’s in a passionate kiss.

Kain’s eyes closed, his arms wrapping around Tala’s body, his hand gripping her hair. The other ran down her side. His need for closeness, for companionship ignited a flame inside of him the more he explored her.

Damien’s voice in the back of his mind frustrated Kain at being interrupted. He pulled away from Tala, cursing under his breath.

He stood from the bed, his eyes wide at what he was being told.

Damien stood on the front lawn, his hand on his hip, the other scrubbing over his neck. His ears perked when Kain and Tala joined him on the wet, green grass.

“Hey, I wish I didn’t have to interrupt you, but Jill should be arriving any moment,” Damien said. His sullen eyes turned towards Tala.

Kain moved the conversation between him and Damien to avoid alerting Tala. Is it as bad as you say?

Damien nodded. Jill said they were all gone by the time she got there. I’m supposed to be the fucking Purifier, Kain! What kind of savior can’t stop the bloodshed he was sent to stop?

Kain put his hand on Damien’s shoulder. It is a lesson we all must learn. Remember what I taught you about the nature of our world. We lose loved ones but do what we can to find reasons to keep living.

Damien growled behind his teeth.

Jill came sauntering up the drive, her head lowered, tongue panting. She stopped in front of Damien, sitting down, ears lowered and whimpering.

Tala drew closer, her breath hastening. She shook her head, tears streaming down her face.

Kain took her in an embrace whispering “I’m sorry” into her ear.

A few hours after Jill’s delivery of the news, Gabriel arrived following a text from Kain.

The alpha greeted Kain, the look on his face grim. “I’m sorry, my friend. How is she?”

Kain shook his head, sighing. His eyes ventured to Tala’s closed door at the top of the stairs.

“Well, what do you propose we do now?” Gabriel asked.

Kain didn’t reply. The roaring sound of a sports car engine caught his attention.

“Were we expecting someone?” Gabriel inquired, suspiciously.

Kain shook his head. His sense of caution peaked following his encounter with Bard in the woods. Nudging Damien in his mind, Kain walked back out onto the front lawn.

Lune sat on the front porch. His triangular ears turned towards the road, his watchful gaze focused on the vehicle.

As it drew closer, Kain saw the crest on the front of the car. Its design familiar and foreboding, yet different from the other few times he’d seen it. For one, the car was white, not the midnight black he’d seen at Lillith’s coven. For another, the wings of the fallen angel were broken, its eyes bound.

Beside him, Lune started to get anxious. Kain knew the lycan had a history with the unwelcome guests.

“Easy,” Kain said to comfort the jittery lycan.

Damien came out into the porch, taking his spot in front of Kain, next to Gabriel. “What crest is that? It’s pretty creepy.”

“The Cardoza family but it has been modified,” Kain replied, agitated.

The car came to a grinding halt, almost hitting Damien’s motorcycle next to Kain’s car.

When the driver’s side opened, Kain’s eyes widened and he sent Lune away as fast as he could. The grey lycan tore around the house out of sight.

A tall woman with stark black hair cascading down her back got out of the driver’s side. She wore a black leather corset, black pants, a blood-red shirt and knee-high leather boots. The woman’s eyes met Kain’s, a saccharine smirk over her lips.

In many ways, she resembled Lilith.

“Who’s the Lilith clone?” Damien asked.

Kain could tell Damien did his best to hide the small trembles in his body. The young lycan’s experience with vampires nearly resulted in his getting killed multiple times. The coven’s queen, Lilith, attempted to force him to become hers or kill him if he refused.

To reassure him, Kain moved closer to Damien, his presence calming his friend. “Emeline Auberts, Anthony’s current lover.”

Damien scoffed. “That’s vague. Annoyingly vague.”

Kain half-snickered.

From the other side of the car, appeared a young man with equally dark hair and a cigarette in his mouth. From the way he held himself, Kain could tell he cared less to be in the lycans’ presence.

“And the jerk off with the cigarette?” Damien snarled. The young man reminded him of Nathaniel before Damien kicked his ass in a fight.

Kain covered a chuckle upon seeing Damien’s reaction despite the intense situation. “Jared Auberts, Emeline’s younger brother.”

Jared’s arrival brought about a grumble from Gabriel.

Damien glanced at the alpha then back at Kain. “There’s a history there, isn’t there?”

Kain sighed, his shoulders dropped. “Unfortunately. Damien, stay close to Gabriel and I. These vampires are stronger than even Lillith.”

Damien swallowed, nodding.

Kain turned his attention to Emeline, his glare stopping her in her tracks.

Emeline snickered. “It’s good to see you too, Alexander.”

“Enough,” Kain snapped. “What do you want?”

Emeline moved her eyes to Damien. “Lillith’s letters did little to describe your beauty, Mr. Pierce. You’re welcome to come with me. I can show you what you can do with that gorgeous body of yours.”

Jill snapped, calling the vampire a bitch and trying to lunge only to have Damien catch and start petting her.

Emeline burst out laughing. “Ah yes, the immortal lycan. I’ve heard of you in passing. Not as impressive in person. I’m surprised Lilith had such trouble taking Damien from you. I doubt I would have the same problem.”

Damien snarled, “Okay, that’s it. I’ve had enough of overly possessive vampire chicks to last me a fucking lifetime.”

Kain held his arm out in front of Damien and warned, “You are treading dangerous ground, vampire. What do you want?”

Jared threw down his cigarette, stomping it out. “Stop toying with them. We’re here to
