“Alyssa,” Bailey quickly explains. “Jacob’s mate.”
A girl who must be Mary walks out of the room, cradling her pregnant belly. “Jacob found his mate? Oh, hi!”
Bailey snaps them out of it and explains what’s happening.
I’m a ball of nerves. I hate being up here when Jacob and his brothers could use my help.
“Enzo is leaving right now,” Bailey says as she nervously bites her nails. “He’s bringing the whole crew.”
“Is there a window that looks out the front?” I ask.
Without answering, Bailey runs down the hall and into a room. I quickly follow her with Moose close on my heels.
“Oh, shit,” she gasps when she looks out of the large window.
I’m terrified to look, but I do. It’s not good.
There are so many of them. Motorcycles and wolves everywhere. A huge polar bear stands at the front, snarling as four large Kodiak bears charge forward and crash into them.
I know immediately which one is Jacob’s bear. He lunges on the polar bear and the two start battling savagely as cold chills rack my body. I can hear the horrible noises from here.
The wolves swarm the other three bears, leaping on their backs as they snap and claw at our men. Ivy screams beside me. Mary is crying.
One of the bears goes down as five wolves leap onto him. This is not good.
I turn back to my man and he’s locked onto the polar bear. Jacob swipes him with his big paw, nailing him in the face. There’s already a red blood spot on the polar bear’s ribs, staining his white fur red.
“I have to go help,” I mutter as I look around the room for a weapon.
Bailey grabs my wrist. “There’s nothing you can do, Alyssa. They’re shifters. They’ll slice you up. Where the hell is my brother?”
The bear that got tackled is back on his feet, swiping and snarling at the circling wolves. The three bears regroup and keep their backs together so the wolves are forced to attack from the front, which is a lot harder and more deadly. There are already four or five dead wolves lying in the dirt with pools of blood leaking out from them.
“Easton is limping!” Ivy says with a gasp. I put my arm on her shoulder and she lets out a sob.
Moose is going crazy in the room. He’s pacing around and barking like mad. He wants to go help his masters but he won’t last two seconds against one of those large wolves.
My eyes dart back to Jacob. He lets out a furious growl as the polar bear chomps on the back of his leg.
“That’s it,” I hiss through gritted teeth. “I’m going out there.”
The three girls stare at me in horror as I charge across the room, desperately looking for a weapon. The lamp? No. God, there’s got to be something…
I open the closet and get a jolt of adrenaline when I see a baseball bat leaning against the wall. I throw the leather glove off and grab it.
It’s not much against a wolf or a polar bear, but I’ll never forgive myself for not helping if something happens to my man.
“Alyssa,” Bailey says as I head for the door. I turn and look at her. “Good luck.”
I nod and race out, closing the door behind me to keep Moose inside. Like it or not, he’s the girls’ last defense if these wolves overrun our guys.
I take the stairs two at a time and burst out the front door. Jacob and Burton’s bears are the closest to me. The horrible sounds of howling, snarling, yelping, and growling make my skin crawl. I ignore all that and tighten my grip on the bat.
Jacob’s Kodiak is grappling with Burton’s polar bear on the ground. Both of their fur is matted with blood. When Jacob smells me, it distracts him for a second. He looks at me and the polar bear takes the opportunity and rolls on top of him. He throws back his head, opens his jaws, and lunges at Jacob’s bear’s neck.
“Nooo!” I run and swing the bat as hard as I can. It slams into the side of his head with a dong. He stumbles back and Jacob leaps on top of him.
That worked out well, but I got more trouble coming. Several wolves break off from the pack and head my way. I swing the bat in warning as I try to back toward the house, but they cut me off, circling around me.
One large one with blood leaking out of his missing eye snaps at me with a snarl. I swing my bat at him and the one behind me lunges forward and nearly takes a bite out of my thigh. I turn and swing the bat, barely grazing his hind leg as he retreats.
Jacob has his paws full with the polar bear and I’m about to be swarmed when the blaring of a siren catches the wolves’ attention. They perk up and regroup as my old firefighting crew barrels onto the ranch in the firetruck I used to ride in.
I watch in awe as Brees heads straight for them. The wolves leap out of the way in terror, scattering around the ranch.
Enzo, Quinton, Brees, and Grey leap out of the truck to help. They all phase into their grizzly bears, except for Grey who looks very happy to be fighting in his human form. He grabs an axe off the side of the truck and struts onto the battlefield like he owns the place.
Jacob and Burton’s bears back away from each other and the two sides regroup. I rush over to them.
“Look who it is,” Grey says with a growl as he glares at me. “Stay away from me, Frye.”
Jacob’s bear comes right up to me and licks my cheek. He looks all bloodied up and exhausted. His body begins to shake and I step back as he phases. Jacob explodes out of him, looking terrified. “What are you doing out here?” he asks with a
