with the clenching.

She sinks into the bed, pulling me down over her since we’re still joined. I follow, extracting my teeth and licking her wound. Contentment rises in me, the beauty of our melded souls striking me anew.

Damn, I’m starting to kind of sound like her, using words like ‘anew’.

Euphoria billows around us as I soften the fingers around her clit, working her down from the horrific height her heat forced her to reach.

As soon as her muscles relax, she falls into exhausted slumber. I pet her hair away from her face, tracing the lines of her eyebrows and following the slope of her nose.

Age and stress lines no longer bracket her face, her sleep so deep she’s disconnected from the worries of the world.

Hoping the worst has passed, I gather the blankets she wasn’t given time to organize, stuffing them around her. When my knot deflates far enough, I pull free and turn her over, minding her bruises and bite mark.

Unable to waste our essences, I catch what I can and offer it to her, smearing some on her lips to entice her to open her mouth.

Her tongue swipes out in a sloppy lick. Before she can close again, I stick a finger between her teeth and pour what I can in. It takes more time, since I don’t want to choke her while she sleeps, but once she’s consumed enough, I can’t deny myself the pleasure of her taste.

I indulge, lapping at her folds, being as gentle as I can manage in hopes I don’t wake her.

When the leak slows to a stop, I grab the thinnest, softest sheet nearby and push the blankets away from one side of her. Taking their place, I face her side before pulling them behind me. They prop me up so I can hug her close without putting any weight on her or shifting her around.

I spread the sheet over us both, creating a makeshift nest. The end of her exhales rattle, the quiet purrs interrupted by her breathing.

My own exhaustion sucks me down into sleep, no part of me immune to the whirlwind of change brought by the last few hours.

In tune with my lifemate even in the fog of sleep, I hug adorable little babies and praise the strongest, most loving female I’ve ever had the privilege to meet.

My lifemate shreds me, only to reform me into a better version of myself.

Dread hangs in the distance, a mountain of problems for us to face.

We’ll tackle them, when the time comes.

Together.

Chapter Twenty-Three

Vander

I could be mad at Jumoke for falling for such an obvious trap, but a sense of inevitability won’t let the emotion form.

She would have found us eventually. In fact, she probably would have found us sooner if she’d wanted. I realize now she’s been waiting for me to reach out to her, her anger growing each hour I failed to chase her down.

She’s been playing me since before I set foot in that wretched facility.

I don’t know her name, where she came from, or the scope of her talents, but a few things have become clear in the last few hours.

She can fuck with my heart.

Literally, she can manipulate the bond between us. One second, I’m craving to sink my teeth into her dark skin, desperate to meld my soul with hers, the next I can’t sense even a hint of a lifemating bond.

Which is why I couldn’t focus while I was flying during our escape. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I felt so discombobulated from parts of my heart being wiped clean.

Another obvious thing? She has mad techy skills. Jumoke tried to explain to me earlier how things weren’t adding up, but now I understand what he meant.

She is the mastermind behind so much of the nonsense we’ve witnessed over the last few months. How far does her reach extend? What does she know? Who are her allies?

I have zero answers to these questions.

And now she knows where we are.

The issue?

I have no fucking clue what her next move will be.

The peaks around our campsite hide the sunrise, but light brightens the sky.

Bleary eyes and rumpled clothing stumble through the half-light, my teammates’ Omegas heading toward the campfire at their Alphas’ behest.

They haven’t gotten much sleep tonight. I’m sure their mates’ aggravation made it difficult for them to settle, especially with such odd circumstances.

Nova’s eyes reflect the distant light, her luminescent blues too clear for comfort.

Despite the lack of sleep, she seems the least affected, a sense of alertness ingrained in her.

“What’s wrong, Vander? Did more happen?”

I realize I must look apprehensive, standing here with my pack in one hand and the electronic case in the other.

“No, Nova. Our plans have not changed,” I respond, grateful for her low volume and steady voice.

Her face has filled out since we found her, but a leanness still plagues her. I know Seeck is doing his best to fatten her up, but some things can only be healed with time.

A twang in my chest tightens my lips before I can school my features.

Shya ducks behind Britani, her nerves too unsettled for her to handle an Alpha scowling at her. Her blonde locks stick out this way and that, not hidden by Britani’s arm. The silver curtain of Britani’s hair shines in the faint light.

So many different hair types.

My lifemate’s raven strands flash through my memory, her dark skin and wine-colored lips lighting my veins. I box up the lust and shut it away, sensing the damage going down that rabbit hole would cause.

Not a single one of these Omegas deserve to put up with what would happen should their lifemates scent my desire while they’re near me.

“Have a hot meal before we head out. No reason to miss an opportunity for good food when you have one.”

I gesture to the tin travel mugs sitting on the warm rocks by the coals. Britani heads over first, slipping her hand into Shya’s and leading her
