It’s not until I’m stopped at a red light a few blocks away that her laughter breaks the silence.
I look over to see her covering her mouth with one hand, her body shaking with laughter. “What’s so funny?”
“I think what we just did was illegal,” she says through her laughter.
My mouth drops open. “We?” I shake my head. “That was all you.”
“Hey! You were an active participant! Besides, I didn’t see you trying to stop me.”
“True.” I shrug. “I don’t even care. It was amazing.”
“Your brother’s a cop,” she points out.
The light turns green and I reach for her hand as I begin driving again. “Ronan wouldn’t arrest either of us. Besides, there’s no way in hell I’m telling anyone what just happened.”
Hannah laughs again and strokes the back of my hand with her free hand.
“I’m sorry we got interrupted before you—” she trails off meaningfully.
I grin ruefully. “Not as sorry as I am.”
She bites back a smile. “I promise to make it up to you.” At her words, my mind goes to all sorts of dark and sexy places.
“I can’t wait,” I say, stroking a thumb over the back of her hand.
She’s quiet for a minute and when she speaks again, her voice is more serious. “Will you tell your family about us? I mean, that we’re—whatever this is?” She looks adorably flustered and it makes me grin.
“That we’re dating? I think it’s a little late for that one. If my sister knows, you can bet that my brothers probably know too.”
She nods, looking at our joined hands rather than at me. “Makes sense.” She still looks thoughtful. “What about…” She trails off and I realize what she’s trying to ask.
“The rest of the world?” I ask. “Work?”
“Yeah.” Her voice is quiet. It strikes me that this is more important to her than she wants to let on.
“Hannah, I don’t care who knows about us,” I say. “I like you. A lot. I love being with you and I don’t care what other people think about us. But I get that it’s easy for me to say that when I’m the boss and you work for me. We live in a small town and people can be judgmental. I don’t know if people would judge us or not. I’d like to think they wouldn’t. But I don’t want to put you in that position. So, I’m leaving it up to you. We can shout it from the rooftops, or we can keep things quiet. It’s totally your call. Whatever you decide is fine with me.”
She nods and takes a deep breath. “I think maybe we should keep things quiet. For now, at least.”
I pull her hand up to my lips to kiss it, lingering for a moment.
“You got it. I’ll talk to Claire. If she hasn’t already said something, I’ll get her word that she won’t.”
Hannah nods. “Thanks.”
When we get back to Hannah’s house, I turn off the truck and walk around to open her door. I’m aware of the possibility of nosy neighbors, my nosy sister or a curious eight-year-old. I don’t want to do anything to make Hannah uncomfortable. So, I’m the perfect gentleman as I walk her to her door, her hand in mine. When she turns to me, I can see a hint of the smoldering lust from earlier in her eyes. I know my own gaze is hungry, wanting. I don’t try to hide it from her. Hannah sucks in a ragged breath and lets it out on a sigh. There are a dozen different things I want to say right now, and I can see in her eyes it’s the same for her. But neither of us are ready for that conversation. Besides, this isn’t the time or place for it. Instead, Hannah gives me a smile and leans toward me, one hand on my chest for balance. Her lips brush mine in a light kiss, then she presses her cheek to mine.
“Goodnight, Finn,” she whispers. I can feel her breath on my skin. The erection that never completely abandoned me springs to life once more. I want to pull her to me. I want to push her back against the front door and fuck her senseless. I want to drop to my knees and taste her again. I want a thousand different sexy, dirty things with this woman and none of them are possible right now. Not with her son and my sister on the other side of this door. I somehow manage to keep my touch light as I reach a hand up to brush her cheek.
“Goodnight, Hannah.”
She gives me one last look, full of sexy promises before turning to open the door. I step back and watch her go inside, closing the door behind her. Each step back to my truck is harder than the one before it. Not just because of the painful erection I’m sporting. It’s because now that Hannah and I have made the leap from friendship to dating, I want to explore that with her. I want to spend all my time making her smile, making her laugh, making her moan, making her come. It occurs to me as I drive away from her house that I might be diving in too deep, too fast with Hannah. But I can’t find it in me to care.
Chapter Nineteen
Hannah
Claire is alone in the living room when I enter. She stands and turns off the television when she sees me.
I smile. “How was he?”
Claire’s face lights up. “Liam was great,” she says. “He’s an awesome kid. We ate pizza and candy and watched a movie and a half before he passed out on the couch.” Her face goes serious for a moment. “He’s heavier than he looks.”
I laugh. “Sorry you had to carry him,” I say sympathetically. “He’s getting too big for that.”
She shrugs. “I don’t mind. Did you guys have fun?”
