He smirked. “I’d say you’re welcome, but the pleasure was all mine.”
With his feet on the floor, he winked at her. “Seeing as I have to deal with this, you can sanitize the island.”
She gasped with wide eyes and then her lips pursed as she gave him a dirty look. “You bastard. This was all your idea!”
He pointed a finger at her as he went through the doorway, “You got to come twice though, so it’s all fair.”
BY THE TIME HE CAME out of the bathroom, Stephanie had padded back into his bedroom wearing his shirt and carrying a pair of panties and a book.
“Leave ’em, honey.”
She glanced at the panties and back at him. “You can’t be serious. Again? Now?”
He found her attitude refreshing and he grinned. “Not now, but seeing as you don’t need that much sleep,” he shrugged, “I find myself in the mood later, I ain’t wasting time tearing off your panties.”
With a shake of her head, she tossed the underwear onto a chair in the corner and settled herself in bed. He pulled on a pair of boxers and climbed into bed with her. A book with a wolf on the cover laid on her lap.
She slouched into the bed, but gave him a curious look. “So, what’s the deal? Two of your brothers had their asses kicked, but the people who did it said they didn’t?”
With one hand, he snatched the book from her lap while curling her to him with his other. “You don’t need to worry about that, Steph.”
Her head tilted. “Didn’t say I was worried, man. Just trying to understand this stuff. You would think hanging with Turk, I’d know more, but I don’t. Seems weird to me they’d get beaten—”
“Beat each other,” he corrected.
Her eyes rounded. “What the hell?”
A reluctant smile curled his lips. “That’s why I don’t want you thinkin’ about it, Steph. It’s club business—”
She pushed at his chest, but left her hand there. “Don’t give me that shit, Mike.”
“Mike?”
She grinned. “Yeah. And don’t try to change the subject. Why would those two kick each other’s ass and blame another group for it?”
He sighed. “For one thing, to sell product for themselves, though that’s not their end game. Marijuana isn’t bringing us as much money, it’s becoming more of a headache, but these two have dug their heels in to stick with it.”
“But why? If the money’s drying up, it doesn’t make sense.”
“Money won’t dry up if our club deals harder drugs.”
She leaned up and took her hand from his chest. He wanted to snatch it back, but he didn’t.
“Turk and them don’t do that shit.”
He grinned. “Right. Volt had good reason to clean up that chapter. I didn’t have that chance. Brink, the president before me, laid the groundwork and the brothers like the income. That’s the biggest problem. If I could guarantee them steady income, the majority would get out of drugs.”
She shifted to her side, put her elbow on her pillow and propped her head in her hand. “No income is guaranteed. Why can’t you offer them alternatives?”
He rolled so he was on his side. “I could and I have in the past, but it comes down to laziness.”
“They don’t want to work at anything new, and new things always take a ton of work.”
“Yeah,” he muttered. Her book lay between them and he picked it up again. “So you read this stuff? Is it what inspired your sketches?”
Her deft fingers plucked the book from him. “Yes, I read it. And not exactly on the sketches. I’ve always like sketching wolves, dogs, and sometimes bears.”
His fingers traced the supple skin of her index finger along the top of her hand and up to her wrist. “Why?”
“Why those animals?”
He nodded.
“Well, I always wanted a dog, but we never had one. Not one of our own, since Sammy had one, but Zippy was his.” Her eyes met his. “You know what I mean?”
“Yeah, Zippy was a damn good dog.”
She smiled and it hit him in his gut. That smile like a light beaming at him felt damn good; he didn’t get that from the sweet-butts. Rather than dwell on that, he realized she dodged his question.
“What about the wolves and bears?”
Her lips pulled to the side for a beat. “It doesn’t take much to tweak a dog to a wolf. But in one of my sketches, the wolf was behind a campfire and I decided a bear should be there too. Found I could draw a better bear than a wolf.”
His chin lifted. “That’s how you started practicing flames, too, right?”
Her eyes focused on a spot over his shoulder and her voice sounded strange when she murmured, “Yeah.”
He took advantage of her distraction and snatched the book only to toss it on the nightstand. “Sounds like there’s a story there, Combes.”
She twisted her lips. “Nah. Did your brothers admit to beating one another?”
“No. They weren’t able to get to the clubhouse.”
“Sketchy,” she murmured.
He rolled to turn off the light, afterward he tucked her to his side. “Let’s get some sleep, woman.”
Her hand slid down his belly to trace his boxers. “I find it contradictory that you insist I sleep without panties, but you’re wearing these.”
He grabbed her hand and slid it inside the fly. “Don’t have to take these off to get inside you.”
Since his vision had adjusted to the dark, he noticed her eyes flashing at him. Then her fingers gripped the base of his cock and stroked up.
He hissed, but pulled her hand away. “Woman, do not start shit with me.”
She kissed his jaw. “Hasn’t been shit any of the last three times we’ve fucked. But I’ll let you sleep.”

TRUE TO HIS WORD, HAR woke me in the dead of night and had his way with me. While he cleaned up in the bathroom, I marveled at how voracious he could be. I
