The crunching of a twig in the nearby brush caught her attention. She stared at the bush behind the pack’s house to try to get a glimpse of what could be there. Her senses tuning into a familiar scent.
Gasping, she jumped from the window onto the nearby tree and slid down to the ground. Out of the brush, a wolf with ash grey fur sauntered out of the shadows.
“Tobias!” Tala ran to her brother, embracing him around his neck just as he shifted to human form.
“Hey, sis.” The lycan’s voice sounded weak. “I need your help.”
Chapter Fourteen
Tala slapped her brother across the face, her eyes full of fury. “Why did you run from the hospital, you idiot?”
Tobias rubbed his cheek, looked at his hand and then back at his sister. “Kain came and interrogated me shortly after you left. The man’s terrifying Tala, what was I supposed to do? I’m in trouble and technically on the run from the Don. Was I supposed to wait for one of his hitmen to come and put a bullet in my brain or poison me?”
“You could’ve come here and asked for help! Where’ve you been?!” Tears streamed down Tala’s face.
Tobias recounted the events that happened while he’d been held prisoner by Anthony. The Don of Great Falls promised to spare he and Tala’s life if Tobias would do but two things for him - steal the talon from Kain and set him up to be taken prisoner.
Tala’s heart pounded. “Tobias, you need to go to Damien. Tell him exactly what you just told me.”
Tobias rolled his eyes, scoffing. “Right. What’s he going to do? You can’t win this, Tala. Anthony has connections. He can get to whomever he wants. Kain. Damien. It doesn’t matter. I came here to see if you wanted to come with me. I don’t want my big sister involved in this. It’s dark shit. Darker than anything I’ve ever seen.”
With fists clenched at her side, Tala grew angrier at the thought of her brother’s offer to abandon the pack just because things looked dangerous. She’d come to love them in the short time she’d been there and wanted to do whatever she could to help.
Kain was her mate. The idea of him being hurt or falling into a trap infuriated her. “What does he want, Tobias? Why does he want Alex?”
“To hell if I know. Maybe they pissed each other off in the last century or two. I’m telling you, it’s not a matter of if Anthony’s going to get what he wants, it’s when. Even Kain won’t know what’s coming,” Tobias pleaded with his sister to leave with him.
Tala ground her fangs, turning her back on her brother. “Leave then. I’m not going with you. Alex is my mate, Tobias. I’m staying by his side. You haven’t seen what he can do and yes, it’s terrifying, but I know he’ll be okay.”
Tobias sneered, “Fine. If you want to commit suicide, who am I to stop you. I just hope you don’t get hurt. I’ve seen things too and believe me, staying away from Kain is better than experiencing what I’ve been through.”
Pain grew in Tala’s heart at the idea of losing her brother. She pleaded with him one last time to ask the pack for help but Tobias didn’t listen. The look of terror in his eyes told her all she needed to know. When she inquired more about what Tobias had seen, he quickly shut her down.
“Tobias,” Tala sighed as she watched the last remnant of her family shift into his wolf form and disappear into the forest behind the house.
When Kain arrived home from the dinner with Desdemona, he found Tala in the backyard staring out into the woods beyond the back of the house. Glistening tears dripped down her face onto the railing she leaned against. The way she curled her fingers beneath her hand and the trembling in her shoulders showed him how upset she was.
Trying not scare her, Kain carefully approached her, his height allowing him to encase her between his arms and body. Placing a soft kiss on her hair he asked her what was wrong.
At first, Tala appeared apprehensive to tell him. She bit her shaking lower lip before recalling the meeting with her brother and how scared he looked. The warning he gave Tala unnerved Kain. During the late-night visit he’d paid Tobias shortly after finding him, he could tell the young lycan had things he wanted to say but hesitated. Other details like his escape seemed unrealistic as well. With each new piece of information Kain gathered from Tala, he became more certain about his initial theory regarding Anthony.
“He told you nothing about what he saw? No details about his experience?” Kain asked.
Tala shook her head. “He refused to. No matter how much I pleaded with him. Please, Alex. I know he’s wrong for running but I can’t blame him. Isn’t there some way we can find him?”
Kain took a moment to think. On the wind he caught a faint whiff of Tobias. He called to his adopted son. Clint came running out of the house. Kain ordered him to track the scent, reassuring Tala if Tobias could be found, Clint would bring him back. If not, there wasn’t much Kain could do.
The two of them stood on the back porch for what seemed like hours. Tala didn’t seem like she wanted to talk, and Kain made it a point not to pressure her to do so. Around late afternoon, to take her mind off the meeting with Tobias, Kain offered for them to take some down time since things appeared quiet for the time being.
Breathing hot in his lover’s ear, “Come hunting with me. There is nothing more we can do for now, and it
