They both just stare at me.
“What?” My hands land on my hips and I’m breathing fast.
“Yes, we have done a full background check on him. He is not…” Davina starts until I cut her off.
“Stop! I don’t want to hear it. Just answer this, is my life in danger being with him?”
They both look to each other before Davina reluctantly answers, “No, but…”
“No buts. I don’t want to hear any more. I’m a twenty-nine-year-old woman. I can find out for myself if he’s a douchebag or not. If I get my heart broken, then that’s my own fault. If I have to leave to testify, then again, that’s on me. As far as I’m concerned, this discussion is done, and I think it’s time for you both to leave. Otherwise, I’m making the phone call neither of you want and I’m out of the program. Understand… I need time to think and space from this bullshit that is my life. I’m fine, I’m safe, and for once I’m fucking happy. You can show yourselves out.” I storm down the hallway to my office, slamming the door and slumping back against it. Sliding slowly down to the floor, the tears start to fall. But surprisingly they are happy tears.
I did what I haven’t been able to do for four years.
I took control of my life.
Kurt being in my life is perfect, and I’ll be damned if they take this one piece of heaven away from me this time.
He’s mine and I’m not giving him up.
Not yet, anyway…
Chapter Nine
KURT
“Why is it, the one day I really need the swell pumping, the surf is flat as a board? Shit.” Putting the truck in reverse, I start moving out of my parking spot, stopping to look up at Asha’s house. I want to drive straight up to see her, but I know I need to calm down first. She doesn’t need to see me this strung out. Then she’ll wonder what’s going on, and I’m not sure I’m ready to share it with her yet.
There’s time to kill before she arrives for dinner, and I think a run is what I need. Heading upstairs to my bedroom, I send Seth a message to meet me here in twenty minutes. Thankfully he’s had a fucked-up day too, so he’s happy to join me pounding the pavement to get rid of the frustration.
I’m lacing my shoes up when the doorbell rings. I must have locked it by mistake on the way in.
“Coming, you impatient bastard,” I yell, running down the stairs, jumping the last couple and pulling the door open, not to Seth, but another shitstorm.
“We need to talk!” she grunts.
“Not interested.”
“Don’t give a fuck. Now move so I can get in.” She drops her shoulder into mine as she pushes past me.
“By all means, Davina, come on in. Not like I was getting ready to go somewhere or told you I didn’t want to talk.” I follow her into the living room.
“Shut up. You knew this was coming. What the fuck were you thinking? You know to stay away from her.” Her eyes are pleading with me to make this easy on her.
“I didn’t know who she was,” I say, trying to convince her, but it’s a pathetic answer.
“Bullshit. You might not know who she is, but you know why she is in that house. Yet you went after her anyway. Fuck, Kurt, you know what has to happen now. Why do that to her? She’s sweet and doesn’t deserve this.” She turns her back to me because she knows what I’m about to say.
“Don’t. You. Fucking. Dare. Move. Her,” I growl at her. “Look at me and stop being gutless.”
“Jesus, Kurt, what did you expect? You know what that house is used for. What am I supposed to tell my boss, hmm? Oh, yeah, there’s a boyfriend on the scene for our star witness in the biggest case on the roster at the moment. But don’t worry, he’s a nice guy and satisfies her in bed. I mean, that’s what it’s about, isn’t it? You’re getting your rocks off, and she is mesmerized because she hasn’t seen cock in over four years.”
“How dare you speak about Asha that way! I don’t care what you think about me, but you never say things like that about her again. Do you understand?” I’m now standing less than a foot from her face.
“God damn it, you’re falling for her, aren’t you. Shit, you know better than that. Walk away now, don’t break her heart and yours.”
“Not happening!” I try to pull back my anger, but I only piss Davina off more. “And I don’t give a fuck who you find but get rid of Scott. I don’t want him anywhere near her. I don’t trust him.”
“Like it’s that easy! There is no one else. So, he’s it, whether we like it or not. Do you think I was happy about it either?”
I walk past her, running my hand through my hair with frustration. “What about John? He might be a womanizer away from the job, but at least on the job I trust him.” I look out to the ocean, trying to find something to calm me a little.
“He’s on a job he can’t leave. I offered you the fucking job and you said no, so you leave me no option. I can’t protect her like she needs, with my broken leg.” Davina hobbles over, coming up beside me.
“I’m not an agent anymore. I can’t handle it. You know that.” Looking down, I close my eyes, breathing in and out slowly, centering myself.
“I know, it’s just… I did something stupid with this job,” she whispers.
I look up at her. “What?” My heart pounds, waiting for the answer.
“I got close to her, and she’s
