the joy swells in my heart.

Happiness.

Pure, raw, happiness.

It has only taken what feels like forever.

But here we are.

Finally.

“You two are together now?” Eve squeals, skipping around my table as I try to drink my coffee.

“Not together, we just slept together.”

“Oh, no, dear,” Doris says, spinning around in her chair at the sight of Eve putting on a little show, “You’re not giving it too soon, are you? That’s how you lose them.”

“It was only once,” I say, shrugging. “And oh, it was worth being used and abused for.”

“You have to keep them hanging,” Doris says, wiggling her finger. “It’s the only way to ensure they do what you want and keep doing it. Play hard to get, just make sure you do it forever.”

I laugh. “I promise not to throw myself at him, Doris.”

“And make sure he works hard for it, treats you right. Don’t go giving up the cake without the coffee.”

Eve giggles. “Any other fab advice, Doris?”

“No, that’s about it. Now, tell me, how was the sex? Did he bring you to orgasm? It’s important females orgasm. Without it, you’ll get bored and end up in the arms of another man.”

I grin at her. “Oh, he made sure I enjoyed myself.”

Doris nods sternly. “That’s good. Make sure it happens every time. I was with a man once, absolutely useless, he would ejaculate before he even got close to me. Now, I’m not one to judge a man for that, but he couldn’t even bring me to my release first. They forget they have other parts to use outside of their penis.”

I snort on my coffee imagining Doris and her displeased face at any man who didn’t do what she liked. “Doris, you’re a bad, bad woman.”

“Or—” she wiggles her little old finger “—a smart one.”

That she certainly is.

“Well, as always, your advice doesn’t go unnoticed, Doris,” I say to her, raising my cup in a cheers.

“You’ll thank me for it when that man of yours is eating out of the palm of your hand. Look at Cash, he’s always in here sniffing around Eve like she’s on heat.”

I snort.

Eve grins. “She’s right, he does. He’s like a horny dog, always hanging around in hopes he might catch a glimpse.”

We all laugh.

“You girls keep me young,” Doris says. “But, I must leave. I have a date.”

“A date!” Eve and I both cry out.

“I thought you were done with wrinkly old balls,” I say, grinning.

“I never said I was going to look at his balls, love. It’s just dinner. All this talk about sex has me missing it, can you believe? There is no certainty at his age it’ll even work, but Doris is up for the challenge.”

She stands and we are smothering our laughs as she waves at us and walks out the door.

“When I grow up, I really want to be like her,” I say. “I’m sure I’ve said that a million times, but seriously, she is so sassy.”

“That she is!” Eve smiles at the empty door, then she looks back at me. “Now, tell me everything that happened with Adan. I want the full details.”

I stand. “I will, but I have to be at the club. They want a meeting with me about Devin.”

Eve stomps her foot. “Ugh, damned club. Can’t they wait?”

“Apparently not. I’ll come back after.”

I hug her and leave, walking over to the garage. I chat to Hank and Hugh before heading out back through the gate to the clubhouse. Riggs told me I better be here or he’ll sort Devin out in his own way and I won’t like how that happens.

I have no doubt I won’t like it.

So, here I am.

Riggs, Adan, Beckett, and Remy are all sitting at the table they have their weekly church meetings in, and when I enter the room, they look up. Adan’s eyes grow all hot and lusty, and it takes everything for me not to pause and clench my legs together because that look, hot damn, it makes a girl’s insides do crazy things.

“You’re late,” Riggs says as I take a seat beside Adan.

“Sorry,” I murmur. “I got distracted with Doris.”

His face softens. How can you be mad at anything to do with Doris?

“Talk to me about everything that happened with Devin,” he finally says after a few moments of silence.

I tell him everything.

“He’s goin’ to kidnap her,” Beckett points out. “Clear as fuckin’ day. Can guarantee his plan is to have her taken and threatened into signing some sort of document that’ll give him full rights.

Oh. Shit.

I didn’t think of that scenario.

“I think you’re right,” Remy agrees. “He’s probably got someone lined up to do it, he’s too pissy to get his hands dirty.”

“It makes sense,” I say. “He’s definitely that type, and, in his mind, it’ll be the perfect plan. Take me and torture me into signing.”

“Problem is, how the fuck do we get him to back off?” Adan mutters. “Because right now, the only way I can see us getting him off her back, is with brutal fuckin’ force that’ll take him out.”

I blink. “You can’t kill someone just to get them to go away.”

Adan’s eyes meet mine. “When it comes to you I can.”

Oh boy.

“No death,” Riggs mutters. “We gotta be smarter than him. Gotta get something on him that’ll get him to back off.”

“It would need to be somethin’ fuckin’ big to get him to stay the fuck away,” Remy adds. “He don’t seem like the type to just fuck off and be done with it.”

He’s right.

He’s not.

We would need to find something that would be big enough to scare him off for good.

But what?

“Only person who knows if we can get dirt on him is you,” Riggs says to me. “You got anything on him? Anything at all?”

I shake my head. “No, I left before I ever got too involved in his life. I avoided him where possible growing up. He’s been nothing but a thorn in my side for years. I can’t think of anything you
