Excerpt from Book Two:

CLAIMING SCARLETT

I can't sleep, thoughts of what I have done this evening race through my mind. I've stolen this lost little girl away from her friends and her family. I've drugged her and lied to her, just so I can determine if she really is the one. I should have considered what I'm going to do if she isn't the one I've been searching for. I'll have to throw her back out there to the wolves. I know they are following her, hounding her, patiently waiting for the right time to pounce. Just like I was, but I'm impatient. I should have known it was too early. She's too young.

I have to talk to her now that I have her here. I need to know if she is going to be bound to me forever. I try not to make any noise in the dark when I get up out of bed and walk towards her. She’s sleeping on the couch, I didn’t think I could handle her sleeping on the bed beside me yet. Crouching down slowly in front of her, I feel nervous suddenly. I can't wake her up, she's sleeping so soundly. I'll have to go a little easier on the smoke with her tomorrow, it might be too much for her to handle.

Marcus is to blame for making this so difficult. He has left me to explain everything to her, while he kept her in complete darkness about her bloodline. Not only has he kept her ignorant of her history he has put his only daughter in danger. By leaving the coven he has left behind our protection, leaving her without the smoke, the charms and spells that we use to protect ourselves. I'm surprised she's lasted this long without being attacked. At least Marcus still has the elixirs but I'm sure he hasn't shared them with Scarlett.

My gaze settles on her closed eyes, flickering quickly beneath her lids. She's dreaming, but frantically. She's having a nightmare. Without thinking, I brush her wet hair from her face. She's sweating and I can feel her heart racing. Gently placing my fingers on her temples, I close my eyes. For a brief moment I am able to get a glimpse of the demon haunting her, hunting her and seeking to possess her.

‘She needs me,' I whisper out loud, shocked by my urgent and fierce need to protect her. I realize I have no choice but to look after her, regardless if she's the one or not I have to keep her safe. I consider waking her up as I slowly remove my hands from her warm skin but she sighs peacefully as though her turmoil has ended. Have I had something to do with it? Can I have that effect on her?

My curiosity with her overwhelms me. I watch her a little longer. She is so young. If she is the one then I have to be willing to wait another year for her, as I was advised. I allow my fingers to graze her exposed arm and I rest my hand over hers. I can feel her heart rate slowing, her eyes are no longer flickering. I won't wake her now. I can talk to her tomorrow.
