When asked how he knew, Kyle told Kain Zane informed him of the wound in Kain’s shoulder and the cuts made by a silver blade on his torso and his wrists.
“I am fine, Kyle. A bit fatigued since I was not allowed to sleep for forty-eight hours and hungry as Sun’s hell but fine.” Kain assured the doctor as they walked up the front steps to find Jill standing in the doorway.
The female lycan greeted her old friend with a hug. “I’m so relieved to see you’re doing well.”
“Jillian, Tala?” Was all Kain said in reply.
“She’s in the guest room. Damien wishes to see you as soon as you can make time. I can imagine Kyle won’t leave you alone until he gives you a check-up.” Jill chuckled and made way for Kain to walk through the door.
Ramona led Kain and Kyle to a room they could use so Kain could be examined. As he thought, Kyle quizzed him about how he’d felt while shining a bright light in Kain’s eyes. Once the doctor examined and dressed Kain’s wounds, Kain demanded Ramona take him to Tala.
The vampiress offered a curt bow and led him through the house to another room and opened the door. Tala sat in the window looking out into the sky. Luna’s light brought out the red in her deep locks, giving her an ethereal glow.
Kain’s heart almost fell through his stomach. His breath heaved at seeing his mate awake and from the looks of her, unharmed. “Tala.”
Tala turned at hearing her name, her eyes enlarged. She got up to run into her mate’s open arms, repeating his name over and over as her arms held him tight.
With a swelled heart, Kain kissed Tala’s lips, the salt of the streaming tears tasted bitter-sweet on his tongue. One hand gripped her hair while the other traveled down her body. The clearing of a throat at the door drew Kain’s attention to Kyle who gestured his head to ask Kain for his attention.
Kain promised Tala he’d be back and left to talk. “What is it?”
Kyle’s eyes glanced at Tala then at Kain. They appeared glossy despite the smile he wore. “Kain, she’s with pup. You’re going to be a father.”
Strength left Kain, threatening to send him to his knee. The soft voice of Tenebris reminded him of the god’s promise to end the bane with Kain and not travel to his child. It filled Kain with joy knowing his line would be continued but saddened him to think he wouldn’t live long enough to see them.
Speechless, Kain nodded a thank you to Kyle and returned to Tala. “Are you alright, my love?”
Tala brushed a lock of hair away from her face, averting confusion-filled eyes. “I..I think so. I don’t remember much of what happened. It feels like I’ve been asleep for a long time, but I don’t remember why.”
Barghast kept his word.
Petting his face, Tala asked Kain why he looked sad. Kain shook his head, smiling.
“It is nothing, sweetheart. I am overjoyed to see you are safe.”
A puzzled look crossed Tala’s eyes. To take her attention away from him, Kain took her down to the mattress of the bed, pressing her against the sheets with his kisses. He hadn’t been able to make love to his mate and worried he may never get the chance to again. He wasn’t going to let Barghast’s deal ruin his time with her.
Damien waited for Kain in the main living room of the guest house. Kain arrived in the early morning hours following his love-making with Tala. His body ached, his shoulder hurt, but he focused his mind on what Damien would likely assault him with.
“I take it you saw most of what happened? I did my best to keep our channel open.”
Damien nodded. “Yeah. How’re you doing?”
“My shoulder aches but I am guessing there are more pressing matters you wish to discuss.” Kain wondered if Damien knew about the mark on his hand. He’d done his best to block that part of the encounter off to avoid worrying Damien.
The young lycan clenched his fangs, snarling through them. “I..I have something I haven’t told you. I know you know already since you’ve asked about it multiple times.”
Kain did a signature lean against the fireplace, arms crossed, eyes locked on Damien.
A few minutes passed before Damien asked Kain if there was any way his mentor would consider staying away from the final fight. The stern look meeting his amethyst gaze bade Damien to give more information. “I saw your death, Kain. In a vision. I know it’s stupid of me to ask but would you consider staying here, please? I don’t want you to die.”
A sigh escaped Kain’s nostrils. He suspected Damien’s behavior and the fact he tried so hard to hide a corner of his mind had to do with Kain’s death. “In truth, I do not expect to survive this either. I haven’t for a while now. However, you cannot ask me to let you go in and fight Anthony without me. You saw only what happened through my eyes. You did not see it all. No, Damien. I will not stand by idly.”
Pain filled Damien’s eyes. He clenched his fists at his sides, shoulders trembling. He couldn’t get another word out before Jill came into the room and informed them that Zane had returned. The vampire requested everyone to meet him in the main meeting hall.
Desdemona and Ramona were all in the room as well as Dante, Steele, Magnus and Zane. Gabriel, Cade, Lune, Scott and Tyler all turned their eyes on the three lycans as they entered the room.
Zane took the center of the room. “The time to end this has arrived. First, I want to lay everyone’s fear to rest. Nathaniel is dead. Has
