Buster whined again. Tonio sat down next to him and rubbed his head. He stared out of the gently swinging cart to see Juicy Fun in all its run-down, abandoned glory. ā€œYouā€™ll be okay, boy. Weā€™re not going to fall.ā€

Buster recognized something in his tone, and in his expressionā€”Tonio was calm, but it wasnā€™t all a good calm. He had a little bit of that face Buster had seen before, after talking to his dad, and when Mia got upset with him. A kind of nothing, an absence in his expression. Not sad, not worried ā€¦ just nothing.

He wanted to find out why but couldnā€™t calm his own mind down. No living thing should ever be this high up, especially in a giant machine they werenā€™t even controlling. The Ferris wheel stopped moving when they were all the way at the topā€”unable to leave, no way to get down even if they could open the door.

After a while of shivering, with Tonio silently petting him, Buster started to relax. But he felt so tired. Head resting in Tonioā€™s lap, fingers running through his fur ā€¦ and heā€™d been up all night, too. Maybe it wouldnā€™t be so bad if he just ā€¦ took a nap.

ā€œThatā€™s better,ā€ Tonio whispered. He patted Busterā€™s stomach and watched his breathing relax. Tonio tilted his head back and rested it on the bench along the cartā€™s side. ā€œWeā€™ll talk when you wake up.ā€

Buster jolted awake suddenly and set the cart swinging as he frantically tried to remember where he was. The angle of the sun meant it was past noon, and the angle of the ground meant they were way past the height he was comfortable with!!! Buster barked in surprise and jumped away from the edge. Tonio caught him and pushed him down to a sitting position gently.

ā€œWeā€™re okay. Itā€™s okay. Look at me.ā€ Busterā€™s reddish-brown eyes stared into Tonioā€™s just-brown ones. ā€œTake a deep breath.ā€ Buster mimicked Tonioā€™s long breath, held his lungs full for a few moments, then mirrored Tonioā€™s slow release. ā€œGood. Nothingā€™s going to happen to you up here, okay? Iā€™ve got you.ā€

Buster did start to relax at Tonioā€™s words, and got his bearings enough to underspeak a thank you.

ā€œYouā€™re welcome.ā€ Tonio relaxed, too, when Buster didnā€™t seem to be in crisis mode. ā€œIā€™m sorry I messed this up so bad, Buster.ā€

You?

ā€œI thought I could save you, or something. I donā€™t know. I thought Iā€™d show up and be a hero. But of course I couldnā€™t do that. I canā€™t do anything that matters.ā€

How did you even get here?

ā€œI asked some dogs!ā€ He threw his arms up. ā€œBecause thatā€™s a normal thing I can do now, I guess. I knew you were gone immediately, and everybody at the tournament was asking about you. I just said you knew your way home and were tired of the crowd. Like I was. Mozart didnā€™t know where you were, but I went to visit Jpeg. She ā€¦ā€ He shook his head, not believing what heā€™d seen. ā€œShe printed out directions for me from the internet. And then I asked Skyler to drive me here. I didnā€™t even have to tell anyone why! Mia didnā€™t really pay attention when I was talking to Mozart, and when I told Skyler where I was going, she just said I was ā€˜the coolest kid everā€™ for going to a place that was ā€˜so definitely, absolutely hauntedā€™ and didnā€™t ask any other questions.ā€

Thatā€™s amazing! Buster headbutted Tonioā€™s chest. You got here all on your own!

ā€œI didnā€™t do anything. Oh, andā€”ā€ He pulled a small plastic bag of dog food and another bag of trail mix out of his cargo pockets. ā€œDevon gave me some snacks to bring. Or he just gave me some snacks for no reason. Iā€™m not sure.ā€

I couldnā€™t resist the snacks but underspoke while I chewed.

You did an adventure! You talked to people. Asked questions. Came all the way out here with no idea what youā€™d find. Thatā€™s brave. You wouldnā€™t have done that a month ago.

ā€œYeah, but it doesnā€™t matter. They caught me, and now weā€™re both just locked up. What is happening? What do they want? I know youā€™re in trouble for telling me youā€™re smart, butā€”ā€

They decided Iā€™m a Bad Dog. Theyā€™re going to send me to The Farm.

ā€œI donā€™t know that thing you did with your paw. Send you where?ā€

I tried to figure out a way to tell him. Place ā€¦ like ā€¦ the Linsā€™ shelter.

ā€œA farm?ā€

Yes. THE Farm.

ā€œWhatā€™s that?ā€

Itā€™s supposed to be a place humans have never gone. Itā€™s where Bad Dogs go, and where Dog Court is based. I donā€™t know where it is, but I would be there forever. No more humans. You get all the food you need, and itā€™s supposed to be pretty, but thereā€™s nothing to do. Just sitting around for the rest of your life.

ā€œSounds kind of nice,ā€ Tonio mumbled.

Buster bared his teeth. No. I want to be here, with you.

Tonioā€™s eyes filled with tears almost immediately. ā€œWhy? Youā€™re only in trouble because of me.ā€

Iā€™m in trouble because I broke the rules. You didnā€™t do that.

ā€œStill. You were trying to help me.ā€

And I would do it again!

Tonio buried his face in Busterā€™s fur. ā€œYouā€™re a good friend.ā€ His voice came out muffled, but Buster understood.

So are you.

Buster heard someone down at the base of the Ferris wheel. He stepped to the edgeā€”but then thought better of it and stayed in the middle. The cart jerked back into motion suddenly, swinging them toward the ground.

ā€œAm I in trouble, too? What will they do to me?ā€ Tonio asked.

Buster tilted his tail into an unsure pose. I donā€™t know. Iā€™ve never heard of what happens when a human finds out. He didnā€™t want to tell Tonio that he was scared, too. They couldnā€™t do anything terrible to him ā€¦ right? He was a human!

Tonio stared out of the cart and rubbed at Busterā€™s head absentmindedly. ā€œIf it wasnā€™t for my anxiety, you wouldnā€™t be
