I looked down, the anger rising in my body, but there was nothing I could do. I was stuck. I had to hold out a little longer. I had to be alive when my brothers came for Angel and me.
***
Angel and I shared a small cell, two small pallet mattresses, a toilet and sink, and nothing else. At first, I was happy to be left alone in the cell with Angel. We told each other stories, played silly games, shared wishes and dreams, but then a day turned into a week, and the week turned into a month. Sometimes they forgot to feed us, and other times it was so cold I was sure one of us would die of hypothermia before the warm sun could break over the horizon.
The only time I was ever out of the room was when Ruby wanted to play. She was a sadist, through and through. Her batshit crazy husband made sure she had everything she could ever desire. The trafficking business was good, and seemingly they were the very best and could ask a big price tag. Yet nothing he ever brought her seemed to light her eyes the same way hearing someone scream in pain did.
“Inkpop, you think they will let me outside today?”
I sighed and let my head hit the wall behind me, keeping my eyes closed. Who knew a fucking six year old could ask so many fucking questions, “I don’t know Angel. I don’t think so.”
“I’m so bored.”
“Practice your handstands.”
“No.” She grumbled.
“Make up a story.”
She let out a loud sigh, “I don’t have anymore. Can’t we just ask them to let us outside for a little while?”
“Look, Angel, they’re not going to let us outside! That’s that! Now for fuck's sake, just drop it!” I screamed at her, and she jumped startled by my outburst. Her lower lip trembled before she turned around on her pallet and laid down. No doubt she was over there crying. I had been becoming short-tempered with the little girl. I didn’t blame her though I was going just as crazy as she was. I hobbled over to where she was laying down. The last party Ruby invited me to must have torn something in my knee because since then, I’d not been able to walk on it without pain shooting through my body. I knelt behind Angel and pulled her into my embrace, the stubborn girl going stiff in my arms. Her form of rebellion.
“Hey, I’m sorry, I yelled. I know you want to go out, and I do too, but there’s nothing I can do to get us outside, and it makes me feel bad, do you understand?” I said, my voice as calm as I could make it.
She turned her head to look at me. “Why are you so mean, Inkpop?”
The silly nickname she had chosen for me, making me smile. “I’m sorry, Angel, I may get angry but never at you, just the situation.” I rubbed her dirty, curly hair, pushing it out of her face.
“Okay, I understand.” She smiled and turned around to give me a big hug. I hugged her back and had to stop myself from getting more upset. She was nothing but skin and bones. I could feel each of her ribs, and her collarbones had already begun protruding sickly through the thin covering of skin. We wouldn’t survive much longer like this.
The latch to the door unlocked, and two armed men stood there.
“Dumbass, Mrs. Giles wants you.”
I turned my head to the guards and glared at them, “What for?”
One of them chuckled before walking further into the room, “What do you think?” He grabbed me by the arm and tore me away from Angel.
“No, leave him alone.” Angel jumped up from the bed, and I could see she was getting ready to swing at the man dragging me away.
“It’s okay little one; we will bring him back.” The second guard stepped in and diverted her attention. Angel stormed back over to the pallet before she fell down and started to cry.
I looked over to the guard who’d stopped Angel from making a huge mistake and could see he was upset. Although he was one of our guards, he wasn’t as cruel as the rest. I knew he wouldn’t set us free, but maybe I could get him to help Angel, he seemed to have a soft spot for her.
He grabbed me by my other arm, and they toted me to Ruby Giles party room. I heard the screams long before I made it to the room.
“She’s in rare form tonight.” The asshole guard confessed.
I chanced a glance over to the other guard, and he did nothing but look away. I took in a deep breath and tried to set my resolve for what was to come. My dignity was long gone when it came to surviving Ruby, crying, pleading, begging, passing out, even defecating did nothing to deter her, and in the short time I’d been her captive, I had done it all.
The doors opened, and the first thing I could see was a woman hanging from the ceiling, hooks going through her arms and legs to keep her suspended. Ruby grabbed the chain connected to the woman and used it to spin her around.
“Ahh! Please!” The woman screamed as the hooks pulled tighter into her body, and a shower of blood fell from her. Ruby danced around in it, skipping happily and jumping in the small puddles of blood that were raining from the ceiling.
“Oh, if it isn’t Nico. I’ve been waiting for you to come.” She said, using my given name. I walked further in the room, taking in the state of everything around me. There were several other women and men, none of which looked like they were in too bad a shape. “I have been entertaining a few of my
