sack; in the sack were four handguns. He pulled out two revolvers from the sack, turned around, and handed them to Alex and Chris in the back seat. He handed a semiautomatic pistol to Edwardo, and the other semi he tucked under his shirt behind him.

“You guys wait here while I go speak to the receptionist to make arrangements for the day. You should know that we will be paying the receptionist slightly more money than we did yesterday, because we’ll change rooms a few times today. The receptionist is going to want more for this. There’s also the fact that we’ve hired more muscle. These are all costs we can live with though. Our safety is worth it, do we all agree?” Raphael said.

“Absolutely! Alex, Chris, you guys have a problem with this?” Eddie asked.

“Nah man, I’m good. Alex?” Chris asked.

“Yeah, I’m good too. No complaints from me, man,” replied Alex.

“Good, I’m glad that we are all on the same page. I’ll be back in a couple of minutes, and we can unload the tubes,” said Raphael.

Raphael spoke to the receptionist and made the arrangements. The receptionist promised to keep an eye on the surveillance cameras and inform Raphael of any suspicious activity. The receptionist also left four rooms empty, situated in strategic parts of the motel. This was ideal, because now the hookers wouldn’t know which room the guys were in. More girls were hanging around, having gotten word that cocaine was available.

They unloaded the ice-cream truck, and everyone carried the tubes up the stairs to the second floor. Edwardo unscrewed the vent in the bathroom as planned and put one of the tubes in to make sure it fit. He connected all the tubes together.

The final piece was a corner piece with a bend in it. This was the part that would stick out of the wall on the inside to allow them to drop the baggies in.

Raphael gave the signal to one of the security guys outside the door, who walked to the part of the second floor where he could be seen by the look-out near the small parking lot. Shortly after the signal had been given, a signal was sent back by the lookout: six fingers up and then two fingers after that. This meant six twenty-dollar baggies, amounting to $120. This would be delivered to the room by the lookout. Transactions like this continued until around 2:30p.m. before sales started to slow down. They had almost run out of product at this point.

Then Eddie noticed that all the hookers had disappeared. He could see someone taking out the trash from other rooms on the same floor. The man doing this didn’t seem like your average cleaner, because he was well dressed, with nicely groomed hair, so Eddie asked Raphael if it was worth checking the guy out. Raphael approached the receptionist to find out more about the guy and how long the man had been working at the motel. It turned out that the cleaner had been working there for years and he had always dressed the same way. Eddie calmed down when Raphael brought the news back, and everyone carried on as they had been.

By 5p.m. the drugs were all gone, and Raphael split up the profit with the boys after deducting the fee for the motel receptionist and security. The boys still had the two bricks of heroin and a brick of cocaine in their backpacks. Eddie went to the bathroom to replace the air vent. He retracted and dismantled the tubes, and everyone helped him carry them back to the van. Before driving off, Raphael placed a call to his contact. Speaking in code, he told his contact to meet them at a nearby parking lot in fifteen minutes. The parking lot was three minutes from where Raphael and his team were. He told the security guys as well as Eddie and his guys to be on high alert, saying that this was not your average drug deal. They had around three kilograms of product, and he knew too well things could easily go wrong.

The plan was for Raphael and his team to arrive at the meeting point early to check out the location. However, just as they were about to pull out of the parking lot of the motel, three SUVs pulled up in front of the car belonging to Raphael’s security team, with Raphael’s ice-cream van behind them. The security team’s driver had a submachine gun in his lap, so he reached for it and as armed men stepped out of the SUVs, he started shooting. The driver hit the first and second guy from the first SUV, and then the other three guys pointed their weapons out the windows and started shooting at the other two SUVs. Raphael didn’t have a good view of what was going on and neither did the boys. Raphael hollered at the boys to have their weapons ready. Eddie didn’t appear to be shaken by all the shooting. Alex and Chris looked shocked but maintained their composure, guns ready.

After ten seconds of gunfire between the two crews, the shooting stopped. Raphael reversed the ice-cream truck to get a better view of the other vehicles. As he reversed, he could see dead bodies—the men from two of the SUVs on the ground, and the drivers had also been shot dead. The third SUV had fled the scene. Raphael stepped out of the ice-cream truck. Still clutching his pistol, he ran over to the car belonging to his security team. The front of the car was covered with bullets holes and had started to catch fire. All but one of the guys had died in the shooting. The only guy remaining was still ducking behind the front passenger side of the car, grazed from a bullet. Raphael helped him up and told him the car was about to blow up and
