his legs out from under him. “My goddess, have I not given enough? Where am I to go? For what purpose?”

Solaris took his face in her hands. “There are those who cannot become what they must be with you so near. Others who could use such strength in their darkened hours of need. We have heard their prayers and are sending you to help them.”

Kain mulled the words in his mind. Realization overtook him as to who she meant and what she wanted him to do. He bowed to her in respect. “Yes. I am a soldier, I will go where I am ordered to march.”

The goddess’ face became stern, her voice demanding. “Go, Alexander Kain. Your body has been repaired, your soul will find its place. Be with your lover and wait for the dream I will send you.”

Chapter Twenty-Eight

Three Days Later

Another drop of rain from the canopy of the forest dropped on Kain’s face waking him. The wind felt cool on his skin, causing him to shiver from its gentle kiss. His muscles stitched, his joints popped from the stiffness as he tried to rise.

All around he could hear the soft songs of the woods. The smell of fresh grass and lush green of the forest wafted in his nostrils. He took a deep breath with a smile on his face as he picked up her scent.

He looked around until his blurring vision fell upon the eyes of his lover. Unable to contain his excitement, Kain embraced her thick neck, not caring he had no clothing on. His hands tangled in the strands of deep red fur, caressing its softness.

She returned his affection with gleeful whimpers and licking the side of his face before shifting back and embracing him. Her lips placed tender kisses down the length of his neck to his shoulder, returning to his mouth, tasting him.

Kain broke their kiss when his eyes fell upon his arms to find there were no scars. Confused, Kain let his eyes drift over his bare chest. The crest of his family still adorned his hip but the angry scars once present on his chest and stomach were nowhere to be seen. He felt as though he’d never experienced the curse, his strength full yet foreign to him since he’d been so weak for so long.

For the moment, he relished feeling the strength of his youth over five-hundred years ago. He wanted nothing more than to stay with Tala in the forest.

He found a hollow to serve as a den where they could stay until Solaris called him to leave. It made Kain feel good to once again rely on his survival skills and relish the quiet of the forest.

Tala brought him a backpack full of clothes after Luna appeared to her in a dream to show her where she needed to go to find Kain. It included his favorite Sherpa jacket, a new pair of distressed blue jeans, and the metal necklace Desdemona gave him.

It reminded him he needed to go see the vampiress before he left so he could find the resting place of his father and hopefully learn more about how Pentacost got there.

I guess staying in the forest for the whole week is out of the question. Kain sighed. He served dinner for them and retired to the hollow where Kain spent most of the night making love to his mate, strengthening their bond.

During 0ne of the sessions, Tala asked Kain if he was feeling okay. With a melancholy smile as his only answer, Kain kissed his mate’s mouth like she was his only connection to the living world. He let his hands run over her breasts, her belly and sides, returning to splay across her lower belly where he planted a gentle kiss.

Kain rubbed the small mound his mate developed while he was away. “I ask you to come with me tomorrow. I’d like you to meet someone.”

Tala ran her hand through Kain’s hair, inquiring who he meant.

A sigh escaped Kain, his eyes drawn down to almost closing. “My father. Desdemona brought his remains here to the States and has promised to show me where he’s buried.”

The following morning, Kain phoned Zane to see if the vampire would mind bringing him his car. Zane greeted his friend, elated and confused how he’d returned.

Kain refused to answer and once again requested his car.

When asked by Zane why Kain hadn’t called Damien or Gabriel, Kain informed him he’d contact them when the time was right. He wanted to be with Tala and take care of some things before having to leave.

Zane’s voice on the other side of the phone stayed silent briefly before he seemed to understand what Kain meant. Zane would bring Kain’s car to the Woods Edge. Kain thanked him and hung up the phone. He packed the backpack with the clothes Tala brought him, his phone and what little breakfast remained, which he gave to Tala.

Through their hike to the Woods Edge, Kain supported Tala when she began to get winded, letting her sit to rest when she needed.

Guilt weighed heavy on his heart at keeping the fact he needed to leave from Damien and Gabriel. They’d be angry and possibly hurt not knowing but Kain wanted to be with Tala and enjoy some time away from pack pressure. He knew Damien would either plead with him to stay as beta or probe him to find out where Kain was going.

As promised, Kain’s car waited at the Woods Edge, its engine running and Zane leaning against the pure black finish.

Kain laughed, reaching out to take Zane’s paw and shaking it firmly. “You must tell me how you manage this one day. First Anthony’s coven, now here.”

Zane giggled, returning Kain’s handshake and pulling him into a bro hug. “Semper Fi, my friend. Were you ever a Marine, you’d be a damned good one. I wouldn’t want anyone else watching my back.”

The two veterans smacked each other on the
