“How did you stop Rose from coming with you?” Lucian asked.
“I tied her to the bed,” Cayden grumbled. “It was the only way I could get her to stay put. She is going to be pissed with me.”
Lucian hid his smirk from Katherine.
“I’m sure you will find some way to make it up to her.”
A growl sounded down the line and Lucian chuckled. He knew the wolf was extraordinarily possessive of his mate and would be riled by the suggestion, but he found he enjoyed poking the testosterone-fueled male too much to resist.
“She’s pissed with you too,” he growled.
“Oh? What have I done? You’re the one who tied her to the bed and then left her there,” Lucian said, winking at Katherine as she stared opened mouthed at him.
“You upset her new friend,” Cayden explained, “she says you’ve got some serious making up to do or she will, and I quote; ‘tear a chunk out of your suited and booted ass.’”
Lucian smiled warmly at that. He had no doubt the Luna would make good on that threat if given the opportunity, and he was almost tempted to let her just so Katherine would see how fiercely others would cherish and protect her. But he already fully intended on spending the rest of his life making up for the way he had treated his darling.
“Please offer Rose my apologies and assure her that I have made it my life’s ambition to make up for the hurt I have caused to my true love.”
Cayden grumbled something under his breath that sounded suspiciously like ‘I told you so’.
“Good. Fine. Can I go back to bed now? Or do you need my help getting rid of any unwanted guests? Rose said Katherine’s father was heading up your way with a journalist.”
“It’s all taken care of, but thank you Cayden for coming to my aide,” Lucian paused for a moment before shoving aside his hesitation, “you are a good friend.”
An awkward silence hung on the line between them.
Lucian cleared his throat as Katherine beamed at him from across the kitchen counter.
“Now, get back home and untie your mate. Or don’t, that’s your call.”
Another low growl rumbled down the phone and Lucian laughed loudly in response.
“I’ll see you at the mating ceremony,” came the wolf’s testy response.
“You most certainly will, Goodnight, Cayden,” Lucian ended the call and opened his arms for Katherine to snuggle in once more.
Nothing had ever felt more right than having her with him. He had meant what he had said to the wolf. He would spend the rest of their lives together, showing Katherine just how much he loved and adored her. Starting with placing her on his throne in the grand hall and worshipping her like the queen she was.
She tilted her head up again from where she was nestled in tightly against his chest. Her golden-brown eyes twinkling with mischief.
“So,”
“So?”
“We’re going to a wedding.”
“We are.”
“Would’ve been nice if you had actually asked me, rather than just sending an RSVP on my behalf,” Katherine said, her eyes taking on a familiar challenging glint.
“Yes, I suppose that would’ve been nice,” Lucian replied before dipping his head and whispering against the shell of her ear, “but you don’t really want me to be ‘nice’, do you?”
Katherine’s throat worked as she swallowed hard. She softly nodded her head.
Lucian hummed quietly in consideration.
“I’ll tell you what, I’ll make you a deal: I’ll show you just how wicked I can be, and then you can tell me again if ‘nice’ is what you really want.”
Her pulse quickened and her lips parted on a warm breath as a slight tremble rolled through her body.
“It’s a deal,” Katherine husked, lifting her chin in silent challenge, her eyes dark and hungry for their next delicious fight in the never-ending, intoxicating battle of wills.
Lucian felt his lips lift at the corner of his mouth in a wicked grin.
Let battle commence.
Acknowledgement
Thank you for reading Escaping The Beast, the second in my Darkhills series. I hope you enjoyed Katherine and Lucian's story as much as I enjoyed writing it.
Writing and publishing these stories is a dream come true for me, and I couldn't do it with out the support of some very special people.
So I'd like to thank my long suffering husband, who puts up with all kinds of nonsense from me and does so with a smile. My children for being my playmates when I just can't look at a screen for a moment longer, my family and friends who have been kind enough to encourage and support me throughout. I also couldn't have done this without the help of my beta readers and sense checkers. Shout out to Michelle for lending me her keen eyes and expertise.
Last but not least, my wonderful readers! Your kind words and reviews are like a warm hug- Thank you x
About The Author
Elizabeth Greene
Elizabeth Greene is an avid reader and writer of paranormal romance. She loves action and adventure, feisty heroines and hot as hell heroes that leave you tingling in all the right places.
She enjoys writing the stories that come to her when her mind wanders, which is often. All her stories are unapologetically fantastical and more often than not, feature mythical creatures: shifters, vampires, demons, elves and whatever else takes her fancy.
The Darkhills Romance Series is a collection of standalone, paranormal romance fiction that are cliff hanger free. While the series can be read in any order, readers are encouraged to start at the beginning as there are a few characters that feature throughout the series. (What can she say? - Some characters just get under her skin and are just too interesting to restrict to just the one story.)
All her stories come with a happily ever after guarantee.
