“I know how lonely it can be,” Jack said.
Bailey didn’t even try to hide her smirk. “How do you fucking know? You’re just some monkey who still has a mother and a best friend.”
Jack knelt in front of the demon. “I watched my dad, with his partner, with his police buddies, and they were family. I wanted that. I didn’t get it. I became a fucking security guard, and whenever I did see a Plum Creek cop, they knew me, and they knew I’d never be a policeman ever again. I know what it’s like to be exiled. But you and I are going to give Gabby a family. We’re going to be her friends, her lovers, her legion.”
Bailey couldn’t hold his gaze. She pinched the cherry off the cigarette without wincing. “What about sweet fucking Annie? Aren’t you and her going to play house together? Man and wife, monogamy and maggots?” It looked like it hurt for Bailey to ask him about his future with Annie.
“I don’t know, Bailey. First, we’ll save Annie, then we’ll see what happens. And for what it’s worth, they’re called babies, not maggots.”
“Same diff.” Bailey stood and drew him up for a kiss.
She tasted like cigarettes and cinnamon schnapps. Not a bad combination.
He finally got the demon back to sleep by having her lay her head on his lap while she stretched out on the sofa. He caressed her hair until she was completely relaxed. A second later, she was sleeping. He watched her face. She could be so expressive, but now she was resting. He did have to wonder what might happen with Annie after all this was over. In the end, he couldn’t imagine a nice Plum Creek girl like her would ever join him, living in partial sin with supernatural creatures and doing questionable things to make a living.
And how could Annie live a normal life knowing there might be some unseen monster chewing on her or the people she loved?
The true answer? Annie’s life would never be normal again. Unless...
Jack had a plan that might set things right for Annie as long as they all survived the coming fight.
Jack had finally fallen asleep when Gabby woke him up. She touched his face, and it was a lovely way of coming awake. He smelled her, so he knew it was okay.
It was nearly noon outside. The bright sun filled the window.
The angel had showered, her hair was damp, and she had a soft smile on her face. “I know Bailey was worried about me last night. I know she thinks I’m risking everything, and I am. I know what I’m doing. I know when I am on the righteous path.”
Bailey answered without opening her eyes. “I hope you’re not full of shit, Feathers. Even if you are, I’ll be here for you.”
Jack nodded and smiled at the angel. Who smiled back. They had still at least six hours until they had to go to hell. He knew exactly how he wanted to fill the time. He pulled in the angel for a kiss, which led to more.
Chapter Thirty-Three
FRIDAY NIGHT, SIX O’CLOCK, they drove to the parking lot behind the bank. Jack didn’t feel like walking, and besides, the hell keys weren’t small. The parking lot was fairly empty since Friday wasn’t a busy time for either the gym or the Big Boy Café. Even the King Soopers didn’t have much traffic.
On the way over, Bailey had gone into great detail about their encounter with Wanda in the gym’s locker room.
Gabby had turned quizzical. “So Wanda was interested in sex even though she was pulled out of the timestream? Wasn’t she...shy?”
Jack laughed. “Not shy at all.”
Bailey explained, “No, for her, it was this intensely sexual situation. I’m glad I’m hot, and Jack has a big dick. That made the seduction way easier.”
They parked and walked to the back of the bank, another dead space, otherwise known as a thin space. But this one was close to where Kerrata had kidnapped Annie.
Jack stopped time, but things were already so quiet in the dead space it wasn’t dramatically noticeable. Except for the lack of wind and the silence, since all traffic on Plum Creek Boulevard had been stopped.
Jack wore the Eternity Cannon in a holster strapped to his thigh. He’d bought leather compartments for the two extra cylinders and he attached them to his belt. He had eighteen magical rounds. He brought his Beretta in his shoulder holster, with two extra magazines. Lastly, he’d carry his shotgun with a bandolier of shotgun shells.
Gabby wore her white business suit, no heels, but then her cute feet were tough as nails.
Bailey wore the slutty red dress, and she’d found thick chains for the two hell keys. She carried the skull key in her fist. The crossbones key hung over a shoulder. The demon let out a nervous breath. “Okay, it’s not like we’re going to wind up right at the duke’s palace. We’ll be close, maybe a half-mile away. I’m pretty sure we’ll appear at the D’Nyr Gate, and it should be a straight shot from there. We can set up our ambush outside Tanichron’s gate. Then we wait. Kerrata won’t be there alone. He’ll have other Interim with him, I’m pretty sure. Fucking Fugs.”
“Don’t need to curse,” Gabby
