If she missed this chance, who knows when she would get another opportunity. She was excited. She was completely exhausted by the time rays of light started shining through the window, and she realized that she never slept a wink. However, she was very proud of herself. She had a plan now, and she also found the perfect person who would make an ideal first employee or even a partner of her company. Diaz couldn’t wait!
Chapter 3: Visitor from the Past
“So, does that mean she doesn’t want anything to do with David?” asked Sanjay, biting into his burrito.
Sanjay and Diaz had run into each other when buying dinner at a cantina and decided to catch up. Diaz had told him Aria’s decision to sue. “Looks like it. I don’t know what happened, but I’m glad because she is doing the right thing!” Diaz grinned and took a big gulp of her beer. “Didn’t she tell you anything that day?” Sanjay shook his head.
Aria had been quiet throughout the ride, and Sanjay didn’t probe her. She had seemed deep in thought. He would have given anything to know what was going on in her head, but he wanted to respect her personal space. He understood it must have been a tough situation for her. He couldn’t even imagine. When the time was right, she might confide in them, but for now, it was best to give her room to breathe and get adjusted to her life again.
“I didn’t think it was my place to ask. She will tell us if she wants to. Even if she doesn’t that’s her decision, but I am glad she seems to be ready to move on. Filing this case is a major step forward for her,” Sanjay looked at his burrito thoughtfully. “She told me she liked that apartment she looked at…”
“Oh yeah! I think Tanya mentioned that she is thinking about getting it, but I think she is a bit worried about affording it.”
“She could take her old job back. They are offering her the same position she had. But I guess I understand why she wouldn’t want to go back.”
“Yeah, that is understandable! But I think I have a solution for her…”
“What?”
“You will soon find out, but I have to talk to her first. Which reminds me,” Diaz checked her watch, “I’m gonna be late. I told Aria I would drop by tonight.” She drank the rest of her beer in one go and gave Sanjay a wave as she left cash on the table for her bill. “Gotta run. I will call you later, okay?”
She raced to her car and sent Aria a text that she was on her way. They had a lot to discuss. Diaz wanted to explain the entire procedure of the lawsuit they were about to file and make sure Aria understood every step, and there was another thing she wanted to talk to her about. Within a few minutes, she was outside Aria’s house. They exchanged pleasantries while Aria made coffee, and they settled down.
“Okay,” Diaz stated, “Before we start talking about the lawsuit, I wanted to talk to you about something else. I had this idea, and I wanted to run it past you.”
“Sure! What is it?”
“You know I have been meaning to start my own practice for a long time. I always prefer to pick my clients after talking to them, looking at the case, and other factors. The only way I could do that is by doing my own thing. No law firm would let me pick my own clients and refuse the ones I don’t want to work for. So…” Diaz smiled, “I have decided this is the right time to finally start!”
“OMG! That’s awesome, Nicole,” Aria hugged her lawyer, who was more of a friend now. “This is great, seriously. I know you it will work out for you.”
“Yeah, I am already getting a lot of calls from potential clients, you know… after your case,” Diaz looked apologetically at Aria, who just smiled and dismissed it with a wave. “That’s why I figured, it is now or never.”
“I am honestly really glad you are doing this!”
“Thank you! Of course, I will need to hire a few people since I can’t really do everything on my own. So, I have done some thinking and I was wondering if you would want to join me?”
Aria blinked, “What do you mean?”
“I mean work with me. I know you are ready to move on and I can’t think of any other better person to join my practice than you.”
“Nicole!” Aria smiled warmly, “I am flattered! But I know nothing about law.”
“I am not asking you to join as a lawyer,” Diaz chuckled, “Just like you know nothing about law, I know nothing about finance. I want someone I can trust. I actually want you to join me as my partner in the company, not just an employee.”
“What! This is honestly very flattering! I… I don’t know if I would be able to… I mean I don’t think I am the right person…” Aria started but Diaz interrupted.
“You are the perfect person for the job. Don’t be ridiculous.”
Aria stayed
