āThis is serious!ā I said fiercely, trying to focus on what Iād come for.
āI should say it is,ā he agreed. āI canāt keep my hands off of youāI canāt keep my mind on trackāthatās more than serious!ā He bent down and kissed me again, until I could feel it in my toes. āMadame Rahadzi, Iām going to have a very hard time returning you to your husband. Why donāt we lock the door and pretend you arenāt married?ā he said.
I took a deep breath and held him away as he reached for me again.
āI must get to those phones and call Tavish,ā I managed to get out. āIāve figured out what Lawrence is up toābut now I have to prove it.ā
āYou mean, something more than what we already know?ā said Tor, his eyes lightening.
āI think heās their banker,ā I told him. āWhere else did they get all that moneyāhundreds of millions of dollarsāto buy up those loans? I think heās done some creative financing in these last few weeks.ā
āWithout passing through the loan department for approvals?ā he suggested.
āHeās the head of bank-wide data processing. If we could get into the system and grab that dough, why couldnāt he?āheād only need it for the short termāā
āEspecially if he cut a few corners, like refusing to pay us,ā agreed Tor. āI think youāre onto something. The only phones for international calls are right there in that room. Stay here. Iāll get Lelia to wrap things up quickly, drag them off, and show them a bit of the island or something. Never fearāIāll get you in there.ā
āCouldnāt you have found a more reasonable hour to phone?ā Tavish moaned, his voice gravelly with sleep. āHave you any idea what time it is here?ā
āThis is an emergency,ā I told him. āGet up, dunk your head in ice water, make a pot of coffeeāanything. I want you to get on-line to the bank in San Francisco and hit every file till you find what Iām looking for.ā
āWhat are you looking for?ā he asked.
āMoney. Lots and lots of money. About four hundred million dollars in short-term, low-interest, no-penalty loans.ā
āAnybody we know?ā asked Tavish, his voice sounding considerably more cheerful.
āOnly time will tell,ā I said.
But two hours later, I was a bit less optimistic. We were still on the phone, Tor and Lelia having left a note that they were taking the Vagabonds on a lengthy walking tour of the island, and would meet me for cocktails at the castle.
I was lying on the floor of the boardroom, the World War II telephone sitting on my chest, the receiver propped on the floor near my ear as Tavish and I pounded through our paces.
āIāve tried every bloody loan in the system thatās short-term and has low rates,ā he informed me. āI even checked those loans for automobile flooring, recreational vehicles, small boats, and student education! Iām afraidārumors to the contraryāthat there are no four-year-college degrees that cost over fifty million dollars!ā
āThere has to be something out there,ā I said, cursing under my breath. āThere arenāt that many of these Vagabonds. How many men would they trust in a deal this confidentialātwenty-fiveāfiftyāa hundred max? And these guys are all CEOs of major corporationsānot idle heirs to a dimestore fortune. They may be well paid, but not that well. They donāt have that kind of cash lying around their checking accounts. They got it from someoneāand that someone was Lawrence. Why else was he so frantic to keep me and the auditors off that system?ā
āTerrific theoryāIām in total awe,ā said Tavish. āBut Iāve rather exhausted my supply of rocks under which to look. Any new ideasāso long as weāre footing the global bill for satellite communications?ā
āTry the password file,ā I said. āWhatever Lawrence did, he must have done under his own password.ā
āYou canāt be serious,ā said Tavish. āThere are fifty thousand IDs out there. He might have used anythingāor two or three, or a dozenāor a hundred!ā
āTry Lawrence,ā I suggested.
āBeg pardon?ā
āLawrence!ā I repeated. āL-a-w-r-e-n-c-e. Or Larryāsomething like that.ā
āDonāt be absurd,ā said Tavish with disdain. āNo one would use his own name as a passwordālike a birth date or motherās maiden nameāitās the very first thing a thief would think of trying.ā
āWe have nothing to lose at this point,ā I said. āHumor meāgive it a shot.ā
Tavish went off mumbling, but a few moments later, I heard exclamationsāthen a shriek.
āThere is a password of Lawrence!ā he cried. āBy God, this is the bloodiest, ugliest, most criminal thing Iāve ever witnessed in my life!ā
āWhat is it?ā I cried, sitting up and clutching the phone to my ear.
āIāll print it all off on Charles Babbage so weāll have the hard copy later,ā he said, āsince I canāt print on your line. But Iāll read the basics off to you. I hope youāve got a quill handy.ā
āWhat is it?ā I repeated, clutching the pen and pad in my hands.
āItās stocks, duckyāthree hundred million in bank stockāall of it transferred in the last two weeks.ā
āBank stock? You mean, shares in the Bank of the World?ā
āBelieve me, I havenāt a clue where it came from,ā said Tavish, ābut I can quote you name, rank, and serial number for mucho millions of shares.ā
Perhaps Tavish didnāt know where it had come fromābut I did. And I smiled. It wasnāt too hard to figure out where there was a block of bank stock that size, and one that was really handy. In fact, it could be transferred without ever leaving the bankās computer system.
Theyād ripped off the bankās own employee pension fund!
It was late afternoonānearly eveningāwhen I cut through the woods and dropped down below the castle to enter from the small peninsula beneath. From there, cobwebbed internal stairwells led directly to the observation tower overlooking the parapet and the seaāwithout passing through the courtyard, where I might be seen.
I knew that sound traveled
