GETTING TO KNOW
THE PIANO/PORTABLE
KEYBOARD
The keyboard is made up of seven letters of the alphabet: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. The piano or portable keyboard is made up of black and white keys. As you move up and down the keyboard, from left to right, you will see that the black keys on the piano or portable keyboard are recognized as either sharps (#) or flats (b). As you go up for example C, C#, D. Look at the diagram on page 4, look at the note C; notice the next note is C# which is a black key. You are going up ½ of a step. By doing the note, name changes from a C natural to a C sharp. Sharp means you go up ½ of a step. Now if you go down ½ of a step from the note C, to the note B, you will have a flat (b). The flat name would be C flat, etc.
Let’s look at the diagram above, notice we have black and white keys that have note names. Beginning from left to right from C to C you will say C, C#/Db, D, D#/Eb, E, F, F#/Gb, G, G#/Ab, A, A#/Bb, B, and back to C. It just repeats over and over again. Notice the note E, B, and F have either a flat or a sharp symbol which the key E can also be called F flat (Fb) in the Cb Major Scale, B can be called C flat (Cb) in the Gb and Cb Major Scale, and F can be called E sharp (E#) in the C# Major Scale.

Now to recognize the alphabet setting without having
letters on the piano keys is to remember that:
C is the first note of the two black keys
D is in the middle of the two black keys
E is at the end of the two black keys
F is the first note to the left of the Three black keys
G is the 2nd note of the three black keys
A is the Third note of the three black keys
B is at the end of the
Three black keys
