“What is this for? It wasn’t necessary.” I said taking kurta in my hand.
“It is my dear…. I want you to wear this for the evening puja not those funky jeans and causal outfit we are here for puja not for partying.” She said pulling my cheeks and went near the dressing table to adjust her hair.
“Okay….Your wish my command Honey …but how do you know that blue is my favorite color?” I said putting my arm around her waist from backside while she was combing her long silky hair and our images together reflected in the mirror. I smiled and kissed her on her neck
“Color? What is there that I don’t know about you my Shonaa!!! I know your food taste, your likes –dislikes, and your mood swing as well. I know so much about you that you yourself don’t know baby.” She said turning her face towards me.
I smiled and put my face towards her but was pushed back by her with reflexes.
“Hold on what were you trying to do.” She said looking directly at my face.
“To kiss you…why? Shouldn’t I?” I said pulling her back again.
“Ohh Rohit please stop! Its already late… go and get ready quickly.” She literally pushed me inside the bathroom and was about to leave.
“Why only me…come join me.” I said holding her hand.
“Ahhaahaaaa….it seems your mood is riding somewhere else today.” She pushed me back again.
“Why?? What is wrong in bathing together? Are you feeling shy to get in the bathroom with me?” I said with a cunning smile
“Not shy exactly!!!!! But you have not own me fully yet …so you see dear I am not your legally wedded wife yet. So have patience I will fulfill your this wish too but only once we are married. So as of now keep those dirty intentions out of your head and get ready quickly.” She said and pushed me back to bathroom.
Around 7:00 pm everything was ready our house looked enlighten with those diyas and colorful lights, the aroma of flowers gave a very theistic feel. I came and sat near her but was soon asked to get up and sit on the left side of her.
“Why …What’s wrong here???” I said looking at her.
She said, “Shhhhhh… come and sit on my left side.”
“Ohh God did you really made these rules....I doubt!!!! Ohhhh damn it’s so confusing why girls remember so many unnecessary things… like you should sit on the left side, like you should not wear black dresses during puja and the list of do & don’t goes on and on.” I thought and looked up but didn’t utter a single word and followed all her instructions quietly like an obedient child.
Our eyes were closed and she was murmuring something in front of Lord Ganesha and Laxmi idols. I also kept my eyes shut for a while but could not do so for much long. So I opened my eyes and first look at the idols bowed my head for their blessing and then looked on the right at her. Her head was covered with red chunni and her face was glowing in the diya light. She looked so innocent and vulnerable…. “My life revolves around this girl” I said to myself who is now sitting by my side.
“God I really thank you for bringing her in my life. I don’t want anything else but please please always keep her like the way she is…sometimes she is Mom who dictates me to follow all her not so logical instructions… Sometimes she is my best friend who motivates me instantly when I feel low and sometimes she is my sweet little child who does such funny acts that gets my heart pounding. I felt so lonely, so depressed when I came to Kolkata and many a times I thought of returning back. But once she entered my life, everything changed. In these two years she has become my family and my life. I can’t imagine to live a single day without her. Ohhh God please please never ever let her go out of my life even for a single day.” I said to myself and again looked back at her…she was still in same position and murmuring with her closed eyes… I looked at her and smile and closed my eyes again.
Few minutes later she asked to me open my eyes; she pasted the tilak on my forehead and asked me to put my right hand in front of her. She tied a Mouli on my wrist and said this will eradicate all your evil fate and will bring good health and wisdom in my life. All while my eyes were fixed on her face and soon she notice that.
“Why are you looking at me so strangely??” She said while still tying the knot.
“Nothing.” I said and smile.
“No, there is definitely something cooking in your head. Comon tell me?” She said crossing my arms while we were still sitting there.
“Okay I will, but promise you won’t laugh?” I said.
“Okay I won’t. Now speak up.”
I leaned my head on her shoulder and said “Okay so when you were busy murmuring to grant your wishes near Lord Ganesha, I was observing your face that was glowing under red chunni in the diya light and you looked like a perfect newly wedded wife.”
“Is that so??? You and your imaginations.” She said and laughed.
“Yeah Babyyy…trust me, I really felt like that way, I don’t know why.” I said crossing my fingers with her.
“In anyways, I am your wife by heart and soul and I have always treated you as my husband. It’s just the formalities that needs to be done….wait a second don’t get up." She said and went near the bed and pulled out something from the bag.
“So here it is…common put this on my forehead and the formalities will also be over?” She said opening her palm with a small box of Vermilion in it. (Vermilion a red color powder put by the Hindu women on their forehead which indicates she is now ritually married. It a tradition followed in India since ages).
“Are you Crazy??? This is only used by married women. I said, awestruck by her prompt demand.
“Yeah, so what’s wrong? I am your wife by heart and soul and let’s confirm this today in this auspicious day of Diwali in front of Almighty as well. I also want to see how I would look if I am actually married.” She said and forwarded me the vermilion box.
“Are you sure you want to do this?” I asked her.
“Why are you so scared?? No one is going to put you in jail. I am adult now and I only have the authority to decide whom I want to marry. Comon do this now.” She dictated putting forward her palm.
“But Sakshi…” I wanted to say something but was interrupted by her.
“What??? Do you still have doubts? That means you are not sure you will be marrying me or not. Okay let it be.” She said pulling her hand back.
“Ohhh Sakshi it’s nothing like that. I have already accepted you as my wife way back.” I said holding her hand.
“Then??? Why are you so scared? You just said na you want to see me in bridal look. Comon do it.” She insisted again.
“Okay… give me then.” I said and took a pinch of vermilion in my finger and placed it on her forehead. She smiled and touched my feet. “Hey hey… wait what are you doing?” I said pulling my feet back.
“Now I am really your wife.” She smiled and hugged me and I raised her face a little higher and planted a peck on her forehead.
“When you are there with me I have no qualms about anything in my life. Please don’t ever leave me.” I said holding her in my arms.
“Stop rubbish. How can you even think that I will leave you? Even if you want I won’t let you go; now you are trapped forever. You see… now I am your wife actually.” She said and leaned on my chest.
“One thing Sakshi, it is said that once vermilion is put on women’s head it should never be removed till her husband is alive. What will you say if your Mom catches?”
“Ohh it’s not a problem, leave that to me… just wait I will show you the magic.” She said adjusting her front hair so skillfully that the vermilion which was looking like a small dot got disguised in her hair.
“Can you spot it in my head anymore???” She said looking at me.
“Nope!!!! You are very clever I must say.” I replied smiling.
“So you see problem solved now no one knows except you me & God, happy now??” She said and hugged me back.
But still you need to careful. I don’t want you to get into trouble because of this. Neither want to shock your family who are still unaware of our relationship.
“Don’t worry I will be careful my dear hubby.” She said pulling my cheeks.
We got up and went upstairs to Kaki Ma’s room after that to get her blessing. We all together enjoyed fire crackling on the terrace and had our dinner with Kaki Ma’s family and around 9:00 pm I dropped her back to home.
Everything was going perfect but as it is said life is not a journey of smooth rides you will have your share of bumps and potholes too. A month later during one of my Sunday visit I found her Dad sleeping in his room. Sakshi later on revealed me the news that her Dad has been forced to take voluntary retirement because of his intolerable drinking habits and erratic behavior. He now stays at home all the time and has become very abusive with his behavior, he has become psychic He keeps on bugging me every time and keeps check on my college friends who have now avoided visiting my home.
He has literally made our life hell. He keeps shouting and fighting with Mom and us. I knew about her Dad’s drinking habit but had no idea that he was alcoholic to this extent. I felt very much uneasy and in awkward situation after hearing all these things. I was helpless on how to react on this. I don’t know why but I felt like leaving the place immediately. Though I had the lunch on her insists but soon left after that and then went straight to Sanjeev’s house. I gave him the news about Sakshi’s Dad. But to my surprise he knew everything about this since long. Sanjeev told me about Uncle’s bad temper and how he has become very abusive in these last few days. I felt bad and equally thought how come Sakshi never shared this with me.
But soon understood what she might be going through, because there was similarity between her and my family life. In the both the case Dad “the head of the family” had made life miserable for other family members.
Since childhood we had seen so much of misery and all the credit goes to our so called great Dad. We had family business of wholesale medicines supplies which was started by my Grandfather and was running successfully. It was one of its own kinds in Silchar and enjoyed monopoly, reaping huge profit; we lived lavishly during his tenure. My
