Now, in the small motel room they had rented, Enki stood beside her and gazed out the window. The creator of humankind, she thought wryly.
“You will see your people today.” She said finally, her gaze never leaving the window. “Be prepared.”
“And so should you, Aya. Your human form will draw attention to you.”
Aya did not comment of the young and masculine appearance of Enki. Enki was a god of male fertility, and his sculpted appearance shone like a beacon to attract females. Aya turned back to her husband, although Samas was likened to the god Apollo, who was revered as young and handsome, Samas was to the Sumerian people a god of truth, and thus his human form reflected his knowledge.
His face was a healthy bronze, much like all the Sumerian gods, his hair was a tinted white, not his natural blonde. It was only his skin and muscles that lacked noticeable definition. Where his skin had been unblemished with wrinkles, they now surrounded his eyes and forehead, his muscles, though strong enough to hold him gracefully, were only slightly defined. His short-cropped beard now covered the bottom half of his face.
He rolled as she watched. His bare back grew taught as he rolled to his side. His hand fumbled with the heavy sheets of the cold motel.
Aya noted that they would have to buy themselves thicker clothes when they could. Anu had given them money, replicas of the American currency.
“Nasaru, Sarrum, Narum,” he called out, eyes still closed. He waited a moment, before his eyes opened into the morning sunlight. Panic was the only thing she could find in there.
She crossed the room to her husband and clasped his hand within her own. He relaxed as she filled his vision, eyes softening. “It is alright, my dear husband, we are safe. Bunene is caring for the sun and your lions.”
Aya herself missed the cats, whose fur she was wash and brush each night until it was smooth and silk. Who lay at the foot of their bed each night and purred in exhaustion.
“Aya,” he murmured. “This human form worries me. It does not comprehend as fast as I truly do.”
Aya understood, but only to an extent, she was a goddess whose only requirement was to be beautiful and dance before the sun. In her human form, she was slow at processing her knowledge but at least her form was of a young woman, in her prime.
Samas coughed, waking Ninurta, and laid back on the bed. His eyes closed. “I think it shall take me some time to become accustomed. You shall have to wait before we explore these new bodies together.”
Aya laughed. “And you shall rest. The weather is too cold for you, Enki and I will find more suitable attire.” She grinned over her shoulder at her husband before dropping the sheet that was wrapped around her.
Her skin, though less luminous, was a more golden colour in her mortal form, and her skin more textured. But she overall had maintained a similar lithe form.
Samas laughed before remembering that they were not alone in the room. “Aya, you should not entice my brothers like you do. Dress quickly and in doing so return sooner to me.”
She blew her husband a kiss before picking up her dirty toga and dressing herself.
“Brother?!” Enki laughed. “I am your grandfather and Ninurta is your uncle. Have you not been taught to speak with more respect? I see what riding your chariot has done to your manners.”
Samas groaned in defeat. “I suppose I should also call you my step-uncle. Hasn’t my sister married your son?”
“And which son would that be?” With that, the room erupted into laughter. They had arrived unharmed, speaking for the first time in millennia to one another.
“Enki, are you ready now?”
Enki glanced up, his green eyes piercing and intense. His short brown hair appeared perfectly groomed and he had already dressed in his toga. “Yes, Aya, we shall go now.” And he held out his hand to her, showing her the crisp green paper within.
She let him lead her out of the room.
“Wait.” She touched his arm. “What shall your name be? Mine is Maya.”
Enki gave her a winning smile, all teeth. “Enrique.”
