he walked to the child, put his hands into his pocket and gave the child the packet of biscuit. He watched as the child tore open the biscuit and began to chew it with relish. “Merry Christmas” the boy said. It was not up to two seconds when he gasped. He had experienced something unfathomable. All of a sudden as one whose senses were turned on or whose senses suddenly became aware of something happening in his surroundings. He felt the festivity. His heart leaped happily. It was as if a case had been removed from him. He began to smile.

Then he felt it. Slowly it came but he knew it, even if he had not felt it before he knew what it was. Slowly it blew on him, passing gently through his hair and over his body. The breeze had extra-ordinary abilities; that he knew. His life was a mess, but he knew that the content of this breeze would refresh it. He knew that if he accepted, the spirit of Christmas that flows around would change him. He badly needed a refreshment of his internal self. His hair was standing and his skin pores were closed to insulate his body and keep out the cold, but this cold was different he needed it. At that moment he opened his mind, his soul and his heart. He opened his mouth and inhaled the air through his nose and mouth. He felt the air flow co-coordinately through his nasal and oral cavity and then merge in his wind pipe and flow down branching to several parts of the body. If he had spiritual eyes he would have seen that the same was happening to his soul and mind. Slowly as it had come the wind passed living behind a changed creature. The boy’s eyes were closed and his lips were trembling. Since his birth, he had never felt the way he was feeling now. He now knew what having peace and a sense of purpose meant. He fell backwards on the floor and laughed like he had never laughed before, a pure melodious sound of happiness. He thought he heard a silent whisper in the air, “Merry Christmas”.

“Merry Christmas to you too”, he shouted out loud and continued laughing.

Mrs. Strafford sat under an umbrella near the swimming pool. She sipped juice from the cup in her hand and looked all around her. An old woman of seventy eight, she had achieved much and was successful. All her children were also successful. She looked behind at the large grandeur mansion and at the parking lot that contained three expensive cars. She was enjoying life. Her life was a fairy tale played out in reality. She was happy, very happy but she had not felt this way in a long while. Right now a huge burden was pressing in her heart. She closed her eyes and remembered the boy from the street. Her life was so comfortable that she forgot that there were people whose lives were not. She saw the boy clearly in her mind. He was wearing torn dirty clothes and sang a song so mighty to make her feel uncomfortable. She had given him money—large money than all the notes he had ever dreamt of having; but now when her mind replayed the boy’s song, she saw how beautiful his voice was and how unfortunate he was. She had tried several times since she came back to shake away the boy from her thoughts, but it was impossible. She needed peace again and she had to get it back.

She got up and took her car keys from the table beside her. She knew where such a child would live—in the city’s dump. When she told the driver the location she was going to, he asked her the reason for heading to that direction.
“Let’s go wish someone Merry Christmas” was all she said and got into the car.
