a friend. This will only work when there is truly no one you can trust and nowhere can you call home. Then you will get what you need." She finished. Then she turned and floated into the air, quickly disappearing into the night. I woke up and was sweating. There was no doubt she was talking about us being evil. But I put that aside and went outside where Jacob was making an announcement. “Pack your things and get into the van ASAP, kids.” Was all I heard, I looked around and asked Nicole what was going on. “Oh, he said that, today was our last training practice here and we are going somewhere to develop more, then you heard the last part about getting our stuff and getting in the van.” I nodded at her and we walked back to the cabin, collected out stuff and got into the van. Everyone was there and we are waiting for Thomas and Jacob. “You would think of all people, they would be the quickest.” Gwen mumbles loud enough for us to hear. Then they both came up to the van walking with Clara, she had her stuff and looked like nothing happened. Except for the fact she had pure terror in her eyes. She must know too. Jacob and Thomas climbed and we started driving. Immediately I asked “Where are we going?” “We are going to the airport, so we can go to Las Vegas. From Annapolis that is a long trip, so we are definitely not driving all the way.” Jacob answered. “What’s in Las Vegas for us?” “Only the top training agency there is!” Thomas answered as if I should automatically know this. I began to stare out of the window and zone out.
I refocused about an hour later when I heard my name. “-McKenzie could finish.” ‘Finish what?’ I thought to Adam who I hoped was listening to them. ‘The book work on the plane so we can do the legit training when we get there.’ Ooooooh ok I thought to myself. I continued dozing off.
This time a car crashing into the van brought me back. It was a small red convertible. It came out of no where and rammed right into the side of the van Adam and Gwen were beside. It came head on and knocked the van into the guard rail. Thomas tried to speed up and eventually did. That side was left dented and everyone’s heart was racing, I think I even screamed. Suddenly a big truck carrying cars on the back, hit the same side the convertible did. But it hit with its side, immediately knocking our van onto its side and off the road. I opened my eyes, I was laying on top of Clara who was passed out and saw that Thomas and Jacob were standing outside of the van at a safe distance, watching us. I looked around and thought everyone was either dead or unconscious. I started screaming, to wake them up, to get Thomas or Jacob over here, something! I struggled to get out of my seatbelt, I smelled gasoline and I was shaking with fear. I continued to struggle when a hand came up and unlocked the seatbelt. I looked up and saw that Adam was awake and alive. Not very fast but still alive. “Thomas and Jacob aren’t going to help so we need to get everyone out of here now!” I told him trying to be calm. “Alright get everyone’s seatbelt off and we will drag them out.” He said reflecting my calmness. I then easily got Clara’s off and pushed open the door with a gust of wind. I rolled her unconscious body out and went back to get Gwen and Nicole. Adam had gotten Gwen unbuckled so I pushed her outside and we went to working on Nicole. “Wait you get them out and I will drag them to where Thomas and Jacob are.” He nodded and kept working on her seatbelt. I climbed out and tried to lift Gwen and Clara with an air bed, like I did before but it made a sound like a machine dying, and then stopped working. Great. I grabbed Clara’s arms and ran backwards as I dragged her to Thomas and Jacob. When I got to them I glared at them and ran back to the van. I saw that gasoline was dripping out, knowing the amount of time we just wasted I grabbed Adam’s arm and pulled him out. “What are you doing they are still in their!” He screamed at me. “The van is about to blow up in less then a minute.” I screamed back pointing to the drip.He grabbed my hand and ran towards to Clara’s body, which was far enough not to get hurt. About half way there the van blew up. The noise was ear-splitting; I looked back and watched the pieces flew in all directions. The flames burning a bright yellow looked like clouds as the explosions were huge. Once it blew up the force blew me and Adam forwards and to the ground. I looked up once all I heard was the remainder of the car slowly burning. I felt terrible, not because I was torn up and covered in soot, but because we just left three people to die. A tear ran down my cheek and Jacob came up behind us and whispered. “Only the strong will survive this challenge. Don‘t blame yourself it wasn‘t your fault.” He thought it was ok. That low life thought killing three minors was how the world worked. “You’re damn right it wasn’t my fault. You both just stood there and watched as three of the kids you were training and protecting blew up. They all trusted you and you left them out to die.” I yelled at him as I tried to get up. “Don’t be mad, if they couldn’t survive this they wouldn’t have survived the missions.” “Did they know they were being tested? No, they weren’t even awake to use their powers to save themselves. It’s not like the powers we have been working so hard on controlling were going to help them in the first place! What was that about, I’m glad you just proved to me that two teenagers can’t save a van full of people, without using our powers!” I stormed off into the woods, which outlined the field we were standing in, with my head down and tears flooding to my eyes.
The High Hotel and Center for Magical Training

Adam stayed with them and continued talking for some time. But I guess they wanted to leave because he came up to me. “Come on we have to keep going.” He said quietly watching me cautiously. “No need to seem so scared of me. How are we getting anywhere since you know the van blew up?” I said back to him. “They said they have a plan.” He beckoned me to come back so I followed. We walked in utter silence until we came back to where Thomas and Jacob were standing. A couple yards away was a helicopter. I avoided eye contact and walked over to Clara. I helped her to the helicopter and got on myself and waited for the rest to come on. We put on headphones and flew away.

I felt as if Adam was on their side, he should be freaking more, like I did. I picked up one of my healing books and continued reading it. Yea they can get everyone’s stuff out but they can’t help get people out of the van. Adam must have heard me because I heard him think back ‘I’m freaking on the inside but we need to stay strong. If they kill us for a test, then you don’t want to tick them off.’ ‘Easier said then done.’ ‘Well you’re going to have to learn, just make sure you keep practicing so if anymore tests come up we are ready.’ I nodded and tried one of the healing spells on Clara, which I got from my book. This isn’t fair for her, having her power try to kill her then have her trainer try to kill her. This just isn’t her day. Thomas handed me and Adam each a bottle of water. I just realized how parched I was for inhaling all that smoke from the explosion. Adam must have been too because we both gulped it down. My memory of that day got a little fuzzy and I was feeling a little dizzy. I dismissed the feeling though. When we were down Jacob snapped his fingers and we were in Las Vegas. The pilot landed next to a big golden hotel. It was night time and the city was full of light. From where we were I could see three casinos, two bars and lots of miscellaneous buildings to fill the gaps. Each building was lit up in multi colored lights; they shone so bright I had to look away. But of what I did see, it looked fun. We walked inside and Jacob got our rooms, two rooms each with two beds. The hotel was extremely fancy. It had gold walls and it obviously looked like only rich people stayed there. There was a huge red rug that leads you from the entrance to the front desk. The man behind the desk looked snobby and arrogant. This was going to be fun. To the left double doors led to a casino and to the right were stairs and elevators. I walked over and pressed the button for the elevator. Everyone came up behind me once Jacob got the keys. Adam and I took one then we wall gathered into the elevator. Thomas pressed the button to go to floor six. Everyone, the whole time was completely silent. We all got out on our floor and we went to our rooms. Clara, Adam and I got the first room while Thomas and Jacob got the other one. When I walked in I saw the big queen sized bed, with soft blankets and about ten pillows. I picked which bed I wanted, put my stuff on the floor and fell asleep.

I woke up early next morning, it was still dark outside and Clara ended up next to me and Adam on the other bed. I shook Clara awake and sat up. She was dazed but she woke up anyways. “Good morning.” I whispered to her. “Uhhhh morning? What time is it?” She said back yawning. “Actually I don’t know give me a second I’ll check!” I said with a smile. I walked over to my bag and pulled out my phone. “It’s 4:42 am.” I told her. She groaned and laid back down. “Oh, come on what’s the matter?” I said as I jumped onto the bed. “The fact that it’s really early and I’m up.” I shrugged and went over and shook Adam awake. “Hey whatcha doing?” “Trying to sleep.” “Well get up because I need someone to keep watch.” “Keep watch as you do what?” “Just sneak into Thomas and Jacob’s room.” “Why do you want to do that McKenzie?
