Before man
In the beginning, there was no man. The great dinosaurs roamed this earth. We do not know much about them. But us, being humans, curious and always want an answer to everything, want to know how things were during the time when the dinosaurs were the “rulers of our planet”
Rise of man
Then the first human-like beings came to be, our ancestors commonly known as cavemen. Their lives were simple. They only thought of surviving everyday because during that time, we were at the bottom of the food chain. Then we learned to use weapons and discovered fire. If it wasn’t for these things, man would most probably be extinct by now. We slowly rose to the top of the food chain, and with that, our arrogance grew.
We completely forgot that we were once the prey, not the predator. One of the personality of every human living now, whether they accept it or not is that they hate hearing anything negative about themselves or anyone related to them. But this is the reality our lives. We have become so arrogant that we think of ourselves as “special beings” created by God to take care of his creations. We’ll go there later.
I want to continue the sequence of my story. Once they got to take down powerful animals such as the mammoth, they started to think that they are the new “rulers of the planet”. We are highly intelligent compared to other animals in this planet. Unfortunately, we forgot that we are all just beings of this planet.
Religion
Religion started to form because humans hunger for knowledge and was driven to find out the purpose of their existence. Religion offered answers to all the people craving for answers when in fact most of them are only based on what they believed in or what they have seen only in their surroundings. We started to become selfish. We started to believe that we are the center of the universe.
Also, we believed that since earth is our planet that we decided to believe that the earth is at the center of the universe. And that everything else revolved around us. We started to believe that what we believe in was the only thing that is good, right, and true; when in fact, only we ourselves declared it so. The only time that the reign of religion will end is when aliens far more advance than us is discovered.
Politics
On the quest of man to gain power, we “invented” language, currency, politics, etc. Man has a way of making a good thing turn bad. Politics is everywhere. We cannot live, let alone breathe without this. Social hierarchy is common in nature. But the formal politics actually just assures the person in power that he’s in control for the duration of his term. And in the process, some (if not all) politicians used it to their advantage.
They held on to power so they and their family will benefit mostly from it. They forgot that their family is the people surrounding them. Much like in nature. The leader has to think of his constituents. But with the way politics work these days, they only care for themselves. Forgetting that we are all a big family.
Science and Technology
Science has always been trying to answer things rationally and will not accept anything without concrete evidence. But with our thirst for knowledge, it’s causing us to forget our roots. I’m not saying that we go back to the life of our cavemen ancestors. I’m just saying not to forget our roots. With the advancement of science, we just might be able to come in contact with aliens (if there really are aliens).
Unfortunately, it might be science and technology that will bring doom to our world because of how humans misuse the power bestowed upon them to conquer lands and become the “ultimate ruler of earth”. But such greed for power can only bring misfortune to self and others.
Norms of society
Norms are standard or models regarded as typical. But how can you really say that something is really typical from the start? It was typical before for people to eat people (cannibals), then they decided to change it and casted them as “unlawful” and “immoral”. I am thankful that cannibals are scarce (or nonexistent) because we won’t have to worry about our neighbour eating us in the middle of the night.
But we have to realize that we are all different and that we shouldn’t force our beliefs to others. Discrimation, hate crimes, double standards etc. They are all rooted here. Open mind, understanding and acceptance should rule this world we live in.
Conclusion
In conclusion, humans are greedy and arrogant in nature. But we are not all that bad. We are just twisted with all the factors mentioned above and probably some more that I have forgotten to tackle. I really hope we could start making a change in our world by reflecting on our own actions first. Those who read this and readily say that they do reflect on their own actions without really thinking long and hard are already choosing to close their minds.
