The Flower Lady

The flower lady

She is a flower lady, a forgotten child of the evening.

Even if she was known once by a name,

no-one remembers that now, nobody cares.

On the corner of Hope and Inspiration, she sells flowers.

Tulips, daffodils, roses...whatever is available to her.

People pass by, un-noticing.

She is invisible to most.

So many such ones are...unseen, invisible.

Her name is Naomi, but do you really care to know this.

The dirt under her ragged fingernails are real.

The dusty shoes are from a bygone fashion.

The soiled dress she is wearing was bought from a thrift shop years ago.

She, herself, is thread bare,

but her heart is pure;

pure as a lock of angel’s hair.

A young girl stops to buy a single rose.

She says it is for a dead friend.

“Life was tough...and my friend merely gave up."

Naomi nods and sighs.

“A razor was his closest friend," she tells the worn-out old flower lady.

Naomi extends the flower and sheds a tear.

She knows very well what it is like to lose a close friend and a lover.

The rose is given free...

The thanks from the young girl overwhelms her.

The girl moves on out of sight.

Naomi stays.
