I felt the blood rush to my face, sweaty palms, and heavy breathing. Right now, I was at a gathering at school. And, why, you may ask was I acting like this? Well, I was asking this to my body, too. I was staring at Nick. Nick, one of the most popular guys at my school. And I just so happened to have a major crush on him. But, the surprising thing was that no one knew about my one-sided love. At least, I was just saying to myself it was a one-sided love because if I thought he liked me but it turned out he didn’t, I would just cry myself to sleep every day. To be honest, I think he does like me, a little bit at least. Not even my best friend, Annabelle, knew.
My best friend, Annabelle. Everybody said she was the second prettiest girl at our school, the first one being me. Not that I’m bragging. She had long, jet black hair and had a snobby personality. However, that was what got us to be best friends. She didn’t care for anyone except me and Larissa.
I got up from the seat I was sitting at and started walking to Anne, who was at the other side of the room. I thought I felt Nick’s eyes on me, but pushed the thought away, trying not to get my hopes up. As I was walking toward Annabelle, suddenly, Nick walked right in front of me, startling me. I fell back, only to be caught by Joe. Joe was also one of the most popular guys at my school and happened to be Nick’s best friend. I looked up to see Joe looking at me with worried eyes. “Are you okay?” Joe asked me, sounding sincere. “Uh, yeah. Thanks.” I said, flustered. This time, I was sure Nick was staring at me. Joe helped me up and helped me brush off. He smiled at me and I returned one back to him. “Thanks again.” I told him. “No problem” he replied, and I started walking to Annabelle again.
Nick
I was staring at Krystal, one of the most popular girls in school. I had a crush on her, although no one knew. We never talked to each other, not even a short conversation. I knew who she was, but I wasn’t sure if she knew who I was. I was pretty sure that she did know who I was, though, because there aren’t a lot of people in our class. She had long, curly brown hair and was really tall, thought not as tall as me. All the guys at our school had a crush on her. Literally. It was obvious thought, she was the prettiest and the most popular girl at our school.
Suddenly, I saw her get up from where she was sitting. I took a deep breath and stood up. I started walking toward her really fast. I was right in front of her when she saw me and she fell back, only to fall into my best friend. I was staring at what I’ve done. I saw them talking to each other, not able to hear a word they say. Finally, Joe helped her up and they parted. I sighed. I saw Krystal walking toward Annabelle, who happened to be my cousin. Annabelle didn’t know I had a crush on Krystal and I didn’t want her to know. I knew she would tease me all the time if she knew.
Instead, I walked over to Joe, who was still staring at Krystal. Finally, he noticed me.
“Hey, Nick,” he said to me. “Hey, who was that?” I said, playing dumb. “Who, Krystal?” Joe said. I nodded. “She’s just a friend, but-“ he started, only to be interrupted.
A week later, I was eating lunch with Annabelle in the school cafeteria. She had a bag with her.
“Annabelle, what’s that bag for?” I asked her.
“Oh, today I’m sl-“ she started.
“Hey, Annabelle!” I looked up to see Krystal. I smiled secretly to myself.
“Oh, hey Krystal! I’m all packed for the sleepover at your house today,” replied Annabelle.
I decided to put myself into the conversation. “Oh, are you Kry-“ I started to say.
“Uh, Annabelle. I’ve got to go right now. I’m about to be late for my next class. Sorry. I’ll see you later!” Krystal cried, jogging away. And I lost my chance to have my first conversation with her.
Krystal
“Annabelle, over here!” I cried out to Annabelle. She jogged right up to me. “Okay, let’s go!”
We got up to my car and got in. I pulled out of the school when suddenly, Annabelle said, “Hey guess what!” I was curious so I said, “Just tell me, Annabelle.” She smiled and told me. “You know how you came up to me today during lunch?” I nodded. I remembered. That was when she was with Nick and I pretended he wasn’t there. “Well,” she continued. “While you were busy running away to your next class, I took a glimpse at Nick and he was blushing!” I was so surprised that I stopped driving for a second. I couldn’t say anything. “ I was like, oh my gosh. I was about to ask him if he liked you, but unfortunately, the bell rang. Not that it mattered, it’s not like you like him or anything!” she said.
That night, Annabelle and I were sitting on my bed with our phones.
“Hey!” I said. “I have an idea. Let’s prank call! You pick someone first.” I was hoping she would choose Nick.
“Uh, okay,” she said. “Let’s call my cousin, Nick!” So, with my heart filling with joy, we prank called him. I was excited the first couple rings, but I started to get less and less excited as the ringing went on for what felt like eternity. Finally, Annabelle turned my phone off. “Oh, I forgot. He has after school. He’s probably still there.” My heart sank at the speed of light.
“Oh, well, uh let’s do something else, then.” I said, trying not to sound that disappointed.
Ding dong! Ding dong!
“Hey, it must be Larissa!” Larissa was another one of my best friends. Us three were the best of friends. Out of the three of us, Larissa had the best fashion. She was also the school’s biggest flirt. I was known for my looks, Anne for her personality, and Larissa for her flirting. She has shiny brown hair and makeup piled on her face, although I think she looks way better without it.
“Hey, hey, guys!” Larissa said. Larissa was also very.. crazy. She took out her phone and started texting like mad. “Guess who I’m texting!”
I took a guess. “John, Chris, Peter, Daniel, Alex, Mason…” I went on, naming the most popular guys at our school. We only hung out with the most popular guys anyways.
“Nope. It’s Joseph!” Joseph was Joe’s full name.
“Why, what’s he saying?” Annie asked.
“ I’m trying to guess who he likes. Guess what! He likes someone that we hang out with.”
I rolled my eyes. Of course. He was in the most popular guy group and we were in the most popular girl group at our school. It was only normal for a popular guy to like a popular girl. But I remembered our accident in the morning. I was suddenly curious.
“Did he give you any clues” I asked.
“Well, she’s really pretty and has a nice body.” I rolled my eyes again. Boys. “She’s really nice and lots of guys like her. And totally his type.” Like I knew his type. I barely knew the guy.
I thought. It can’t be Tiffany. Tiffany is too short and not that pretty. Joanne did not have a nice body, no offense. Sidney was beginning to get acne. Gross. Lynna had the worst personality and was the worst looking out of us all, which was actually pretty but for our group, the worst looking. Rebecca and Michelle were too girly, which was the one and only thing that I knew was not Joe’s type.
“Forget it. There’s too many people like that..” I said.
“Yeah, that’s what I said. But he said she’s special.” Larissa replied.
“Whatever.” I said. “Let’s just sleep.”
Nick
I woke up in a good mood. I dreamed about Krystal and me having a date in the… Then I remembered the time. 7:00! I was late!
I rushed to the bus stop just as it was leaving.
Today was a field trip day. “Everyone get in the bus!” The teachers were trying to quiet everyone down but it was useless. I was next to Joe and Mason when I finally spotted Krystal. She was with Larissa, of course. She was about to board the bus so I started walking toward her, determined to sit next to her when I felt a hand on my shoulder.
“Nick?” I turned around. It was Ms. Chung, my homeroom teacher. “Yes, Ms. Chung?” I replied.
“Can you do me a huge favor? Can you run into our homeroom class and grab my bag?” I was always the one that teachers called to get their stuff, just because I was the football team’s captain. I did football for just two reasons. One, I was really athletic, no joke. And second, Krystal was the cheerleader’s captain.
I ran into school, grabbed the bag, and ran back out with all hope fading of sitting next to Krystal on the bus ride there. The ride takes about 3 hours and that was plenty of time to get to know Krystal. I shoved the bag at Ms. Chung and ran into the bus that Krystal had went into earlier.
I ran in, trying
