"Fiona, are you ready for school?" Mrs. Johnson called from the kitchen table. She held Lily in one hand and struggled to put two slices of toast on a plate in the other. Mr. Johnson tried to gulp down his coffee and eat his toast with jelly.
"Honey, could you please hold Lily for a moment?" Mrs. Johnson pleaded.
"I'm sorry Abbigail, I'm already late for work." Mr. Johnson replied, drinking his last mouthful of coffee. Then Fiona wandered into the kitchen, struggling to put her over-sized back pack on. Her hair was in pig tails and she wore a pretty dress with a pink bow.
"Eat your breakfast," Abbigail ordered. Fiona ran up to the chair and sat properly, then took a bite of her buttered toast.
"Off to work," Mr. Johnson got up and grabbed his jacket. He passed Fiona and gazed at Mrs. Johnson.
"Bye honey," Mr. Johnson kissed Abbigail and then gazed down at Lily.
"You have a good day too, sweetest," He cooed. Lily gave a big smile. Fiona watched sadly, then looked down at her plate.
"Bye Steven," Abbigail stated. Mr. Johnson put on his coat and walked out of the door. Fiona bit into her toast and crunched on it thoughtfully. Lily started to cry and Mrs. Johnson got up from the wooden table.
"Keep eating, I have to go and change Lily," Mrs. Johnson walked out the doorway toward the living room and the bedrooms. She paced into Lily's room and lay her on the changing table. Fiona nibbled on her toast quietly. Then she pushed her plate in front of her and hopped down to the ground. Her mother came in with her baby in her arms.
"Do you have your book bag packed?" Mrs. Johnson asked, looking down at Lily.
"Yes, mommy," Fiona answered, putting on her coat and back pack.
"Have a good day in Kindergarten," Abbigail kissed Fiona lightly and resumed looking down at her five-month-old. Fiona opened the screen door, taking one last look at her mother doubtfully. Fiona walked to the end of the driveway and waited for the bus to come.
Later that day, while Lily was fast asleep in her crib, Abbigail was on her computer in her office, web searching. She came across a website for families with children three or younger. It explained if you have other small children in the family, you should keep an eye out on how they behave around the new borns. Mrs.Johnson read carefully and wondered if this applies to her family. Then she heard Lily crying.
When dinner rolled around, Mrs. Johnson made spaghetti with meatballs. Mr. Johnson sat at the table, reading a gold magazine. Fiona sat in her room, trying to concentrate on the dolls in her doll house. But she couldn only think about Lily.
"Dinner time!" Mrs. Johnson called. Fiona got up from the tan carpet and walked out of her room. She entered the dining room, which had olive green wallls with dark wooden flooring. Fiona hopped onto the chair and was about to dig into her twisted spaghetti when Abbigail spoke.
"I wanted to talk to you about something, Fiona."
"Yes mommy?" Fiona asked innocently.
"Look honey, I know having a new baby in the house is a bit tough, but, are you jealous at all?" Mrs. Johnson wondered. Steven dropped his magazine and listened intently, peering at Fiona. Fiona took one glance at Mr. Johnson, then to her mom.
"What does jealous mean?" she asked.
"Jealous means that you like some one else's things or advantages that you don't have." Abbigail explained.
"I don't like it when mommy and daddy pay attention to Lily and not me." Fiona spoke soberly.
"Sweet pea, we love you so much. We love you and Lily." Abbigail smiled reassuringly.
"Mommy and daddy love you very much, you're cute, smart and very funny." Steven added, "there's no need to be jealous of Lily."
"Just be patient, Lily needs to be taken care of, she needs to be fed and put to sleep. You do too, but you're so smart you can do it yourself easily." Mrs. Johnson pointed out. Fiona sighed deeply.
"Ok, I understand now," Fiona said ,"will I still have my mommy and daddy?" she wondered. Abbigail looked at Steven and they both smiled.
"You'll still have your mommy and daddy." Abbigail replied.
