An attack

It was a dark night, the moon and stars were hidden by the dark clouds. Thunder cracked across the sky at regular intervals, apart from it the only source of lighting was from the head lights of a car that whizzed past the lonely roads.

The music from the sound system blared, a mass of copper curls danced in the wind, she nodded, tilted her head enjoying the rock.

“You should have at least chosen a well used roads, this road is so lonely and gives me creeps…” A frail girl raised her voice trying to be heard over the music.

“You always have that… Why would I take a well used road when I couldn’t drive at a max speed limit?” the girl with copper curls retorted.

“It’s half past 12, don’t you think mom would get mad if she knows that we aren’t home…”

“Chill…Mom is probably asleep. If something to happen, I’ll take the blame and I’ll not spoil your good girl image…” She smiled.

The frail looking girl crossed her arms across her chest and sighed. She knew that her sister never yielded to anyone so it was waste to argue with her. She sat wearing a grim expression watching ahead as the car sped past the streets.

She watched lazily as the lightening cracked through the sky. She thought she saw something at the far end of the street, she wasn’t sure what it was or if it was anything at all. She waited until the next lightening; she squinted hard in the same place where she thought she saw something before. She saw a pair of glowing red lights. Must be from a bike, she thought.

“What was that bike you were showing dad yesterday in advertisement?” She asked fixing her eyes still on the unmoving object.

As they got closer to it, Ari wanted to show her Viv, her dream bike. She would be excited, she thought. She might charm her way into getting a ride from the owner. As the car sped closer, she saw the silhouette too big to be a bike, and it was shaped like any motor vehicle. She leaned out of the window, trying to get a better look at the object. It moved, eyes fixed the whole time on her. It rose on its hind legs, and the next thing she knew was they were plugging their ears as the thing howled loudly.

“Viv…Watch out.” Ari shrieked as she let go of the wheel.

The hind part reared up as the something heavy landed on the bonnet of the car. It struck the car on left side, as metal scratching sound irritated their ears. Fear of the unknown paralyzed their bodies. They could imagine a rough shape of an animal, probably a huge black dog. The windshield spattered in all directions and the girls shrieked at the top of their voice.

Ari ducked as a huge a paw groped for them, Viv scrambled into the back seat while the animal reared back furiously, Ari took the opportunity to scramble into the back seat. The sisters hugged each other in fear as the animal thrashed the bonnet after a few futile attempts of finding the girl in the front row. Its paws screeched on the roof of the car, the girls whimpered, Viv shut her eyes as if it was a bad dream and she would wake up safe in her room.

Ari silently prayed to god for help, she promised that she would never let Viv talk her into sneaking out at nights if they live through this night. A sudden gust of wind whizzed past through her left side and she heard a huge thump after a few seconds. After ten long breaths she noticed that the beast left them alone or was lurking in the shadows waiting for them to come out of the car.

“Hey, it’s safe. You can come out.” A deeper tone voiced.

The girls hesitated, taking their time to calm down their wrecked nerves. All this happened in 3minutes but that seemed to be like an eternity.

Ari tried the door after a few minutes of gathering herself, it didn’t budge.

“It won’t open…” She replied meekly.

After a few seconds she heard the door being pulled and the faint light from the street lamp was a welcome gesture to her. She tentatively crawled out of the wrecked car, Viv silently following after her. They stood hand in hand trembling. They collapsed onto the road stupefied.

The guy handed them water bottle and waited patiently as the girls took their time in drinking it. He kept mum knowing that they needed sometime to come out of it.

He stood as heard the distant sounds of wheels on the road. He helped the girls into the back seat. They never said anything; they followed him like in trance. Only thing that mattered for the girls were; that they were saved and heading home.

“24, Lincoln Road…” Viv whispered as she dozed off beside her sister.
