Chapter 1

Chapter 1- Mysterious

POV- Kris Brown

I sat near the edge of the woods watching the girl get about in her chores. What was she doing, I wondered. Then I saw a movement of her hands and realised she was collecting the leaves and grasses into heaps; probably preparing for compost; as if instantly answering my questions.  She was new here and seemed pretty oblivious to her surroundings. She liked peace and isolation, I thought. Nonetheless I have to be cautious. These are my lands she is pondering upon and I am sure she was unaware of that.

Humans are ignorant to the presence of mythological creatures such as vampires, witches, angels and werewolves. Yes, I was a werewolf and that too the Alpha of my pack. When someone new moved to our territory my pack had to be vigilant, alert to detect any danger that may lurk around us.

I sighed.

Looking through my wolf’s eyes, I realised how graceful she was. How can humans be so graceful? I mostly thought they were fragile and easily breakable. They did not possess any special qualities, or so I thought. But, as their lives were so fragile, it was like we had to protect our essence. As a child, I always questioned the need for us to be hiding. Yet, I now knew humans were born with qualities that only allowed them to use a fraction of their abilities.

They were somewhat awe to watch. Unwitting of our world, they stumble our lands and claim as theirs. They build houses, work, fed, raise children and passed on to the next life while we stayed rooted to our packs for centuries. Yet, our worlds may not be so different from theirs; after all they fought for pride, power and status.

‘Sonia’- I heard a woman’s voice call out, shattering my train of thoughts. So, this girl’s name was Sonia. ‘Come have breakfast’ echoed from the house. She-Sonia scoffed and replied ‘Coming Mom’.

Instantly my senses sharpened and I realised there were two heart beats only; one was hers, and the other her Mom’s. So there were only two people in this house, both women. They may not pose much threat, but who knows? Scanning the lawn, I quickly made that they probably shifted here last night, I could see the tire screeches new. Fresh egg and bread toast filled the air immediately making my stomach grumble.

Agh. I haven’t eaten. What was I here for about 2 hours now? I could hear the thoughts of all my pack members and sometimes I had to draw the voices and thoughts out to focus on my own. And this has been what 5 years now since I turned Alpha? My post had been passed down to me at my 18th birthday. My dad had retired for serving as Alpha for about 498 years handing the post to me to continue his legacy. It was customary to do this in our ‘culture’. Along with it came the family business. My dad nonetheless always stayed by my side and helped me along. My mom has always supported me and for that I loved my family a lot. Then there was my little sister, she was 6 years old, and well was a brat. So, you may have guessed I am 23 now, and single. Hell yeah, I am. Quite good looking but gone are my boyish ways of hooking up with girls for nightstands. I now awaited the arrival of my mate, which I was sure, not here; for I would have laid my eyes upon her already.

My attention went back to the lawn and saw her mother helping Sonia get things out of the SUV. Her mother was graceful, too and something about her intrigued me. Sonia must be what 21, so her mom should have been around 40-50. But she looked mid-30s.

Whoa! That was only possible with super naturals. I instinctively inhaled to find her scent but did not. I knew something was amiss. Ushering Sonia inside, her mother glanced a warning look towards me, and I felt my quickening heartbeat. She couldn’t have seen me, it was merely impossible. Or had she?  Was she human? Now I felt the urge to find out more about them.

‘Kris!’ I heard the calling of my name and instantly knew my favourite prey was around. The mountain lion. Now I would hunt.

Immediately I turned and ran off into the sound of my name.
