The best thing about going to school is when the bell rings for summer. The best thing about summer is that you don’t have keep track of the days, like Sundays for instance. School ruins Sundays! But when it’s summer Sundays are a whole lot different.
I’m Haley Harriet Holloway and I’m thirteen (not a surprise) I’m the most mature thirteen year old in the whole entire town! Though Daddy says that I half to get a job for the summer! I know right? Unfair. My parents own this town so I don’t see why they can’t find me a job. What’s the point of working when your parents give you allowance?
Though every one in my class has a job so I guess that’s the only good reason of getting a job. I thought summer is about shopping and getting manicures but apparently my parents disagree with that.
Today is my last day of freedom so I’ve decided to make the best of it! This is my driver Bob. He has brown hair, brown eyes, brown skin, brown eyelashes and brown fingernails. (Though he doesn’t have brown toenails)
As Bob drove me to the Holloway Mall I saw something. Today for some reason Bob wanted to take me on a different rout a rout I’ve never gone before. If I hadn’t seen this I probably would be scolding him right now but I didn’t. Everywhere stood adults and children with ripped cloths and no shoes, they all looked super hot and some were is skinny as a starving mouse! It was nothing I had ever seen before. Then I realized for the first time in my life I saw people who were really unfortunate. I looked in the back seat where Bob had put a cooler filled with water. I crawled in the back seat as Bob stopped the car. I opened the door holding the cooler in my hands “Here” I said they all gasped realizing who I was. Then I spotted Tara. Tara was a girl in my class who never spoke. She only hanged out with the scholarship peoples. Then I realized that people were ignoring them just because they had a scholarship. I also never realized that, I was one of those peoples. I walked over to Tara and handed her water. “ Are you going to tell everyone?” I shook my head. “I’m sorry that I’ve been mean to you all these years just because you had a scholarship.” There was a long pause “I want to help you” I said. There was another long pause. “ Really?” Said Tara. I nodded “Really” Tara smiled. “You want to go shopping?” I asked, “I’ve never been shopping before” I almost gasped but caught myself. “Well then there’s a first time for everything,” I said smiling.
After we got home I already knew what I wanted to do, “Mom, Dad” I said they looked at me. Dad was reading the newspaper and Mom was making dinner. “I know what I want my summer job to be,” I said. “And what would that be?” my mom said starting to listen “I want to volunteer for the homeless, you know help them.” My mom and Dad gasped. “That was not what we had in mind,” said my Dad. Then there was a long pause. “Well I don’t care if I get money or not I want to help them!” I said. Then there was another long pause. “Please!” I cried. “If that’s what you really want.” Said my Dad a little shocked. “Good because I already signed up for the local food bank, I’m working there twelve hours every Sunday,” I said. “Well where proud of you,” said my Mom. I smiled as I gave my Mom and Dad I big hug. And that summer was an unforgettable summer. And I also become best friends with Tara. Who knew that one-day would change me forever!
