It was definitely the sound of Casey's gurgling snores that woke me up. I leaned over bright red bars of the tiny bunk bed and peered right into his drool glazed mouth. Ew. But Casey snoring meant the first day of summer. Its well known in our house, just like you know bread is no good when it has hair on it.
It always comes as a surprise to me when the first day of summer comes around, and the sky looks particularly irritable. Like its its' time of the month or something. Almost makes me not want to go outside.
Well, i suppose you can't control those things, but i can control one thing.
" Casey the house is on fire!" I yelled convincingly.
His body spazzed as he jerked up, smashed his head into the top bunk and flunked back down on his bed. He even rolled onto the floor. I do believe that's the best reaction I've ever gotten, ever.
"What the hell dude?" He grumbled, cupping his eye with both hands.
"False alarm." I said with a smile. He sat up on his bed and i touched his noggin with my pinky. "Looks like its gonna be a shiner. One of the shiniest." I gave him a noogie.
"Brat. That was totally uncalled for."
I rolled my eyes big time.
"Well what else was i suppose to do? You were hoggin' up all the air, and makin a sound storm!" I grabbed the rail and flung myself over the side, flew like a pro landed like a cat.
"Its only seven man!" He groaned, rolling back over on the bed.
"Oh, its good to know we're both on the same page." I said through a stretch, that i could here my bones creaking in. He snorted his response, I yawned mine.
~ Into the Sun ~ "Evil lurks in these in these here parts. Better watch yourself." Kat warned, stepping over the chains that were supposed to make the junkyard impassable. I suppose she was talkin about Charlie, Mr. Newmans dog. He has a whole pack of them (we call them the Rat Pack) but Charlies the only one who does anything.
Back when Casey was cool, he'd come down here with us and show us how to elude Charlie. It was always best when he came with us, he had his own little nickname for Charlie. I know for sure I'd get a solid slapping for repeating it in front of Ma.
But this was now. But this, is now. I'm gonna grow up in a few weeks when i turn thirteen. Then Casey will want to hang out with me again. Can't think about it too much though.
"Brack!Brack!BRACK!" That little dog. "I told ya! Look at his face! Evil!" Kat giggled as we ran away. I laughed too as they chase began through the winding labyrinth we call the junkyard.
She went left and I went right as we tore past the monuments of garbage and steel, nothing but laughter inside of us. We knew where to meet, where we always do. At the foot of Singers trail, maybe if it was still clear out we could go up the mountain trail.
The thought of making it to the trail first was so exciting that I lost myself for a moment, and tripped. Right over a small ledge into a pretty deep ditch, littered with barbed wire. My ankle made a funny sound when I landed.
"Oh jeez." I cried. When I tried to push up, my hand got caught in a barb web. I flipped onto my side and looked at my hand, it was pretty messed up. But it was nothing compared to the bloody swollen mess that was my ankle.
I contemplated yelling for Kat, but i doubted she'd hear me. There were after all, miles and miles of junkyard. And it didn't seem likely that she stopped or was even slowing down any time soon. I sincerely doubted anyone else happened to be around either. Unless it was Mr. Newman or his creepy wife.
Not so sure I was in that much pain.
