Nobody really knows when it all started. You could say it was in 2020, when Congress passed that stupid law. I think it was unconstitutional, so I have no idea how it didn’t get vetoed. But the point is it passed. After that, a president’s term was elongated to ten years.
The president that was elected in 2020 actually served three terms. During his second term, a bunch of President Gary Hamilton’s enemies started dropping dead. Some Americans became suspicious, but nothing was done. Then, in 2050, all the presidential candidates were mysteriously killed.
Congress supposedly had no other choice but to grant Gary Hamilton another term. But he only lived for half that time before Hamilton himself mysteriously died. His son, who became the next president, told the press it was simply old age. No one believed him, except enough of Congress to make a difference. The popular belief was that portion of Congress was bought out.
In 2060, war was declared on South America, and then Europe. By 2075, both continents were completely under the US’s control. Asia was next. It took another fifteen years before the last country flew the white flag.
Joshua Hamilton was murdered in his sleep later that same week. His half-brother—who was younger by twenty years—then claimed the Oval Office as his own.
This next Hamilton, Nicholas, wanted to also rule Africa and Australia, but there simply wasn’t enough soldiers. Too many had been killed in battle. So a draft was issued. Every teenager, boy or girl, over the age of sixteen was ordered to boot camp, which only lasted long enough to train these new recruits to shoot and to not trust anyone with authority.
By 3000, the last two inhabitable continents were still free. The drafting age was lowered to fourteen. This is when this story takes place.
