Halloween Night
By Rose M. Kane
9 Edgar
It was Halloween night and Katy and her friends were all out trick or treating with their younger siblings.
“Urg. This has to have been the 100th house tonight how do these kids have so much energy?” Kathryn (think Catherine) complained.
“I think it is all the sweets they have been sneaking when they think no one is looking.” Lizzy told her.
“Okay kids this is the last house because we teenagers have a party to go to. So let us gather up and let go!” Carrie said with fake enthusiasm. Once they had got the children back to their original houses they headed towards town.
“Guys it is half eight we are going to be late.” Cynthia complained. Cynthia hated to be late.
“We won’t be if we go through the cemetery.” Mary-Jane told them in a shaking voice.
“But it will be so creepy. I mean it is always creepy but it will be even creepier on Halloween night MJ.” Katy told her in a small voice.
“Will it get us to the party on time?” Cynthia demanded. MJ nodded her head.
“Then let’s go.” She grabbed Katy who grabbed MJ who grabbed Carrie who grabbed Kathryn who in turn grabbed Lizzy and all five of them were dragged into the cemetery by Cynthia.
They walked past the different grave stones, scared by the way the owls kept hooting and the way the moonlight seemed to high light certain grave stones. It always highlighted the ones with angles on top
"Dudettes this is like soooo creepy. Why did we have to walk through here again?” Kathryn asked with a shiver.
"Blame Cynie. She is the one who has never heard of the phrase 'fashionably late' and forced us to come this way." Lizzy grumbled. The girls heard a loud crack behind them. The all jumped and huddled together.
"W-w-what was that?” Katy stuttered.
"P-p-probably just a-a-an animal." Cynie said in a small frightened voice.
"Yeah. It had to be." MJ said in an unsure voice.
Come on let's get out of here.” Carrie muttered the five girls looked around.
"Umm guys, what way is out?" Lizzie asked in a scared voice. It was true a thick fog had descended and they couldn't tell where they had came from and where they where meant to be going to. The heard footsteps behind them. Clump clump clump. The five girls started to panic what was that sound? Who was there? How were they going to escape? All of a sudden a girl dressed in Victorian clothes, with black hair pulled back into a bun, blue eyes; an old fashioned lamp that looked about 15 appeared out of the fog.
"Quickly come with me. My name is Matilda and if you don't come with me that man will catch you and kill you. Now come quickly!" She gathered up her skirts and started running through the fog and the girls did the only thing they could think of. They ran after her. After what seemed like a lifetime they finally reached the other side of the graveyard. The girl turned and started to walk away.
"Wait!" Katy shouted the girl stopped and walked back over to them.
"Yes?" she questioned.
"Thank you, but who are you? And how did you know he would kill us?" Cynthia asked.
"My name is Matilda Pennyworth. I was a Victorian maid. On Halloween night at roughly 9 o'clock I was walking through the graveyard when I heard a 'clump clump clump' right behind me. I couldn't get away fast enough. He caught me and killed me. He comes back every Halloween waiting for some poor girl or group of girls to walk through the graveyard so as to catch them and kill them at roughly 9 o'clock. But tonight I was here I heard your cries of terror and felt how scared and lost you were. So I came to save you so as you would not have to suffer my fate. And now I bid you goodnight." And with a smile and a wave she disolved. The girls looked back over the graveyard, the fog had finished and all was calm. There was no sign of the mysterious man or Matilda.
"Did that really happen?" Lizzy asked in amazement.
"I think it did.” Carrie told her shocked.
"Come on girls, let’s go back to my place and watch some chick flicks with lots of sweets, fizzy drinks and ice-cream. I don't feel like going to the party anymore.” Cynthia said and the others agreed they headed home Around the cemetery. What they did not notice was Matilda smiling at them or the mysterious man glaring at them and her, furious at being cheated out of his prey.
The girls never did find out if what happened that night really did happen but one thing is for sure the girl never went through the graveyard again on Halloween night for the rest of their lives. You know, just in case what the heard and saw that night happened again.
