Chapter One

                                                            *Flashback*

Sarah’s P.O.V.

“Hey, give me my notebook back!” I shouted.

“I won’t!” He mocked.

“Huh, okay! What do you want?” I said, twisting a strand of hair behind my ear.

“I want you to sit beside me!” He grinned.

I sighed, “Alright.”

He placed my bag on his seat, grabbed my hand and made me sit there.

“What?” I asked.

He sat on the desk.

“Nothing.” He grinned.

“You’re annoying me,” I rolled my eyes.

“Really?” He mumbled.

I nodded. “I’m sorry.” He muttered with innocence and buried his head between his legs.

I grinned, “Get up, Sameer!”

He looked up at me. “Am I forgiven?” He said.

“Yeah,” I laughed and ruffled his hair.

A second later, our Mathematics teacher entered in our classroom.

“Sarah, can you solve this question?” She said.

“Which one, ma’am?” I stood up.

“The last question,” She replied.

I studied it for a moment and answered, “Oh, yes!”

“Good! Can you solve it on the blackboard?” She smiled.

I nodded & took the mathematics book in my hands.

“Where are you going?” Sameer grabbed my fist.

“Didn’t you hear?” I scoffed and tried to release my fist.

“No. You won’t go anywhere. You won’t go away from me,” He said, as his same, old innocent expression occupied his cute face.

“What?” I blurted and looked back.

Kapil & Abhinav smirked at me.

“Tell him to let me go!” I squeaked.

Sameer tightened his grip.

“What happened, Sarah?” The teacher said.

“Nothing, ma’am.” I shouted.

“Sarah, I’m going to the staff room for a minute. Take care of the class and solve the question on the blackboard.” The teacher said and left the classroom.

I nodded.

“Sameer, please!” I implored.

“No,” He said & smiled.

“Okay, but remember that I would never talk to you in my entire life!” I said and rolled my eyes.

“What?” He blurted and immediately released my fist. Kapil and Abhinav giggled.

I ran to the board and quickly solved the question.

“Is it correct?” The teacher said, entering the classroom.

“Yes, ma’am!” Everyone screamed in unison.

“Very good, Sarah!” The teacher smiled & gave me a chocolate.

“Thank you, ma’am.” I said, taking the chocolate.

“Ma’am?” Sameer shrilled, “Sarah doesn’t eat chocolates!”

“Huh?” The teacher was baffled.

Everyone laughed, including me.

I took the chocolate and returned to my seat.

“You won’t eat it! It will make you sick,” Sameer muttered.

“I know,” I giggled and threw away the chocolate’s wrapper and stuffed the chocolate in Sameer’s mouth.

He smiled back.

Sameer’s P.O.V.

She was sitting beside me. I was so happy.

“Sarah, what will be the answer to this question?” Sneha asked.

Sarah always knew everything.

“65. Wait let me explain you!” Sarah stood up and her body arched above my head.

I don’t know whether she realized it or not, but her loose hair fell over my shoulders. It felt nice.

I grabbed a strand of her hair and rubbed it against my cheek. It was so silky and soft that I felt like if a cube of butter had melted on my cheek.

Soon, the bell rang and the Mathematics period was over.

“Which period is this one?” Sarah questioned.

“Games!” I shouted and ran out of the classroom.

We reached at the playground.

“C’mon, buddy!” Ankit screamed, running towards the football court.

“Yes.” I muttered, staring at Sarah.

She was leaning against the trunk of a tree, which cast a dark shadow over her and made her mellow skin glimmer like Sun.

She was a strange kind of beautiful; with her perfectly-sculpted features and the way nature seemed to surround her. I couldn’t look away.

“Hey, Sameer,” Abhinav said, slapping my cheek softly.

I blinked and looked up at Abhinav. He raised a brow in interest and I blushed.

“Buddy, I could’ve chopped your head and you wouldn’t have noticed!” He smirked.

“Sorry, I was just looking.” I stuttered.

“Stop it, Sameer! What’s going on with you?” Abhinav mumbled.

“I don’t know. But, I feel… I’m in love with her…” I muttered and my mouth went dry.

Abhinav thought for a moment and whispered, “You really…love her?”

“I can’t even describe it, Abhinav. All of a sudden, this girl’s the whole world to me…” I said, staring at Sarah.

“Man, you’re in love.” Abhinav smirked at me.

“Am I?” I mumbled, still staring at her.

“Yes. Come along now!” Abhinav ruffled my hair.

Sarah's P.O.V.

His startling obsidian-black eyes shimmered in sunshine and his brown hair were bouncing as he ran.

He was so adorable, graced with a naturally clear complexion and a bewitching smile.

Really, he seemed to define perfection. And I felt I was in love.

"Ouch," Roohi coughed, "Is Sarah falling for someone?" She laughed, as she noticed me staring at Sameer.

A smile tugged at my lips and a touch of crimson graced my mellow-skinned face.

"Perhaps," I replied, blushing.

I took out a piece of paper and a pen from my pocket and wrote a few lines of poetry.

Sarah's P.O.V

“When you’re in love, it consumes you. It’s all you think about. I mean, even when you aren’t thinking about it, you’re still thinking about it.” I said, wiping my tears.

“Why did you love him?” Disha, my younger sister, said, tangling her hair.

“I don’t know. Love happens for a reason. And that reason is unknown. Love saturates your heart, feeds it something it never knew it needed but now is desperate to be quenched by it.” I muttered.

“Then, what happened between you two?” Disha questioned.

“He fell out of love with me. Maybe.” I faked a smile.

“What does that mean?” She asked.

"“When you’re in love, you’re so happy you found someone. You finally found someone you can see yourself with forever. The thought of it ending feels like knives… But, when you fall out of love, everything just ends." I said with grim, "You wake up one morning and can just sense something is different. It’s a look in his or her eyes, sudden diminished warmth, and a sudden distance. There is a kind of fog between the two of you that wasn’t there before."

“You ignore it. You push it off. You tell yourself this is nothing. It’s all in your head. It’s an echo in your heart. There’s hollowness in everything you do. You are constantly on the edge of tears. The loss is like an echo in your heart, a growing chasm that shows no sign of stopping." I said & closed my eyes. A faded image of his face appeared in front of me.

I continued speaking,"You can feel him fading. He just doesn’t seem interested in you anymore.

You feel so utterly powerless. You feel lost and worthless. It breaks your heart to have to accept there is nothing you can do, and there is nothing you could have done.” I said, as hot tears trailed down my cheeks.

“Oh, I’m sorry. Please stop crying.” She said, holding my arms.

“I don’t want you to suffer this.” I said & swabbed my eyes with a handkerchief.

She nodded.

“Do you still love him?” Disha uttered.

“I don’t know.” I replied.

Sameer's P.O.V.

“Why did she say no to you?” Rohan asked.

“She never loved me. Sarah just wanted to be friends with me.” I said, grimly.

“And then, you fell out of love with her.” Rohan said.

“No one falls in love by choice, it is by chance. And no one falls out of love by chance, it is by choice.” I said.

“I didn’t get you.” Rohan was confused.

“You know what falling out of love feels like?” I mumbled.

“No,” He replied.

“Look, this is what it feels like. It happens slowly & then all at once. The feelings just go away. They just go away. The one you loved just slowly slips away from you bit by bit. The perpetual feeling that stayed for years slowly starts to fade away. And all this is very painful. I fell out of love with her because I knew that there’s nothing else I can do. I knew that she didn’t love me & that’s why I decided to let her go. Falling out of love with her never meant that I had stopped loving her. I had just stopped thinking of having her in my life.” I said and closed my eyes. Her tranquil face flashed in front of me.

“Why did you love her?” Rohan asked.

"I don’t know. But, I still love her." I said.

Rohan nodded.

                                                              *Flashback*

Sarah's P.O.V.

"Sarah, we're best friends, right?" Sameer asked.

"Yes, of course!" I exclaimed.

"Sarah," He grabbed my hand as I was about to go to the class, "Please wait. I need to talk to you."

"Yes, Sameer?" I was a little annoyed.

Sameer seemed nervous, looking around anxiously.

"What is it, Sameer?" I said.

"I love you, Sarah. I really do." He rushed, words tumbling out at once.

I was stunned. I felt my body had gone frozen and numb.

I didn't say a word, but I was overwhelmed and I wanted to scream, "Yes, I love you too."

But, something stopped me from doing so.

I don't know what was it, but it was strong enough to force me to distance myself from Sameer.

"Sameer..." I said, uncomfortably, "You're my best friend, but I don't like you like that."

Sameer seemed to be in pain.

"Why? What's wrong with me?" He reached forward and grabbed my shoulders, "I don't understand, Sarah. Tell me, do you like someone?"

I knew I had to lie. He was the only one I loved, but I wasn't able to tell him that.

"Yes," I cried.

Sameer looked at me like if he had been slapped.

"Really?" He said, as tears filled his eyes.

I nodded, desperately. Not saying a single word, he walked away.

I raced to him, tears streaming down my cheeks.

"Sameer," I cried. He turned slowly.

"Can we still be best friends?" I said, crying.

A tear twinkled in his eyes and he walked away.

He left me alone, tears streaming down my face.

And this was the end. The end of our friendship and the end of our unfinished love.

                                                               *Present*

Sarah's P.O.V.

I thought maybe my mother was right when she told me that this is just a child's crush. But that wasn't true, I was truly in love with Sameer.

I don't know; I don't know why I never accepted my love for him.

I wasn't able to tell Sameer all the feelings I kept inside. After this, I changed my school and we got settled in a different city.

But, today I banished one single doubt of do I still love Sameer or not?

For me, being Sameer's friend was my choice, but falling in love with him was beyond my control. And, I still love him.

Sameer's P.O.V.

I went out and gazed at the sky from the window. The full moon on the sky was a wonderful treat to enjoy. I didn't know how long I stood there gazing at the moon on the sky.

I stood looking at the vehicles on the road. The cars, buses, and other vehicles had a coat of dust on them.

I spotted a cute, little girl licking her ice-cream. The little girl was strangely beautiful and had mellow skin, which reminded me of Sarah.

I love Sarah. I know, that the reason behind our unrequited love was Fear.

Sarah was afraid to love me. Why? I don't know.

I felt at the top of the world, when she used to be with me. I loved and love her so much.

And, I may stop loving her, but I will never stop loving the days I loved her.
