I looked down at the letter in my hand, wanting -no- wishing it was not real. I read the words again. Thinking I missed something. I had left my small town in Chapel, Texas behind without a word, changed my number, email, and facebook. Hoping no one found me. At the age of 20, in law school to be a detective, I was at home, visiting from my college in NYC. But long story short, the boy I secretly loved, broke my heart, causing me to run with my tail tucked between my legs. But someone, just somehow, someone found me. Not just anyone, but my best friend, who knew about Chase, and the heart break. Leah was the kind of girl who never did anything half assed, and it showed, since she did find me. I was sitting in the middle of the NYC Precinct, about to cry. I read the letter again, hoping the words where not true and this was a sick joke or a nightmare.
Bryn,
Big Deluca is on his last leg, you need to come home. Your brother, Jackson, got arrested, your mom is tired all the time from taking care of your father, and your other brother and sister are slipping in school. Please, I know it might be hard for you, but come home.
I know you do not want to hear this but, well, Chase is engaged to Lily, and your mother is planning a party for them. And...she wants you home. Please just do it for Big Deluca´s sake. We need you.
Love,
Leah
Fuck, this is not good. Just when I am getting settled in NYC. Why Lily? We all know she will cheat. Shoot, think of something else, do not cry-
"Hey Sgrt. You okay?" Bryn's right hand man, Cory, so to speak, asked from behind me. Shit I thought I was all alone and everyone had gone to the break room to have a beer at the end of the day to celebrate catching a killer, guess not. I turned and put on a fake smile, and from Cory's expression, he knew it was fake. Yeah, I knew Cory had a crush on me, so the protective instinct of his did not surprise me. He reached out and took the paper, before I had a chance to react he read it. Out loud, and people came into see what was going on. Shit.
"Who is the Chase guy?" Cory glared at the paper, I swear if looks could set something on fire, the paper would be ashes right now.
I snatched the paper, cursing like a Sailor, and headed towards Captain Leer office. Yes Captain's last name is leer, get over it. I knocked on the door and Capt. called out a 'come in'. Without looking up he spoke.
"DeLuca, congrats on catching the killer." He finally looked up and he smiled, until he looked at my face. I must be frowning, shit, clear face.
"Uh, Capt. I have a request to make. I need to go see my family in Texas, and I wanted to see if you could let me use my vacation days." I stared at the wall beside his head, not wanting to meet his face. I was used to the comments about me being a country girl. Yep, I wore my flannel shirts and tight worn jeans and shitkickers, but the accent was what really laughed over. Damn city people, but here I am, a cop in a large ass city who has pry never even touched a real live cow. The irony. At least Capt never said much, since he grew up in a farm in wyoming.
Show time. I thought as I went to my desk to grab my messenger bag and leave for the day. Tommorow I see the family. Just fucking great. Maybe they will not be still be pissed at me...Yeah right.
Chapter 2 The HunterThe hunter stood over his latest victim and wiped the blood from his favorite knife. The women under him, a fashion blogger and super bitch was finally dead. Damn she was anoying. She was not like his other victims, but she was just in his way. He just up and walked in her kichen and using the knife handle he opened the fridge door. That bitch put up a fight and he was hungry now. The hunter found a beer and opened it and drank the whole think in under four big gulps. Wiping the beer from his mouth, the hunter laughed. Them he pulled out the note he had typed and wiped off the prints before stuffing the paper in the bitch´s mouth. Take that DeLuca he thought as he left the house. Damn the light was bright but no one would notice him. Time to head to Wyoming, now. But first, the hunter thought, I should stop by Deluca´s home and leave a present. Then changed directions and headed towards Deluca´s little house. Palming the knife in his pocket he first stopped by the library to type out a note for the Cop.
At Deluca´s home, the hunter cursed under his breath. She was home, and making dinner. Oh well, guess it is time to be sneaky. Instead of picking the front door locks, he went around back and wedged his knife under the window and opened it quietly. The hunter had been there enough to know which window made a noise and which stair moaned. He slid in quietly and snuck off the DeLuca´s bedroom. And placed the note on her dresser. Wait what do we have here? He looked at the bed, on the top of the sheets was some underwear and a bunch of clothes. Going somewhere? The hunter chuckled but frozed when he heard DeLuca´s boots on the hardwood. Fuck! What to do? The window...
Chapter 3 Windows DownI cursed under my breath when the glass in my hand slipped, hitting the hardwood with a loud clash, the glass spraying the ground around it, and my feet. The tiny shards of glass went deep into my barefeet, and with each little piece, I cursed.
