grandfather
Grandfather sits in his old rocking chair. And swings back and for. "What is left if there is nothing?" grandfather says "I don't know grandfather, what is left?" I sit on the rug hoping for just the smallest amount of knowledge. “I don't know. I was asking you." he doesn’t laugh like it's a joke he just sits there while the glow of the fireplace reaches his face. I ask my self over and over "what is left if there is nothing?" just like when I was a little boy hoping for my grandfather to answer the hopeless question. I promised my self that I would find the hopeless answer to give to my answerless grander father who died a few days before he asked me the question. The question was a dream but the dream felt so real that it couldn't have been a dream. I remember his worm voice, the cracking sounds of the rocking chair that his father's father made, and the warmth of the fire so it couldn't have been a dream......maybe just a far off memory. All I knew was that some thing inside my heart wanted me to find the answer to his hopeless question, some thing deep inside. I thought about for days until one day at the age 14 my house was burned down while my family was celebrating my sister’s birthday. Fire men were surrounding the whole place. Then I realized. When there is nothing left including memories the only thing left is heartache.
