Farina was a cute little fairy. She loved flying through the forest and helping people by fulfilling their wishes.
She was different from other fairies because she was allergic to hay and always had to sneeze loudly three times. Besides that she was a bit scatty and couldn`t remember where she had put things. Sometimes she was looking for her hat for hours or she couldn`t remember where she had put her golden shoes.
But she was very nice and everybody loved her. She was friendly to every little creature and loved the quacking of the frogs which was music to her ears.
She gave food to the birds and caressed the rabbits. She loved the deer and was happy about the dragonflies. She knew that every animal had a special place in nature and that every animal was important no matter how big it was.
Whenever somebody had done something very nice, Farina was the first one to satisfy three wishes. Then she waggled her wand back and forth and thousands of little stars appeared. People were happy and smiled at Farina.
But one day something terrible had happened. Farina had lost her magic wand and without it she was not able to help people anymore and to fulfill wishes. She was totally devastated and cried.
“Where is my wand? I can`t remember when I had used it the last time! Without it I`m lost and the Fairy Queen will fire me!”
An owl saw her crying.
“Farina, don`t be sad. Tears won`t help you. You need all your strength to look for the wand!”
Farina glanced at the owl.
“You are right. I have to pull myself together and look for it!”
She wiped away her tears and tried to remember when she had had the wand for the last time. But it was impossible! There were so many possibilities where it could be. It could have fallen into the river. She could have lost it in the dark cave. Did she lose the wand while flying around? Everything was possible.
Suddenly the Fairy Queen appeared.
“Farina, a little girl rescued a rabbit. Fly to the girl and satisfy three wishes!”
Farina got frightened. Now there was no time anymore to look for the magic wand. Her knees were shaking and she was afraid of telling the Fairy Queen about her tragic loss.
“Here, this is the address of the little girl. Her name is Susanna, she lives on Mountain Avenue. Farina, you are the best. You are the fastest and you are always there for me when I need you. After this task you will be my new assistant!” the Fairy Queen said. Then she flew away.
Farina started crying again. It had always been her dream to become the assistant of the Fairy Queen. Now she was lost.
Suddenly Farina noticed another fairy. It was Fabienne. She was not very nice and she didn`t like Farina too much. She was always jealous of her.
“Hi Farina, how are you? Did you get a new task as well?” Fabienne asked.
“I`m fine. I`m on my way to Susanna and I will satisfy three wishes!” Farina answered. Fabienne smiled. but it was a malicious smile and Farina thought that Fabienne might know something about Farina`s troubles.
“Listen, Farina. I will tell you a secret. Do you want to know what the Fairy Queen had told me? I will be the new assistant!” Fabienne went on.
Farina was shocked. Did the Fairy Queen really say that? She couldn`t believe it. Now she had to be twice as fast. But was that possible? Without her wand she didn`t have a chance to become the assistant of the Fairy Queen. Everything was lost. All her dreams were destroyed.
Farina decided to fly to the little girl. She had to fly over deep valleys and high mountains. She was very fast and she had a lot of power. But she had to think about her wand all the time so she wasn`t able to enjoy the journey.
“Fabienne will become the assistant of the Fairy Queen. I can`t satisfy wishes anymore!” she thought sadly.
A little bit later she arrived at Susanna`s beautiful house in Mountain Avenue and sat in a tree in front of Susanna`s window. The window was wide open because the night was very hot. Next to Susanna there was a little teddy bear who stared at Farina with his big brown eyes.
If only she had her wand! She would wake Susanna up and tell her about the wishes. But now it didn`t make any sense. It would be stupid to wake her up and say:“ Dear Susanna, you have got three wishes but I can`t fulfill them because I am scatterbrained and have lost my wand!”
Farina sat on the bed, lost in her thoughts. Suddenly there was the smell of fresh hay coming through the open window. She had to sneeze three times. It was awful, she just couldn`t stop. Susanna woke up immediately and opened her eyes. She noticed Farina at once.
“Oh, a fairy is visiting me! A real fairy!” she cheered. Farina was staring at Susanna in shock.
“I`m so sorry for waking you up. I didn`t mean to do it. My name is Farina, I`m a real fairy, I was supposed to satisfy three wishes because you rescued a rabbit. But unfortunately I can`t do that because I lost my magic wand!”
Farina had to start crying immediately.
“Don`t be sad, little fairy!” Susanna said softly. “I don`t have any wishes. My only wish was to see a fairy!”
Farina looked at her in surprise.
“That was your only wish?”
Susanna nodded.
“May I touch you?” Susanna asked. Farina nodded. Susanna touched Farina slighlty on the shoulder and was happy about her glittering finger. Farina was happy about the joy Susanna felt. And she had done that without using her wand! That was a miracle!
Then she had to think about the last fairy assembly in the forest. She remembered that Fabienne had touched her shoulder. Why did she do that? And then she had to think about her rucksack. It was so much lighter after Fabienne had touched her. Was it possible that ...? Farina was excited.
“Dear Susanna, I have to hurry but I promise I will be back! Somebody has stolen my wand and I have to get it back!”
Susanna waved at the fairy and fell asleep happily.
Now Farina knew everything. Farina knew that Fabienne had stolen her wand but she didn`t know how to proof that. She had to fly back to the owl and ask her for advice.
The owl was sitting on a tree. Farina landed next to her and told her the whole story. The owl listened carefully.
“If you don`t have proof it is difficult to convince the Fairy Queen of the story. It is possible that Fabienne had thrown away the wand a long time ago. Then you won`t find it anywhere. If I were you I would tell the Fairy Queen about Susanna and that you had satisfied her biggest wish. You have done your job. You will become assistant of the Fairy Queen. And now hurry, you have to be the fastest!”
Farina left and said Thank you! to the owl. That was really some good advice.
Meanwhile Fabienne was about to complete her task as well. She had to satisfy three wishes because a man had rescued a little dog.
Fabienne flew through the night. She was happy. Now she even had two wands and it was easy to fulfill wishes. She would be very fast. Scatty Farina was too careless. She had left open her rucksack and Fabienne had stolen her wand. She wanted to be the new assistant with all of her heart but she knew that Farina was always a little bit faster than she was. But without her wand she would be the slowest and she couldn`t satisfy wishes anymore.
Fabienne knew for sure that she would be the better assistant and that`s why she didn`t have a troubled conscience.
She arrived at the address the Fairy Queen had given her. It was a beautiful little house on Elm Street. Mr Wonder and his dog Fluffy lived in that house. Mr Wonder had rescued his dog last week. The dog had jumped into a river to fetch a stick and then he had drifted off immediately. Mr Wonder had jumped into the water without thinking and rescued Fluffy.
Fabienne looked through the window and she saw that Mr Wonder was sitting in front of the TV watching a soccer game. Fluffy was sleeping in an armchair. She didn`t want to wait until Mr Wonder had gone to bed because she was in a hurry. She flew right into the living room and unplugged the TV. Mr Wonder jumped up. What had happened? The game had just been so interesting!
Fabienne stood in front of the TV and said: “Mr Wonder, you have rescued your dog Fluffy last week. That was very good. Now I can satisfy three wishes!”
Mr Wonder was shocked. Was this all a dream? Fairies didn`t exist, did they ? He had never believed in them even when he was a little boy. Fairies were for little girls. But he was an engineer. He built bridges. But he had to smile.
“I want a Ferrari!” he said and had to laugh about himself because this wish had come so easily. Fabienne took out two wands and waggled them through the air. But what was that? They didn`t work properly. They had a bad influence on each other and finally started to burn. Fabienne and Mr Wonder had watched everything. They were both shocked.
“What about my Ferrari?” Mr Wonder finally asked. He was disappointed.
“I`m so sorry. Something went terribly wrong!” Fabienne stammered helplessly.
“Why did you have two wands?” Mr Wonder wanted to know.
“I borrowed one of them because I thought that I could satisfy wishes faster!” Fabienne lied.
“That was a mistake!” he said. “Can I watch TV again?”
Fabienne nodded and looked at the ashes of the wands. She still couldn`t believe the whole thing.
Mr Wonder put the plug back in and switched on the TV. Fluffy woke up and jumped on his lab.
“Fluffy, I had the strangest dream!” Mr Wonder said. Fluffy nodded silently.
Fabienne flew away. She had made a big mistake. Now she started to realize what she had done. She had lied to everybody and she had stolen something. Everything was lost forever.
Very soon Farina was promoted to Fairy Queen assistant. She got a special wand as a present and everybody cheered. Then a small person came on stage. It was Fabienne.
“Dear fairies. I have done terrible things. I have stolen a wand and I have lied. You can punish me now if you want!”
The fairies and the Fairy Queen were horror-stricken.
“The good thing is that you are regretting your bad deeds. You will help all the fairies to find lost things and assist them when they need help with something. After that you can be one of my fairies again!”
Soon summer was over and the fairies were busy to get ready for the cold month of the year.
Farina often needed assistance and Fabienne was a great help for her.
After a few weeks Fabienne asked: “Are you still mad at me for stealing your wand?” But Farina couldn`t be mad for a long time. She smiled at Fabienne and knew that she had changed. She was more reliable and she was honest.
“No, I`m not mad anymore!” Farina answered. Then they hugged each other. At this moment something fell dwon from the sky. There were the two burnt wands. They were working again and as good as new. They were ready to fulfill a wish.
