Snow Sato: trouble in the land
Chapter 1

It was late afternoon December 31, in the Snow Sato (S.S.). Taizen Yaiba and
Yuki Mitsukai was outside building a snowman. Taizen was around 8 years old and Yuki was around 7.
ā€œTake this!ā€ Yuki shouted throwing a snow ball at Taizen.
ā€œWatch it; Yuki that hurt!ā€ Taizen yelled still rolling up the head of the snow man.
ā€œHaha, youā€™re so naĆÆve!ā€ Yuki laughed. She dodged the snow ball Taizen threw at her then threw another one hitting Taizen in the face.
ā€œYouā€™re aim is too good! I donā€™t like it!ā€ Taizen said wiping the snow out of his hair. He threw a snow ball up then sent a small bit of magic and made it burst.
ā€œNow thatā€™s just mean, show off!ā€ Yuki said making another snow ball.
This time Taizen dodged it then threw one a Yuki. ā€œWoo hoo, bullā€™s eye!ā€ Taizen said when the snowball hit Yuki.
ā€œHey, that one hurt!ā€ Yuki exclaimed blushing a bit.
ā€œHaha, now you know what it feels like!ā€ Taizen said laughing. He fell on the ground laughing trying not to roll over and crush the snow manā€™s head.
ā€œKids, itā€™s time to come in. Yukiā€™s father would be disappointed if I let her get sick,ā€ Kiri said walking out the front door. Her long black hair fell past her waist. Her brown eyes hid the fact that she was 31.
ā€œYes mother, could you make us some hot coco?ā€ Taizen asked sitting up.
ā€œI will,ā€ Kiri said smiling. She went in and started making the hot chocolate. ā€œAmai, come on down, Iā€™m making hot coco,ā€ Kiri said making Amai come down stairs.
Yuki and Taizen came in just in time for the hot coco. ā€œThank you!ā€ they said.
ā€œBig brother, Yuki, when can I go outside and play with you?ā€ Amai asked sitting at the small table. Her green eyes were shimmering with hope. Her silver hair came to her shoulders. The fact that she was 5 was hidden by her intelligence.
ā€œWhenever you want, Iā€™m sorry, but it was colder than usual today soā€¦,ā€ Taizen said taking a sip of hot chocolate.
ā€œSorry Amai, we really would have like for you to play with us. Maybe you can next time?ā€ Yuki suggested. She put her cup on the table then hung her coat on a hook on the wall.
ā€œKids, would you like to play an inside game?ā€ Kiri asked.
ā€œSure!ā€ all three of the kids said at the same time. They went up stairs to pick a game.
Knockā€¦knockā€¦knock!
Kiri went to the door and opened it. ā€œOh, itā€™s you Ganjou, welcome!ā€ Kiri said letting Ganjou in.
ā€œWhy thank you Kiri!ā€ Ganjou said walking in. ā€œWhereā€™s my little girl?ā€ he asked with a gentle smile. His brown hair was up in a tie. His dark brown eyes melted even the coldest ice. His 34 year old smile never faded.
ā€œSheā€™s upstairs with Amai and Taizen. Theyā€™ll be down in a minute,ā€ Kiri replied. She poured Ganjou a cup of tea then poured herself a cup.
ā€œThank you Kiri,ā€ Ganjou said sitting down at the table. ā€œHave you told Taizen and Amai about Ryoku?ā€ he asked taking a sip of his tea.
Kiri stopped what she was doing then looked away. ā€œI havenā€™t built up enough courage,ā€ she admitted.
ā€œYouā€™ll have to tell them sooner or later,ā€ Ganjou said looking at Kiri.
ā€œI knowā€¦I wish you would tell themā€¦but Iā€™m their mother so,ā€ Kiri said looking at Ganjou.
ā€œIā€™ll tell them if you wantā€¦I can wait till tomorrow that way Yuki wonā€™t see Taizen cry,ā€ Ganjou said finishing his tea.
ā€œPlease doā€¦theyā€™re gonna hate me,ā€ Kiri said letting a tear roll down her cheek.
Ganjou stood up and went over to Kiri. He put his cup down and hugged her. Then he whispered in her ear, ā€œI know how it feels.ā€
ā€œThank you, cousin,ā€ Kiri said crying. She hugged him back with her face buried in his chest. ā€œIf something ever happens to meā€¦promise youā€™ll take care of Taizen and Amai?ā€ Kiri asked.
ā€œI will if you promise to do the same for me,ā€ Ganjou said.
ā€œI promise,ā€ she said looking down. ā€œI wish Ryoku was still by my sideā€¦,ā€ Kiri said looking up at Ganjou with tears in her eyes.
ā€œItā€™s the same without Ukiyoā€¦,ā€ Ganjou said thinking of his wife.
ā€œGanjouā€¦so far how many people has Satsubatsu killed?ā€ Kiri asked.
ā€œThatā€™s not for you to know. I canā€™t have you troubled,ā€ Ganjou said sitting down.
ā€œYes, I can see whyā€¦thereā€™s too many that have diedā€¦over 50, am I correct?ā€ Kiri said sitting down.
ā€œI shouldnā€™t have thought about itā€¦the master of spells is right hereā€¦reading my mind,ā€ Ganjou said putting his hand on his forehead.
ā€œTaizen is next in lineā€¦then Amaiā€¦,ā€ Kiri said bragging about her kids.
ā€œAhā€¦,ā€ Ganjou sighed. ā€œThey learned from the best.ā€
ā€œThanks,ā€ Kiri said blushing.
ā€œMother, Taizen wonā€™t quit bragging about his spells! Tell him to stop!ā€ Amai said running down the stairs.
ā€œItā€™s her fault! She kept teasing me!ā€ Taizen said racing after her.
ā€œYou two, quit fighting for just one day!ā€ Yuki said coming down after them.
ā€œOh, speaking of the kidsā€¦,ā€ Kiri said moving out of the way. She looked at them then looked back to Ganjou.
ā€œFather youā€™re back!ā€ Yuki said running over to him. She jumped into his arms and kissed his cheek. ā€œI missed you!ā€
ā€œI missed you too, my little angel!ā€ Ganjou said returning her hug.
How can you see into my eyes like open doors? Leading you down into my core, where I become so numb. Without a soul my spirits sleeping somewhere cold, until you find it there and lead it back home. Kiri thought turning her head. She looked at a sketch of Ryoku then tried not to cry.
Ganjou saw what was going on so he tried to change the subject. Wake me upā€¦I canā€™t wake up. Save meā€¦call my name and save me from the dark. Now that I know what youā€™re without, I canā€™t just leave you. Breathe into me and make me see...the nothing Iā€™ve become.
Kiri almost cried before she ran out the door. ā€œTell them,ā€ she whispered passing Ganjou.
Ganjou watched her run out the door then bowed his head. ā€œOkayā€¦,ā€ he said putting Yuki down.
ā€œTell them what? Whatā€™s wrong Father?ā€ Yuki asked looking to Taizen. She waved for him and Amai to come over then smiled. ā€œIs it a surprise?ā€ Yuki asked with a smile.
ā€œThatā€™s for sureā€¦,ā€ He whispered to himself. Howā€¦how can I tell them? Kiri knew right awayā€¦why didnā€™t-
ā€œGanjouā€¦you canā€™t meanā€¦father isā€¦,ā€ Taizen said stepping back. He held onto Amaiā€™s hand then started to cry. ā€œItā€™s not trueā€¦youā€™re lyingā€¦he canā€™t be!ā€ he yelled.
Amai caught on to what Taizen was saying, then stood in awe.
Tears streaming down his face he held Amaiā€™s hand then ran out the door. Amaiā€¦ cā€™mon ā€¦we canā€™t let this be trueā€¦ Taizen thought stopping to put her on his back.
ā€œFatherā€¦whatā€™s wrong? Why is Taizen cryingā€¦did something happen?ā€ Yuki asked.
ā€œTheyā€™re just like their motherā€¦reading my mind before I could even tell them,ā€ Ganjou said still not looking up.
ā€œFatherā€¦pleaseā€¦just look at meā€¦,ā€ Yuki pleaded.
Ganjou looked up. ā€œRyoku is goneā€¦,ā€ he said.
ā€œWhat do you meanā€¦gone?ā€ she asked stepping back a little.
ā€œYukiā€¦heā€™s dead,ā€ he said standing up. ā€œCā€™monā€¦weā€™ve gotta find them,ā€ he said.
Yuki stood still for a moment. Theyā€¦lost their father? ā€¦I couldnā€™t live without mineā€¦ ā€œHow long ago?ā€ she asked walking beside him.
ā€œTwo days ago,ā€ Ganjou said wrapping his scarf around Yukiā€™s neck.
ā€œI know where they are atā€¦,ā€ Yuki said starting to pick up the pace.
ā€œWhere are they?ā€ Ganjou asked.
ā€œAt the memorial stoneā€¦the L.I.B. (lost in battle) memorial stoneā€¦,ā€ Yuki said when she noticed it was getting darker.
ā€œItā€™sā€¦probably soā€¦,ā€ Ganjou said knowing she was right.
When Taizen and Amai to the memorial stone, they ran over to their mother with tears streaming down their faces.
ā€œMotherā€¦it canā€™t be true!ā€ Taizen said tears rolling down his face. He wrapped his arms around her then pleaded for an answer.
ā€œMotherā€¦was it Sasukatsui?ā€ Amai asked trying to pronounce the name.
ā€œYes Amaiā€¦it was Satsubatsu,ā€ she said with her head hung low.
The rain fell as the three traced their fingers over Ryokuā€™s name, which was imbedded into the stone.
ā€œFatherā€¦youā€™re not forgottenā€¦,ā€ Taizen said wiping tears from his eyes.
ā€œDaddyā€¦we still love youā€¦,ā€ Amai cried as her cheerful green eyes grew dim.
ā€œRyokuā€¦donā€™t leaveā€¦your life shouldnā€™t be over,ā€ Kiri said running her finger over his name. R-y-o-k-uā€¦ she thought. My prince charmingā€¦isnā€™t here to protect meā€¦usā€¦
Taizen looked up at his mother. I never thought Iā€™d see you cryā€¦I thought you were the strongest person is the worldā€¦ Taizen thought watching the tears roll down Kiriā€™s face.
ā€œIā€™m defiantly not the strongest person in the worldā€¦but your fatherā€¦thatā€™s a whole different story,ā€ Kiri said.
ā€œI make a vowā€¦that from this day forthā€¦Iā€™ll try my hardest to be a spell master like Motherā€¦then Iā€™ll beat Sasukatsuiā€™s head into the ground!ā€ Amai said.
ā€œMe tooā€¦,ā€ Taizen said holding her hand.
Kiri pulled out her kunai knife then threw it.
A shadowed figure swiftly dodged it. Its hooded cape concealed it from Kiri. I did it Kiri ā€¦ arenā€™t you ready to kill me?
Kiri flinched. Satsubatsuā€¦Youā€™ll pay! She thought lunging for him.
Satsubatsu waited until the last moment to withdraw his sword, driving it through Kiri. ā€œHave a nice lifeā€¦in the afterlife!ā€ he said ripping his sword from her.
Kiri couldnā€™t even scream she was in so much pain; she instantly fell to her knees.
Satsubatsu bent down beside her. He put his sword up then revealed only an evil smile. ā€œHeā€™s not deadā€¦Sardis has him,ā€ he whispered so softly in her ear that she could barely hear him.
Amai threw a Kunai knife. ā€œGet away from mother, Sasukatsui!ā€ she yelled.
This kid canā€™t even say my nameā€¦more less throw a kunaiā€¦ he thought standing up.
ā€œBut I can, Satsubatsu,ā€ Taizen said from behind him. He put the kunai to Satsubatsuā€™s throat then sliced.
ā€œYouā€™re just like your father,ā€ he said flashing away.
After a moment silence, Taizen and Amai ran to Kiri, tears still streaming down their faces.
ā€œMother, donā€™t leave!ā€ Taizen cried leaning over her.
ā€œTaizenā€¦my babyā€¦boy,ā€ she said ripping the silver cross necklace off her neck. ā€œHere,ā€ she said putting it in his hand.
ā€œMotherā€¦why are you giving me this, youā€™re gonna live!ā€ he lied to himself.
ā€œMy boyā€¦.donā€™t worryā€¦,ā€ she said trying to keep her eyes open. She took her silver ring off and gave it to Amai. ā€œMy preciousā€¦little girlā€¦hold it dearā€¦those wereā€¦from your fatherā€¦,ā€ she said taking both their hands.
ā€œMotherā€¦donā€™t leaveā€¦youā€™re life hasnā€™t been lived to its full yet!ā€ Amai cried desperately.
ā€œDonā€™t cryā€¦Iā€™ll always be with youā€¦hush nowā€¦myā€¦babiesā€¦,ā€ she said taking her last breath.

Chapter 2

6 years later. December 13, 507

Amai yawned as she brushed her waist long hair. She looked in the mirror to see her blue eyes staring right back at her.
She put her scarf around her neck then went to Taizenā€™s door and knocked. ā€œBrother, are you awake yet? Itā€™s time for school.ā€
ā€œIā€™m awakeā€¦just not upā€¦,ā€ he replied with a sleepy tone.
ā€œGet up, Iā€™m gonna help Yuki cook breakfast.ā€
ā€œYeah, yeah, yeahā€¦,ā€ he said sitting up. Itā€™s horrible when my own little sister wakes me upā€¦ He stood up and went over to his closet.
After pulling out a black tank top, a cloak, and a pair of black pants, he closed his door and changed.
He brushed
